"head may be then associated with the the'filing of bushings or the provision of longitudinal axis of the part 11. The end knuckle'ends without r uiring the ,truing or facing of portions of t e spindle body or washers or the like,
It is, therefore, the principal object of the present invention to provide a device capable of being used for fitting a spindle body or head of the knuckle of a front axle, between the knuckle ends of the-axle, so as to obviate the truing', or refacing of portions of the spindle body or head, or the facing of either top 01; bottom of the spindle body or-head newly rebushed, with the further end in view of saving time and labor in carryi'ng out the assemblage of the spindle body or head 7 Vith the foregoing,.other objects of the invention will appear from the embodiment of the invention, which by way of example, is described in the following'specification and illustrated in the accoinpanying'drawiugs; in which:
Figure 1 1s a sectional view through the tool ofthe present invention, parts being shown in elevation and the tool being shown in, use ready for manipulation to spread the knuckle ends of a front axle, such as is in-,
umobile having the usual knuckle ends 28 be cluded in the running gearof an automobile. Figure 2 is an elevation illustratlng the I active condition of the tool, and showing the knuckle ends of the'axle spread to a new relationship. 4
Referring now more particularly to the views of the'drawing, it will be apparent,
that the tool or device of the present invention includes two main parts,-a part 10 and a part 11.
having a' 'hole 15 therein which accommo- 1 x The part 10 is provided with a' dates a pin 16. The pin 16 is removable from the hole 15. The part 10 also includes a recess 17 one wall of which is curved or rounded so as to provide a cam portion 18.
The side wall portions 19 of the 1130853317 carry a pivot pin 20. The part 11 is cylini drical for a portion of its length, and has a fiat portion 21. The flat portion 21 has a hole 22 therein which is larger in diameter than the diameter of the pin 20. The said flat portion 21 is also rounded as at '23 to provide a cam portion at one endof the part 11 adjacent the hole 22. The part 11 at the 7 end opposite to the flat portion is cut to provide faces 24 and 25 which are relatively angularly disposed, the face25 being substantially in a plane at right angles to the of the part' 11 opposite to the flat rtion 21 hasa hole 26 for the reception 0 a pin 27. The pin .27 is removable from the hole 26. The part 10 is in the nature of a fulcrum whereas, the part 11 is in the nature of a in the manner herein above described serves adequately for spreading apart the knuckleends of the front axle of the running gear on an automobile. Itis to be understood that no limitation is necessarily made to such particular use. Referring now to Figure 1 it will be apparent that there has been illus-- trated a portion of a front axle of an autotween which are arrangedthe usual spindle body or head by virtue of the employment of a king or head bolt whose opposite ends extendrespectively in holes 29 in the ends I 28. By arrangingthe free endof the part 11, and the cam portion 14 of'the part.10 respectively in engagement with the inner faces of the knuckle ends 28, with the pins 16 and 27 respectively in the holes 29, the
part 10' then being manipulated by applying a lifting force thereto by virtue of the bar 13, will cause the knuckle ends 28 to spread apart. The knuckle ends 28 may be spread apartto a predetermined degree to accombending action of'the tool.
modatw the: spindle body or head of the knuckle which has been newly rebushed without requiring the same to be faced either at the top or theebottom; It will at once be apparent that by providing the cam portion.- 14 on the part and by providing the angw' l larly disposed faces .24 and on the art 11 thatthe desired rocking movement of th parts may be had and will insure the proper .It will also be apparent that the pins 16 and 27 serve to properly locate the tool with respect to the knuckle ends 28, and prevent the displacev ment of the tool during the expanding or spreading operation. As the part 10 is be-- L mg moved in the spreadin operation, there comes a time when on'esi e of the flat r tion 21 comes into contact with the wal of the recess 1?, which wall 30 acts asa. means for limiting the pivotal movement of the part 10 with respect to the part 11' in one direction. When the flat portionof the part will have been moved to a predetermined andcorrect relationship to accommodate 11 is confronted by the wall 30 the parts 10 and 11 will assume the relationship shown in Figure 2 in which'a maximum spread will have been obtained, and the knuckle ends 28 therebetween the spindle body or head.
claim: L'An expanding tool comprising a ful crum part having an'arm, a thrust part, and
of cooperative work engaging a mamas means connecting said parts together,
portions of said parts coactmg with each other in the movement of one part to obtain a change in the relative angular disposition of said parts.
2; An expanding tool comprising a fulcrum art having an arm, a thrust part,
e means oosely connecting said parts together,
portions of said parts c'oactlng. with each "other in the movement of one part to obtain 'a change in the relative angular disposition of said parts, and means limiting the move,--
ment of one part with respect to the other..
. 3. An expanding tool-comprising a pair diameter of the pin, and a rounded portion a on one part coacting with arounded portion onthe other part.
