TOBACCO CASE.

My invention consists in a tobacco case adapted to be carried in ones pocket and provided with a means for filling the bowl of a tobacco pipe with tobacco in one operation. The tobacco case, according to my invention, is of very simple construction and very easy to operate. The pipe filling device is so arranged that it can be operated from the outside of the case, so that. the latter only requires to be opened, when it has to be refilled with fresh tobacco.

In the drawing in which I have illustrated my invention in the most preferred form, Fig. 1 shows the tobacco case in perspective view when in use; Fig. 2 is a top end view; Fig. 3 shows the inside of the case, a portion of the open door being broken away; Fig. t is a cross section along line 1-4; in Fig. 3 showing the pipe filling device, the enclosing tube being shown in section; Fig. 5 1s :1 view similar to Fig. 2 with the knob of the pipe filling device omitted. The tobacco case 1, which is preferably made of a light metal but may, of course, be made of any desired kind of material, has a door 2 preferably hinged to the case as shown at 2 so that upon the door being swung open, the entire case is open to access and can be quickly filled with'tobacco.

The bottom end of the case 1 is provided with a preferably circular central opening 3, while in the top end of the case is a small round opening expanding into a small arcuate opening 4 shown in Figs. 5 and 6. Through the center of the case extends more than half-way down a closed tube 5 through which passes a movable stem 6 provided at its outwardly projecting end with a prefer: ably knurled knob 7 and encircled by a helical spring 8 abutting with its one end against the lower end of the tube 5 and with its up per end against a cross pin 9 provided on the stem 6. Another pin 10 is fastened in the stem 6 in its outwardly projecting portion just below the knurled button 7.

The tube 5 is held in the case by a bridgepiece 11, which engages a flange 12 formed on the upper end of the tube, and between this flanged end of the tube and the top end of the case is provided a flanged member 13 having a hole 14: in its center. This part 13 is provided to give additional strength to the top end of the case.

At the lower end ofthe stem 6 is provided a circular disk 15 fitting in the circular opening 3 in the bottom end of the caseand being preferably bevelled whereby a cutting edge 16 is formed.

The bottom end of the case is preferably formed with a slight recess 17 to fit the bowl of a tobacco pipe so as to facilitate the positioning of the bowl.

Another way of holding the tube 5 in position is shown in Fig. 6, where the flanged upper end of the tube is engaged by the cap-shaped portion 15 of a bridge-piece 19 fastened to the top end of the case by rivets 20.

The case 1 shown in Fig. 8 is provided along one of its sides with a friction portion 21 for igniting matches.

The operation of the pipe filler is very simple. The bowl of the tobacco pipe is placed in the recess 17. The knurled knob 7 at the upper end of the stem is given a slight turn so as to move the pin 10 into the arcuate opening 4 whereby the stem 6 is released and is pushed part way out of the case by the previously compressed helical spring 8 encircling the stem 6, so that the circular disk 15 which in the normal posi tion of the stem shown in Fig. 3 closes the opening 3 in the bottom end of the casing occupies the position shown in Fig. 1, so that this opening 3 is unobstructed. If now the stem 6 by a pressure on its knurled knob 7 is pushed downwards as illustrated in Fig. 1, the circular disk 15 at the lower end of the stem 6 pushes a suflicient amount of tobaccoindicated at 22 in Fig. 3-into the bowl of the tobacco pipe, shown at 23 in Fig. 1, to completely fill the bowl. When the stem has thus been pushed down to its lowermost position, the circular'disk 15 at the lower end of the stem 6 is in the circular opening 3 about flush with the lower edge thereof, and when the stem, by-means of the knurled knob 7, is now given another turn, the cutting edge 16 on the circular disk 15 cuts off the tobacco filled into the bowl of the tobacco pipe from the rest of the tobacco in the case. The filling in the bowl of the tobacco pipe shows a smooth surface, being produced by the turn of the disk 15. Through the turn of the stem 6, the pin 10 at its upper end has been moved out of the arcuate opening 4 back into its former position, in which it is held fast as shown in Fig. 6, so that the stem 6 remains in the original inoperative position shown in Fig. 3, in which position the helical spring 6 is compressed.

When the tobacco in the case *1 is used up, all that is necessary is to open the door 2 of the case and place fresh tobacco in the case which can be done in less than one minute. As the case is preferably made fiat, it can be carried conveniently in the ocket.

Figs. 8 and 9 show a slight modi cation of the case, which here consists of a metal frame 24:, in which are fastened Walls 25 of a flexible material, such as leather, or the like.

I claim as myinvention- A tobacco case adapted to contain loose tobacco and having an opening therein, a movable pusher forming a closure for said opening, an operating stem for said pusher extending through the case, a spring retaining tube within the case surrounding said opening stem, a spring within the tube having one end secured by the tube and the other end operatively connected to the stem, a bridge piece rigidly secured to the case and to the upper endof thespring retaining tube for positioning the tube within the case, and a locking means 'for holding said pusher in inoperative position.
