17 Claims. (CI. 16-158) This invention relates to a hinge, more particularly to a hinge of the type comprising two hinge members each of which comprises a bail having a sleeve portion defining the hinge axis and two side portions extending transversely of said sleeve portion and adapted to be fixed to one of the two parts to be connected by the hinge.
It is an object of the invention to provide a hinge member of the type described, which can be fixed to said part without nails so as to efiectively resist the working load imposed thereon for a practically unlimited time without becoming slack.
It is another object of the invention to provide a tool for fixing and removing such improved hinge member.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a hinge comprising two hinge members connected by a hinge pin and separable without requiringthe hinge pin to be removed substantially from the hinge.

It is another object of the invention to provide a hinge I of the type described, in which a fixing strip arranged between the side portions of the bail is formed with apertures facilitating the movement of the strip and accessible without requiring apertures in the wooden parts in which the hinge is inserted.
It is a feature of the invention to provide a hinge member comprising a bail having a longitudinally extending sleeve portion defining a hinge axis, and two side port-ions adapted to be received in a groove formed in a part to which said hinge member is to be fixed, at least one of said side portions being formed on its inside with several surface irregularities distributed throughout the length of said hinge member, and a fixing strip interposed between and engaging both said side portions and movable relative thereto in the longitudinal direction of said hinge member, said strip being formed with surface irregularities adapted to register in an initial position of the strip with the surface irregularities in said bail and to spread said side portions apart to cause them to be held in said groove upon a movement of the fixing strip from said initial position in the longitudinal direction of said hinge member.
It is another feature of the invention to provide a hinge comprising two bail-like hinge members each of which comprises a plurality of sleeve portions aligned in alternation with the sleeve portions of the other hinge member to define a hinge axis and two side portions adapted to be fixed to one of the two parts to be connected by the hinge, and a'plurality of hinge pin parts having crowned ends and a length equal to that of said sleeve portions, each of said hinge pin parts being received by two adjacent sleeve portions of saidhinge members.

To facilitate the movement of the fixing strip between the side portions of the hinge member the surface irre uliarities in the bail and/or the fixing strip are preferably formed with lateral surface portions which are inclined relative to the plane of the bail or strip. The surface irregularities may consist of elevations or depressions and it is ofpspecial advantage to provide the out- Figs. 13 and 14 illustrate the displacement of the 'fixi'ng strip by means of an appropriate tool, in two difierent positions.

Figs. 21 and 22 are an elevation and side view,'re-" spectively, of a tool serving to move said fixingfstrip; In the embodiments shown in Figs. 1-14 the hinge com prises two bail members formed by bending a strip, around the hinge axis. Thus each hinge member comprisestwo fiat side portions 1, 1', which are bent around thehinge pin 2. Between the two side portions 1 and 1' a fixing strip 3 is arranged, which is movable in the longitudinal direction of the hinge. The side portions are provided at one end with a lug 4, bent at 90 deg., for limiting-the longitudinalmovement of the fixing strip when it is intro} portions 1 and 1' are provided with a series of boss lik e elevations 5, which, lie on an imaginary straight line side of the side portions with elevations in the form' of 1 parallel to the hinge axis. a t two parts that are to be connected by means of the hinge into the interior of such parts. However, the grooves may alternatively extend at right angles. from one of the limiting surfaces. Thus. a perfectly tight connection of saidtwo parts can be achieved. Moreover, such grooves can be milled easily. W11en the fixingstrip .3 is now moved in the longitudinal direction, the two side portions I and 1' are spread apart and the bosses 5 are forced against the walls of the groove 29 (Fig. 7). Owing to the high static friction. the'grooves 29 can be formed not only in parts of wood, but also in members of stone, metal, etc.; the hinge will remain perfectly in position also in the lastmentioned materials after the fixing strip has been displaced. In the case of soft timber, milled grooves 29 bounded by two parallel walls are sufficient for hinges according to Figs. 6 and 7. In that easev the bosses 5 will. be forced sufrl' ci ently into the wood after the two side portions land 1' have been spread apart. Where hard wood or other substantially hard materials and hinges having bosses on the outside are used, it is suitable to form the material with grooves 30, which maybe shallower than the The fixing strip 3 can be displaced in different ways.
As indicated in Fig. 4, the strip 3 can be driven in between the sideportionsl, 1'. In that case the hinge member remains either permanently in the wood or a similar strip must be driven in from the other end deep enough to move the strip 3 back into its initial position, shown in Fig. 4, to enable the removal of the hinge member which can then be pulled out easily. It is more suitable, however, to provide apertures in the side portions 1 1' and in the fixing strip 3, as is indicated in Fig. 1 on the right. In that embodiment each of side portions 1, 1 has an intermediate aperture 9 and two lateral, longer apertures '10. r The fixing strip 3 is formed with a longer intermediate aperture 11 and two short lateral apertures 12. 'As is shown in Figs. 6, 12 and 13, an oblong aperture 14; through which a tool 15 can be introduced, is formed in the wood 13. 'The tool 15 comprises suitably a fixed jaw. 16 withaprojection 17 to be received in aperture 9 or 11, and a lever 19, which is pivoted at 18 to the fixed jaw 16 and has a cam end 20 engag ing a sliding piece 21, which has also a projection 22 to be received in the lateral apertures and .12.
When according to Fig. 13 the tool is introduced into the intermediate and right-hand apertures of Fig. 1 and the jaw 16 and lever 19 are forced together, the sliding piece 21 will move to the right to take the fixingstrip 3 along in the same direction until the latter has assumed the position shown in vFig. 5. t
. .When the tool is reversed and introduced according to the apertures which are on the left and at the center in Fig. 1 and the jaw 16 and lever 19 are again forced, to-
gether, the slidingnpiece 21 will be moved to the left so Y that finally the fixingstrip 3 will again assume its initial position, shown in Fig. -4 Then the two side portions land 1 are no longers pread apart and the hinge member can easily be pulled out of the groove '29.
It is not necessary, however, toprovide three apertures 9-12 because two of them are sutficient. In that case it is necessary, however, to force thejaw and the lever of the tool apart for'removing the hinge. In any case the fixing strip 3 is formed with an aperture 12 which has two edges 12 and 12" extending transversely of the longitudinal direction of the hinge member, whereas each of the side portions 1, 1 isformed with an aperture It) registering with said aperture 12in the fixing strip and exposing at least one of the edges '12'.and. 12" to enable the same to be engaged for moving ,said strip. I
Where two longitudinally spaced ,sets of registering apertures are provided, .one of said sets may comprise a relatively long aperture 10 in each of the side portions 1, 1 and a relatively short aperture .12 in'the fixingqstrip, whereas the otherofsaid sets'imay comprise a relatively asaaaor 4 long aperture 11 in the fixing strip and a relatively short aperture 9 in each of the side portions 1, 1.
j Whether the two sets of apertures described above are provided or the three sets of apertures shown in the drawing, each of the relatively short apertures 9, 12 has two edges, designated 9'," 9" and 12, 12", extending transversely of the longitudinal direction of the hinge member and the length of the relatively long apertures 10, 11 is at least equal to the spacing of the transverse edges of the relatively short aperture of the same set plus the displacement a of the strip 3 required to move it from its initial position sufficiently to spread the side portions 1, 1 apart.
.The relatively long apertures 10 in the side portions expose at least one of the transverse edges 9', 9" of the fixing strip to enable said edge to be engaged for moving the strip.
The embodiment shown in Figs. 8-11 differs from that shown in the other Figures only by the provision of spikes 230m the outside of the, two limbs 1 and 1. The side portions 1, I. themselves have no elevations but only depressions 24, with which elevations 25 formed in the fixingstrip 3 are in register in the initial position of the strip (see Fig. 10). When the fixing strip 3 is displaced, the elevations 25 are moved out of the depressions 24 to spread the two side portions 1 and 1 apart.
To enable the easy disconnection of the two members of the hinge even after they have been mounted, and to facilitate their manufacture, the hinge pin is suitably made up of a plurality of parts 26 which have crowned ends and are accurately of the same length as the several sleeve portions 27 and 28. In the position for use the adjacent pin parts 26 engage one another at the center'ol: the sleeve portions. length, e. g. by driving in a bolt or the like from the outside, they are located only in their associated sleeve portion and'the two hinge members can be separated Without dilficulty. To reconnect the two hinge members, the bolt is driven in sufficiently to move the several pin parts 26 by half the length of a sleeve portionj I Particularly in the case of long hinge members it may be suitable to form the fixing strip 3 not as a single piece but, as is shown in Fig. 12 in several parts 3, 3" spaced by the distance a through which the several strip parts are to be displaced. In that case the displacement of the several strip parts 3, 3 does not require a force as large as that necessary for moving a strip of the entire length by means of the tool. It is obvious that the apertures such as 9-i2 which are necessary to enable the movement of the strip, must be formed in each of the strip portions .3, 3" and in the adjacent areas of the side portions 1, 1.
The surface irregularities, i. e. the elevations and/or depressions can be formed inany stage of the manufacture of the hinge members. It may be of special advantage to roll them already into the sheet metal from which the hinge members are formed; the same applies to the bending lines 31 and 32 limiting the transition parts between the sleeve portion and the side portions to be spread 1 apart (see Fig. 6), and/or the spikes 2'3 and the apertures for receiving the respective other hinge member. In that case the preformed sheets can be bent around corresponding "hinge pins to form the hinges.
Like the embodiments described hereinbefore, the hinge member shown in Figs. 1-520 comprises a bail having a tubular sleeve portion defining the hinge axis, and two sideportions 41, 41 extending transversely of said sleeve portion '40 and adapted to be received in a groove 29 formed in a part to which said hinge memberis to be fixed. As in the embodiments shown in Figs. l-l l, a fixing strip 43 is provided, which is movable in the longitudinal direction of the hinge member. .The fixing strip 43 is formed on both sides with two rows of surface irregularities, which may be considered elongated bosses .45 and 45 orcorresponding depressions .46 and ,46",f depending on the side'from which the strip is viewed. The
If they are displaced by half their side portions 41 and 41 are'formed with apertures 48 adapted toregister with the outer row of bosses 45. The apertures 45 are formed with-sharp-edged, raised rim portions 47, which will be forced 'into the wood or the like when the two side portions are spread apart. For a purpose which will be set forth hereinafter the rim portions 47 have axially outwardly tapering outer peripheral surfaces. In the region of the inner row of bosses 45' the side portions 41 and 41' are curved to form on their inside a recess 47, extending parallel to the hinge axis and receiving the inner row of bosses 45 for guiding the strip 43, which is thus mainted parallel to the hinge axis.
Each of the strips 43 is formed with an aperture consisting of-a marginal recess 51, which has two edges 51, 51 extending transversely of the longitudinal direction of the hinge member and adapted to be engaged for moving the strip 43. For this purpose a tool is provided, which consists of a plate 55 formed with a projection 52 (Figs. 21 and 22). The sleeve portion 40 of each hinge member is formed'adjacent to the recess51 with'a slit 49, which is long enough to permit of the movement of the tool 55 whose projection 52 has been inserted through the slit 49 into the recess 51, and thus of the movement enable the insertion of the projection 52 of the tool 55 through the slit 49 into the recess 51 the hinge pin means 42 accommodated in the sleeve portions 40 of both hinge members leaves free the lengths in which said sleeve portions are formed with said slits 49. To this end the hinge pin means may comprise two separate parts, each of which is accommodated in the sleeve portions 40 of both hinge members and which are arranged toleave free between them the length in which said sleeve portions are formed with the slits 49 andthe length between the slit 49 in one sleeve portion and the slit 49 of the other sleeve portion. Fig. 20 shows the slit 49 to be covered completely when the hinge is closed. Thus the slit does not disturb the appearance of the hinge. As is apparent from Figs. 17 and 22 the slit 49 is displaced from the fcenter' plane of the hinge member so that the slit is not accessible when the door or the like is closed. Thus an unauthorized disassembly of the hinge is prevented ment of the slit 49 the projection 52of the tool 55 is slightly curved.
To fix the hinge member in position after it has been inserted in the groove 29 the fixing strip 43 is moved from its initial position, in which the bosses 45 are received in the apertures 48, sufiiciently to move the side portions 41, 41' apart. To this end the-projectionSZ is inserted through the slit 49 into the recess 51 of the strip 43, Whereafter the latter is driven to the left by slight blows on the plate 55 until the projection 52 engages the end of the slit 49. Thus the side portions 41and 41' are spread apart and the sharp-edged rim portions 47 penetrate into the wood or the liketo fix the hinge member against lateral and longitudinal displacement.
To remove the hinge member, the projection 52'of the tool 55 is again inserted into the recess 51 and is displaced in the opposite direction until the bosses 45 register with the apertures 48.- Now the hinge member is readily removable, the rim portions 47 sliding out of their anchoring material along their tapered outer peripheral surfaces (Fig. 17). H
The length of the slit 49 in the bail is at least equal to i the spacing of the transverse edges 51', 51" of the marginal recess of the strip 43 plus the displacement a of the strip 43 required to move it from its initial position sufliciently to spread the side portions 41, 41'japart.
Thus the slit 49 will expose in any position of the strip 43 at least one of the transverse edges 51', 51" to'enable said edge to be engaged for moving the strip.

A hinge member for attachment to, one of two parts to be connected by a hinge, comprising a bail having a longitudinally extending sleeve portion defining a hinge axis, and two side portions adapted to be received in a groove formed in said part to which said hinge member is to be attached, both said side portions being formed on their outside with elevations and on their inside with several surface irregularities distributed throughout the length of said hinge member, and a fixing strip interposed between and engaging both said side portions and movable relative thereto in the longitudinal direction of said hinge member, said strip being formed with surface irregularities adapted to register in an initial position of the strip with the surface irregularities in said bail and to spread said side portions apart to cause said elevations to be held in said groove upon a movement of the fixing strip from said initial position in the longitudinal direction of said hinge member.
5. A hinge member as set forth in claim 4, in which said elevations consist of bosses.
6. A hinge member as set forth in claim 4, in which said elevations consist of spikes.

A hinge member for attachment to one of two parts to be connected by a hinge, comprising a bail having a longitudinally extending sleeve portion defining a hinge axis, and two side portions adapted to be received in a groove formed in said part to which said hinge member is to be attached, at least one of said side portions being formed on its inside with several surface irregularities distributed throughout the length of said hinge member, and a fixing strip interposed between and engaging both said side portions and movable'relative thereto in the longitudinal direction of said hinge member, said strip being formed with surface irregularities adapted to reg ister in an initial position of the strip with the surface irregularities in said bail and to spread said side portions apart to cause them to beheld in said groove upon sufii cient movement of the fixing strip from said initialposition in the longitudinal direction of said hinge member, said fixing strip being formed with an aperture which has two edges extending transversely of the longitudinal direction of the hinge member, said bail being formed with an aperture registering with said aperture in the,

A hinge member for attachment to one of two parts to be connected by a hinge, comprising a bail having a longitudinally extending sleeve portion defining a hinge axis, and two side portions adapted to be received in a groove formed in said part to which said hinge member is to be attached, at least one of said side portions being formed-on its inside with several surface irregularities distributed throughout the length of said hinge member, and a fixing strip interposed between and engaging both said side portions and movable relative thereto in the longitudinal direction of said hinge member, said strip being formed with surface irregularities adapted to register in an initial position of the strip with the surface irregularities in said bail and to spread said side portions apart to cause them to be held in said groove upon a movement of the fixing strip from said initial position in the longitudinal direction of said hinge member, said fixing strip and said side portions being formed with two outer sets and an intermediate set of registering apertures, each of said outer sets comprising a relatively short [aperture in said strip and a relatively long aperture in each of said side portions, said intermediate set comprising a relatively long aperture in said strip and a relatively short aperture in each of said side portions, each of said relatively short apertures having two edges extending transversely of the longitudinal direction of the hinge member, the length of the relatively long apertures being at least equal to the spacing of the transversely extending edges of the relatively short aperture of the same set plus the distance of said sufficient movement of the strip, each of said relatively longapertures exposing at least one of said transversely extending edges of the relatively short aperture of the same set to enable one of said transversely extending edges of the strip and one of said transversely extending edges of the side portions to be engaged for moving the strip.

A hinge member for attachment to one of two parts to be connected by a hinge, comprising a bail having a longitudinally extending sleeve portion defining a hinge axis, and two side portions adapted to be received in a groove formed in said part to which said hinge member is to be attached, at least one of said side portions being formed on its inside with several surface irregularities distributed throughout the length of said hinge member, and a plurality of fixing strip parts interposed between and engaging both said side portions and individually movable relative thereto in the longitudinal direction of said hinge member, each of said strip parts being formed with surface irregularities adapted to register in an initial position of the respective fixing strip parts with the surface irregularities in the adjacent portion of said bail and to spread said side portions apart tov cause them to be held in said groove upon a movement of said strip part from said initial position in the longitudinal direction of said hinge member, said fixing strip parts being spaced from each other in the longitudinal direction. of the hinge member by a distance equal to the amount of movement required to move each strip part from its initial: position sulficiently to spread said side portions apart.
1 l."A hinge member for attachment to one of two parts to be connected by: a hinge, comprising a bail hav ing a longitudinally extending sleeve portion defining. a hinge axis, and two side portions adapted to be received assess! irregularities distributed throughout the length of said hinge member, and 'a fixing strip interposed between and engaging both said side portions and movable relative I thereto in the longitudinal direction of said hinge member, said strip being formed with surface irregularities adapted to register in an initial position of the strip with the surface irregularities in said bail and to spread said side portions apart to cause them to be held in said groove upon a movement of the fixing strip from said initial position in the longitudinal direction of said hinge member, said similar surface irregularities being spaced in the longitudinal direction of the hinge member by a distance at least equal to their own length measured in that direction, said fixing strip being formed with an aperture which has two edges extending transversely of the longitudinal direction of the hinge member, said bail being formed with an aperture registering with said aperture in the strip, the length of said aperture in the bail being equal to the spacing of said transversely extending edges plus the length of said similar surface irregularities.

A hinge member for attachment to one of two parts to be connected by a hinge, comprising a bail having a longitudinally extending sleeve portion defining a hinge axis, and two side portions adapted to be received in a grooveformed in said part to which said hinge member is to be attached, at least one of said side portions being formed on'its inside with several surface irregularities distributed throughout the length of said hinge member,
and a fixing strip interposed between and engaging both said side portions and movable relative thereto in the longitudinal direction of said hinge member, said strip being formed with surface irregularities adapted to register in an initial position of the strip with the surface irregularities in said bail and to spread said side portions apart to cause them to be held in said groove upon sufficient movement of the fixing strip from said initial position in the longitudinal direction of said hinge member,
said fixing strip being formed with an aperture consisting of a marginal recess which has two edges extending transversely of the longitudinal direction of the hinge member, said sleeve portion being formed with a slit registering with said marginal recess, the length of said slit being at least equal to the spacing of said transversely extending edges plus the distance of said sufiicient movement of the strip,said split exposing at'least one of, saidtransversely extending edges to enable the same to be engaged for moving the strip.

A hinge for connecting two parts each of which is formed with a groove, said hinge comprising two hinge members each of which comprises a bail having a longitudinally extending sleeve portion defining a hinge axis, and two side portions adapted to be received in the groove of one of said parts, at least one of said side portions being formed on its inside with several surface irregularities distributed throughout the length of said hinge memher, and a fixing strip interposed between and engaging both said side portions and movable relative thereto in the longitudinal direction of said hinge member, said strip being formed with surface irregularities adapted to register in-an initial position of the stripwith the surface irregularities in said bail and to spread said side portions apart to cause them to be held in said groove upon suflicient movement of the fixing strip from said initial position in the longitudinal direction of said hinge member,

14. -A hinge asset forth in claim 13, in which said hinge pin means comprise: two hin e pin parts each of which is accommodated in the sleeve portions ,of both said hinge members and which are arranged to leave free between them the lengths in which said sleeve portions are formed with said-slits and the length between the slit of one of saidsleeve portions and the slit of the other of said sleeve portions.

A hinge member for attachment to one of two parts to be connected by a hinge, comprising a bail having a longitudinally extending sleeve portion defining a hinge axis, and two side portions adapted to be received in a groove formed insaid part to which said hinge member is to beattached, both said side portions being formed with apertures defined by sharp-edged raised rim portions forming elevations on the outside of said side portions and forming on the inside of said side portions several surface irregularities distributed throughout the length of said hinge member, and a fixing strip interposed between and engaging both said side portions and movable relative thereto in the longitudinal direction of said hinge member, said strip being formed with surface irregularities adapted to register in an initial position of the strip with the surface irregularities in said bail and to spread said side portions apart to cause them to be held in said groove upon a movement of the fixing strip from said initial position in the longitudinal direction of said hinge member.
16. A hinge member as set forth in claim 15, in which said rim portions have an axially outwardly tapering peripheral outface.
17. A hinge member for attachment to one of two parts to be connected by a hinge, comprising a bail having a longitudinally extending sleeve portion defining a hinge axis, and two side portions adapted to be received in a groove formed in said part to which said hinge member is to be attached, at least one of said side portions being formed on its inside with several surface irregularities distributed throughout the length of said hinge member, and a'fixing strip interposed between and engaging both said side portions and movable relative thereto in the longitudinal direction of said hinge member, said strip being formed with surface irregularities adapted to register in an initial position of the strip with the surface irregularities in said bail and to spread said side portions apart to cause them to be held in said groove upon a movement of the fixing strip from said initial position in the longitudinal direction of said hinge member, said fixing strip being formed at least on one side with additional surface irregularities consisting of elevations aligned in the longitudinal direction of the strip and at least one of said side portions being formed on its inside with at least one recess extending parallel to the hinge axis and receiving said elevations of the strip for guiding the latter during said movement thereof.
