SOUND-REPRODUGING INSTRUMENT.
Application filed July 7, 1926, Serial No. 120,925, and in Great Britain July 14, 1925.
The object of the present invention is to provide improved means enabling the needle of a sound reproducing instrument to be set back rapidly to any desired point of the record, thereby enabling part of the record to be reproduced as often as may be necessary.
In carrying the invention into effect a vertical bearing is fixed uponthe casing of the sound reproducing instrument near to the axis of the tone arm, and this hearing carries a horizontal arm which rotates in a horizontal plane. This horizontal arm may be set at any desired height with respect to the vertical bearing, and passes over the tone arm making acute angles therewith as seen in plan.
The horizontal arm carries two parts which are so constructed that they may slide, but not rotate, thereon. The first sliding part. that nearer to the vertical rod. is provided with means by which it may be connected to or released from the second sliding part. The first sliding part is also provided with means which, when it is released from the second sliding part. will cause the first sliding part to be fixed on the horizontal arm. When the first sliding part is released from the second sliding part this latter is free upon the horizontal arm. The second sliding part is provided with means whereby itis connected to part of a tone arm and should the tone arm be mounted in its socket with a universal joint so that it can be raised, means are provided to allow the tone arm to be raised without disconnecting it from the second sliding part.
' The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the complete apparatus partly broken away and showius a portion of a tone arm in dotted lines.

As shown in the drawings a is a base plate which is fixed upon the casing of the sound reproducing instrument. The base plate a; carries a vertical bearing 6, within which is mounted a vertical rod a carrying at its upper part a horizontal arm (Z. The horiz'ontal arm (Z may be set at any desired height upon the vertical rod 10 by means of a set screw 6. The horizontal arm 03 is formed on its upper surface with a groove f and it is preferably provided with a scale 9.
Upon the horizontal arm (Z are mounted two sliding parts it, i. The first sliding part it has a set screw and the second part 2' has a set screw is. The lower end of the set screw impinges upon a spring latch Z having vertical plates m and a. The plate m is guided in a slot 0 and the vertical plate a is guided in a slot 7) in opposite ends of the sliding part it.
The latch Z is supported by means of a screw 9 passing freel through an aperture in the body of the sliding part 7L into the latch Z. Surrounding the screw 0 is a coiled spring 1'. the lower end of which bears against oart of the body It and the upper end of which bears beneath the head of the screw (7. The latch Z. when the set screw 7' is in the position shown in Figs. 2, 3 and l. is raised by the spring 1 slightly above the bottom of the groove f in the horizontal arm d.
When the set screw 7' is in the position shown in Fig. 1 it depresses the latch Z and presses it tightly against the bottom at the groove thereby clamping the sliding, part it upon the horizontal arm (Z. The latch Z is located in the groove 7" and acts as a feather to prevent the first sliding parth rotating on the horizontal arm d.
The second sliding part 11 carries a fixed hook s which is adapted to engage with the latch Z when the set screw j is screwed upwards. When the set screw 7' is screwed downwards into the position shown in Fig. l; the latch Z is depressed and moved out of engagement with the hook 8. thereby allowing the second sliding part i to continue its movement alone.
The second sliding part 2' is formed at one side with a ring t which 1s adapted o re-- ceive a vertical pin 20 fixed upon the tone arm 10, shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. The vertical pin u is shown as carried by the upper part of a clamp '0, which is detachably fixed on the tone arm w. The second sliding part i is provided with a feather in which may be formed in one with the fixed hook a to p cventthe sliding part i rotating upon the horizontal arm (Z.
The tone arm on can be raised without disconnecting the pin u from the ring t because the vertical rod 0 is free to rise in the bearinc: 6.
The apparatus is used in the following manner :The set screw 7' is screwed upwards and the part i is pressed into contact with the part it thereby causing the hook s to engage with the latch 7/. The ring 2% is passed over the vertical pin i/ at the upper part of the clamp c which surrounds the tone arm to. As the tone arm in and horizontal arm (Z pass across the record .2. it it is desired to repeat any particular part of the record. the set screw 5 is screwed down thereby lowering the latch clamping the part it to the horizontal arm ml and releasing the part i which continues its u'iotio-n actuated by the tone arm. When t is desired to repeat the part of the record the sound box 51 is lifted by hand and the tone arm '20 moved round until the hook 9 carried by the part i is in contact with the part h when the sound box is lowered. This particular part of the record can be repeated as often as desired. The scale 0 enables one to keep a note of any particular position in which the part It has been clamped.
If the sliding: part 'i be lamped by its screw upon the rod (Z in any position be fore the needle has reached the end of the record 2 the sliding part will be arrested. but the needle will. automatically jump back one or two grooves due to the ring it loosely fitting the pin it and due to the action of the grooves upon the needle, thereby enablina' the one or two grooves to be repeated automatically as many times as may be desired.
It will be understood that the clamp or may be replaced by a permanent band upon the tone arm carrying the vertical pin it. which modification is not shown as it will be readily understood. It will also he understood that the clamp 42 may be inverted so that the pin a is hanging downwards. in which case the horizontal arm (Z is also inverted after releasing the set screw 0 and will then operate beneath the tone arm to.
What I claim as my invention is 1. Means tor enabling the needle ot a sound reproducing instrument to be set back to any desired point of the record comprismg in combination a vertical hearing fixed upon the casing. a horizontal arm carried by and adapted to rotate 1n said bearing, two
sliding parts upon the horizontal arm, the first sliding part having means whereby it may be connected to the second sliding part and having means whereby it may be clamped to the horizontal arm, the second sliding part having means for engaging the first sliding part, and means whereby it may be connected to the tone arm of the instrument substantially as set forth.
2. 4. Means for enabling sound reproducin instrument to be set back to any desired p .nt of the record comprising in combination a vertical bearing fixed upon the casing, a horizontal arm carried by and adapted to rotate in said bearing, two sliding parts upon the horizontal arm, the first sliding part having a spring latch, the second sliding part having a fixed hook to engage the spring latch carried by the first sliding part, and means whereby the second sliding part may be connected to the tone arm of the instrument. substantially as set forth.

Means for enabling the needle of a sound reproducing instrument to be set back to any desired point of the record comprising in combination a vertical bearing fixed upon the casing, a horizontal arm carried by and adapted to rotate in said bearing, two sliding parts upon the horizontal arm, the first sliding part having means whereby it may be connected to the second sliding part and having means whereby it may be clamped to the horizontal arm, the second sliding part having means for engaging the first sliding part, means whereby it may be connected to the tone arm of the instrument, and means whereby it may be clamped to the said horizontal arm substantially as set forth.
7. Means for enabling the needle of a sound reproducing instrument to be set back to any desired point of the record compris ing in combination a vertical bearing fixed upon the casing, a horizontal arm carried by and adapted to rotate in said bearing, a groove in the upper surface of the said horizontal arm, two sliding parts upon said horizontal arm. the first sliding part having a spring latch acting as a feather within the said groove, and, means for depressing the spring latch and clamping the first sliding part on to the horizontal arm, the second sliding part having a fixed hook to engage with the said spring latch, a "feather sliding in said groove, means for clamping the sec ond sliding part upon the said horizontal arm, and means for connecting the second sliding part to the tone arm of the instrument substantially as set forth.
8. Means for enabling the needle of a sound reproducing instrument to be set back to any desired point of the record comprising in combination a vertical bearing and a 7 vertical rod adapted to rotate within said bearing, a horizontal arm, means for fixing said horizontal arm at any desired point upon the said vertical rod, two sliding parts upon the horizontal arm, the first sliding part having means whereby it may be connected to the second sliding part and having means whereby it may be clamped to'the horizontal arm, the second sliding part having means for engaging the first sliding part, and means whereby it may be connected to the tone arm of the instrument substantially as set forth.
9. Means for enabling the needle of a sound reproducing instrument to be set back to any desired point of the record comprising in combination a vertical bearing fixed upon the casing, a horizontal arm carried by and adapted to rotate in said bearing, two sliding parts upon the horizontal arm, the first sliding part having a latch, a screw passing loosely through the body of the first sliding part into said latch. a spring located between part of the body of the first sliding part and the head of the screw, a second screw passing through the body of the first sliding part and acting to depress the spring latch and clamp the first sliding part upon the said horizontal rod, the second sliding part having means for engaging the spring latch and having means whereby it may be connected to the tone arm of the instrument substantially as set forth.
