MECHANICAL ADVERT SING DEVICE.

Application filed September The present invention relates to improvements in advertising devices, and more particularly to a mechanical device w'l'iich may be used in connection with a cigar lighter, or other device which is constantly used by the public.

An object. of the presentinvention is to provide a relatively small and compact casing, which may be. placed upon a counteror the like to support a cigar lighter, or other article and which is provided with means for successively bringing a number of advertisements into display position, so that they will catch the eye of the person using the cigar lighter and may be easily observed.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character with a rotary drum for carrying a number of advertisements to be displayed and mechanical means for rotating the drum at a relatively slow speed, so as to consecutively bring the advertisements into display position.

A further objectof the invention is to provide an improved drive for the drum, which may be disposed within one end of the drum, and which isprovided with a friction drive wheel connected by atrain of gears to a motor or the like in such manner that the train of gears and the friction wheel are utilized for bringing the friction wheel by gravity against-an interior track mounted on the drum, so as to take up wear on the friction wheel and preventinjury to the driving mechanism should the drum for any reason he brought to a stop.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention will be more particularly pointed out in the claims appended hereto.

Referring to the drawing designates a base upon which is mounted a casing 11. The casing 11 may be of any suitable configuration, but is preferably constructed s, 1926. Serial No. 13 m.

with its rear end portion substantially rectangular and with is intermediate portion provided with a forwardly and downwardly curved front wall 12 in which is mounted a transparent pane 13 for closing a sight opening through the wall 12, the pane 1-3 extending lengthwise of the casing and throughout considerable distance thereof;

The forward lower end of the front wall 12 merges into a ledge 14 spaced slightly above the bottom 10, and which is utilized pporting a cigar lighter 15 of any approved type, or any other suitable article, which is adapted to attract attention and be used generally by the public.

i fithin the rear or enlarged part of the casing 11 is disposed a drum 16, which is relatively large and of the curvature or con figuration of the front wall 12, so as to lie closely beneath the sight opening 13. The drum 16 is supported at one end upon a spider 17 which has a hub 18 adapted to freely rotate upon a spindle or shaft 19 supported in brackets 20 disposed in the opposite sides of the casing 11. The open end of the drum 16 is provided with an inner annular track or ring 21 which may be utilized for not only bracing the drum but also for turning the same.

In one side of the. casing ll the open end of the drum 1-6, is a standard or support 22 mounted on the bottom 10 and which has secured thereto a plate 23 by screws or the like asshown, the plate 23 being supported in substantially an edgcw-isc vertical position and projecting into the open end of the drum l6. Mounted upon the inner end of the plate 23 is an electric motor 24 secured by screws 25 or the like to the forward side of the plate. and which has a shaft 26 projecting from the end of the motor toward the open end of the drum 16. The shaft 26 carries a pinion 27, which meshes with a gear wheel 28 mounted on a shaft 29, and the shaft 29 carries a pinion 30 which meshes with a second gear wheel 31. The second gear wheel 31 is mounted on a shaft 32 and meshes with a. pinion 33 on a shaft 3a. The train of gears thus de scribed is mounted in a casing 35, which is pivoted on a motor shaft 26 about the pinion 27 and is free to swing on the motor shaft and extend upwardly therefrom, asshown in Figures 2 and 3. The upper shaft 34: projects laterally from one side of the and beyond i casing 35 and carries a friction disc 36, which registers with and engages against the inner ring or track 21 of the drum 16. The electric motor 24 is provided with a current feed cable '37, which is carried through the open end of the drum 16 and may be carried backwardly and out through the casing 11.

The drum 16 may be provided with flanges or clips 38 at its opposite ends'and which overhang the peripheral portion of the drum for supporting cards 38 or the like on which the advertising matter to be displayed may be placed. o r

In operation, the electric motor 24: is continuously driven at a relatively low speed, and through the train of gears above escribed drives the friction disc 36. The friction disc 36 is held in contact with the track or ring 21 by the weight of the disc 36 and the casing 35 with the gears contained therein. The drum is thus rotated at a relatively'low speed, such as one revolution for each minute,-so that the advertising displays on the periphery of the drum are brought slowly and consecutively beneath the transparent window or pane 13. It will be noted that the cigar lighter 15 is mounted directly in front of the window 13, so that as the cigar lighter is used the window 13 comes in direct line of vision of the person using the cigar lighter and thusthe moving displays attract attention and may be easily read.

It is obvious that various changes and modifications may be made in the details of construction and design of the above specifically described embodiment ofv this invention without departing from the spirit thereof, such changes and modifications being restricted only by the scope of the following claims. v

What is claimed is-:''

1. A mechanical advertising device comprising a casing having a rear enlarged part and a forward low portion adapted to support a cigar lighter or the like in front of the enlarged part, a transparent window mounted in the enlarged part adjacent to the upper end of the cigar lighter, a drum mounted for rotation in the enlarged part of the casing and adapted to carry a number of displays on its periphery, a support in the casing, an electric motor mounted on the support, a gear casing hinged upon the shaft of the motor, a train of gears in'the gear casing, and a friction wheel carried upon the outer end of the casing and connected to said train of gears, the weight of said casing and gears adapted to maintain the friction disc against the inner side of the drum for driving the same.

2. An advertising device comprising a casing, a drum in the casing, means carried by the drum for supporting a number of advertising displays on the periphery of the drum, an electric motor mounted in the casing, a gear casing hinged on the motor shaft, a train of gears in the gear casing, a friction disc connected to the train of gears and disposed upon the outer end of the gear casing, said gear casing and gears adapted to maintain the friction disc against the inner sideof the drum by the weight of the gears and gear casing, and an article of public use mounted on the forward portion of the casing, and atransparent window arranged in the casing in line with said article for observation of the displays on the drum. 7 3. An advertising device comprising a casing having a high rear portion and a low front portion, said front portion adapted to support a cigar lighter, a transparent window in the high portion in line with said cigar lighter, a drum mounted to turn in the casing and having one end open, a support mounted in the casing adjacent the open end of the drum, a plate carried by the support and projecting through the open end of the drum, a motor mounted on the inner end of the plate, a gear case pivoted on the shaft of the motor at one end and extending upwardly and forwardly therefrom,'a train of gears in said gear case and including a shaft projecting laterally from the outer end of the gear case, and a friction wheel mounted on said projecting shaft of the gear case for contact with the interior of the drum by weight of the gear case and train of gears therein.
