. LTGHTING 'ATTACHIVIENT 'FOR 'PHONOGRAPHS.
To all whom it may concern: I
. Be it known that 1, WILLIAM C. MONEY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of l Vashington, District of Columbia, have'invented certain new. and ,useful Improve-f ments in Lighting Attachments for lhonographs, of which the following is a speciiication. v t
It is the object of my invention to prov1de a simple andv effective lighting attachment when the record is being placed in or re-,
moved from position or the needle and sound box are being placed in position.
The invention is shown in the accompanye 3 ing drawings in which Figurel a perspective view of a portion of a talking ma I chine of ordinary construction with my attachmentin place and with the light in action, the lid of the machine being in its raised position.
Fig. 2 is a view of a detail.
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the lamp.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the attachment. I
In the drawings 1 indicates the upper portion of the case of an ordinary talking machine. 2 represents a portion of the lid in raised position. 3 indicates the record for the sound boX at and 5 the needle or stylus. The lid 2 when raised may be held in its elevated position by the ordinary brace rod or arm 6 which is pivotally mounted at 7 on the lid and as in ordinary practice, this arm has its lower end passing through a slotted plate 8 in the top of plate or board 9 of the casing over which the record lies. The arm 6 has the ordinary means for engaging the plate 8 when the lid is raised so as to maintain the lid in its elevated position and for this purpose the arm is suitably notched to engage the supporting member. Further, as in ordinary practice when it is desired to lower the lid the arm 6 is displaced by giving it a slight forward movement to disengage its lower end so that it may then pass freely down through the slotted plate in the closing action of the lid.
The lighting device of my attachment Application filed. May 26, 1919. Serial 110.2%,694,
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug; 31, 1920?.
l comprises an incandescent lamp 10 arranged at the end of, a standardv 11 which. extends.
up from a jbase member 12 ,the standard being curved laterally at its upper end so that. the incandescent lamp may be arranged co axially at the endof this standard'which is provided with'ia large head portion 13 socketed to receive the bulb or incandescent lamp. This lamp has a reflector 14L consisting of a metal piece which is of cylindrical form at its base portion and is splitso that it maybe thrust on the cylindrical surfa-ce of the head and clip thereon by frictional contact and by the slight spring efiect derived from the arms formed by splitting the cylindrical portion. This reflector is cut on an inclination at its forward end so that it will overhang the lamp at; its upper portion and by reason of the incline a free space will be provided under the lamp for the emission of the light rays and the reflected tery16, which battery may rest upon the V topplate or board of the talking machine casing. This battery is connectedby wire 17 with a clip 18 in the form of a hook which may readily be engaged with the arm 6 be ing held thereto by frictional contact and by slight spring of the hook.-
' In order to completethe circuit I place a contact member 19 consisting of a thin piece of metal having its base portion bent at right angles and secured adjacent the lower end of the arm 6. This contact member may be held by the same screw which holds the metal guide plate 8, it being insulated from the said plate; This contact member,
as above stated, is of thin sheet metal and has sufficient resiliency to yield slightly when it is borne upon by the edge of the arm 6 when this arm is set in inclined position by the raising of the cover 2. The
contact 19 is connected with the lamp through the wire 20 and this completes the circuit. The standard 11 is hollow so that the circuit wires pass through this standard to the lamp.
As shown in the perspective view the lamp is set in position simply by resting its base member 12 upon the top board of the casing adjacent the record and by setting it in proper position the light from the lamp will be shed down upon'the record and upon the needle and sound box so that these parts may be placed and removed or the inscription on the record may be seen readily.
- arm 6.
7 to lift the lid of the phonograph whereupon the arm 6 in seating itself into locking position to hold the lid will come against the spring contact 19 and the circuit will be closed to light the lamp so that the parts to r be inspected or manipulated or the point where the record is to be placed may be readily seen.
the lamp will be put out. This breaking of the circuit takes place automatically because, in order to close the lid it is necessary to move the brace or supporting arm 6 at its lower end to detach it from'its supporting part, and when the lid moves down i "the arm 6 will naturally move a slight dis tance away from thi contact 19.
' By my invention battery current will be saved, as the lamp is lighted only when the lid is raised to place a record or renew a V needle. The'lamp may be set in any desired positionbecause it is furnished with a self supporting base and is not permanently attached to any part of the casing. No switch is necessary for turning onthe current and waste of current is insured agalnst by the fact that the putting out of the lamp follows as a result of lowering the cover which Now when the lid is closed" contact will be broken at the point 19 and scratch of the needle.
In applying my attachment no alteration in the standard makes of machines is necessary. The attachment is itself contained in the sense that all of its parts are connected together and may be set in position by simply resting the battery and the lamp stand in convenient portions on the top plate or board and connecting the contacts, one with the brace 6 and the other with the frame to be borne upon by the brace when raised. v
The spring member 19 is suitably insu-, lated by a piece of fiber or other material placed between its base and the upper face of the plate 8.
I claim as my invention:
In combination with a talking or like machine, having a top plate movable cover with a brace arm for holding said cover elevated, a lighting attachment comprising the top plate to be borne upon by the brace when the cover is open and to be free from the brace when the cover is closed, thereby to control the lamp, substantially as described. I
In testimony whereof I atfix' my signature.
