Application filed February This invention relates to builders hard ware and more particularly to a door catch.

The primary object of this invention resides in the provision of means whereby swinging doors will be prevented from swinging when opened.

Another object of this invention resides in the provision of a door catch, consisting of an embodiment of coacting elements disposed in the path of a swinging door, so as to engage the same upon coming in contact therewith, and holding it against accidental movement.

A further object of this invention resides in the provision of a door catch which, among other elements, consists of a resiliently disposed element located in the path of a swinging door for depression when engaged thereby.

A. still further object of this invention resides in the provision of a door catch consisting of a base carrying a door engaging element in yielding relation therewith for depression by a swinging door, so as to permit the edge of the door to move into a pocket in the door engaging element.

Aside from the foregoing objects. this invention resides in the provision of a door catch which will not only automatically secure a swinging door in open position, but is of such construction that the same can be readily released from engagement with the door by an individual in standing position.

Vith the above and other objects in view, this invention resides in certain novel features of construction, arrangement and combination of elements to be hereinafter set forth in the specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim and, while the disclosure depicts my present conception of the invention, the right is reserved to resort to such changes in construction as come within the scope of the claim:

In the present embodiment of this invention, the letter A designates a building herein illustrated in the form of a garage and havipg swinging doors indicated by the let ter Disposed in the path of the swinging doors, preferably in the region of their outward swinging limitations, are disposed suitable anchor blocks 5 rigidly secured against displacement.

Secured to each anchor block 5 by suitable fastening elements 6 is a base 7 which pivotally supports a door engaging element 8 through the instrumentality of a pivot 9 passing through ears 10 formed on the free ends of the base and side flanges 11 formed on the door engaging element.

The door engaging element is provided with an upwardly inclined area 12 extending considerably beyond one side of the base, at the upper end of which a pocket 13 is provided for the reception of the edge of a swinging door, said pocket having its rear wall 14 extended sufiiciently above the front wall 15 thereof to form an abutment to prevent a swinging door coming in contact therewith from passing beyond the pocket. In order to prevent the side of the door from jamming against the front edge 16 of the door engaging element, its forward portion is deflected downwardly as at 17 a sufficient distance to lie beneath the plane upon which the contacting edge of the door is to traverse.

Suitably secured at one end to the rear wall 18 of the base is a leaf spring 19 which extends over the pivot 9 of the door engaging element and has its free end 20 disposed against the wall 21 of the door engaging element on the opposite side of the pivot 9. WVith the spring so disposed, the forward end of the door engaging element will be yieldingly disposed in the path of a swinging door and on a predetermined plane, and through the instrumentality of an abutment 22 disposed in the path of the rear end of the door engaging element, said abutment being in this instance the rear wall of the base, the upward movement of the door engaging element 8 will be limited.

WVith this invention fully set forth, it is manifest that a positive catch for swinging doors is provided and, through the simplicity of construction, the cost of manufacture will be reasonable.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:

A door catch of the character set forth, comprising a base having its rear Wall terminating short of its upper edges, a door engaging element having a pocket in its upper surface at the extremity of an inclined area thereof, a pivotal element supporting the door engaging element on the base with its rear end extending over the rear Wall of the base, and a leaf spring secured at one end to the rear Wall of the base With its free end extending over the pivotal element into contact with the under side of the door engaging element.
