This invention relates to an, improvement in eye sets for dolls and similar toys, and particularly tothe manner ofconstructing the eye set and attaching it within the dolls head or other toy.
An object of the'invention is to provide an eye. set so constructed that may be quickly and easil attached in position w1thin the dolls head and so that when attached the eyes themselves willube .suitably yield-- ably supported for uniformly etficient performance of their every function.
A further object is to provide an' eye set including a supporting carrier for the eyes which carrier is assembled with the eyes preparatory to placing the eyes in operativeposition and which when the eyes are in operative position may be easlly and efliciently connected with the dolls head to serve in maintaining the eyes .in operative position. 5

Referring to the drawings for describin in detail the structure therein shown the re erence character L indicates a dolls head, it being understood that although a dolls head is referred to herein nevertheless this invention is equally adaptable for use with other toys .in which moving eyes are utilized. The dolls head has the usual eyesockets 2 and 3 at opposite sides of the nose portion 4, and beyond the eye sockets has the usualcheek 100 portions 5 and 6.
The supporting carrier comprised in this invention is indicatedgenerally by the reference character It consists of a body portion 7 which is adapted to extend horizontally across the interior of the dolls head from cheek portion to cheek portion and which has an eye carrying portion 8 inter:

The body portion 7 of the carrier G is 10 made from an elongated piece of sheet metal bent into channel form, as most clearly 'illus trated in Fig. 4, and withinthe channel of this part is arranged a pair of attaching members 10 and 11.
Theattaching members 10 and 11 are lon gitudinally slidable along the channel 7 and their outer end normal positions, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 5 and their movement outwardly for driving the tangs 12 into, embedded relation within the cheek portions of the dolls head is not-performed until after the body portion has been moved into the proper and correct position for disposing the eyes H-H into their appointed co-operative relationship with the eye sockets 2 and 3, as will be readlly understood bythose skilled in this art.
Since it is intended that when the attaching members have been once driven out wardly into the cheek portions of the dolls head they shall thereafter maintain their positions for continuing to properly support the eyes, the attaching members are fitted so tightly within the channel provided within I the body rtion 7 that retrogressive movement of t e attaching members will not be likely.
Here it ma be explained that a proper tightness of t of the attaching members within the channel of the body portion is readily afforded during the manufacture of the eye set by placing the attaching members in their inner positions within the channel before the channel is fully completed, that is during the time while the marginal flange portions as 13 are outstanding, as seen by the dotted lines in Fig. 4, and by then bending said flange portions downwardly about the attaohin members. The frictional grip thus provide upon the attaching memberswill hold the attaching members firmly in any position into which they are forcefully moved along the channel. These same openings may be utilized for engagement, by the tool to drive the attaching members outwardly if desired but usually it is preferable to engage the tool against the in er end edges as' 1515 of the attaching mem ers'for this purpose.
The opposite ends of each of the attaching members are preferably identical since by this means the workman in assembling the eye set is not called upon to distinguish between the diflerent .ends of the attaching members.
By reference to the modification seen in Fig. 7 it is pointed out that if desired the attaching members may be so formed as to provide several points of weakness as at 16 -16 connecting together two longitudi nally extending rod like portions 17 17, the tangs 1212 being directly at the opposite ends of these rod like portions. The purpose of this arrangement. is to enable the attaching member to become more or less distorted out of its original shape'if such distortion is desirable during the time while the attaching member is being forced into the material of thedolls head'. If for instance one of the tangs 12 should engage thematerial of the dolls head before the other tang, or should meet an unexpectedly resistant obstacle in the material of the dolls head. the weakened portions 1616 would enable the attaching member to bend upon said weakened portions and allow the other tang to IDOX'G forward until the resistance of both tangs is substantially equal whereupon the further outward movement of the attaching member would be uniform asregards both tangs.
When the body portion 7 has been once placed in position and the attaching mem-- bers have been moved outwardly said body portion will thereafter be rigid with the dolls head.
The eye carrying portion 8 of the carrier G may take any desired form, its essential characteristic being simply'that it serves to resiliently support the cross rod 9 for holding the eyes H- -H universally resiliently pressed, with a light springpres ure, against ,the eye sockets 2 and .3. 'The iorm of the attaching'portion shown in Figs. 1 to 5.consists of a pair of bifurcated arms as 18-18 struck-out from the materlalof the body portion 7 and bent forwardly in parallel relation spaced apart, together with a single light coil spring 19 arranged in position encircling both of sa d arms and'having one off lOS its ends pressing against theforward surface of the body portion 7 and having its opposite end pressing against the cross rod 9.
The cross rod 9 extends in a direction parallel with the length (if the body portion 7' movement of the cross rod in all directions within said slots, The parts of each arm, at
opposite. sides of the bifurcations, are so shaped at their outer ends, as at 20-20, as to reduce the width of the slots 19 at said outer ends for preventing the accidental disconnection of the cross rod outwardly through the open ends of the slots during the handling of the eyeset prior to attachment within a dolls head. The space'between the portions, 20 20 is slightly less than the thickness of the cross rod. The portions of the arms carrying the portions 2020 however are slightly resilient with respect to each other so that duringthe assembly of the eye set the cross rod may be readily sprung into the slots by spreading the portions 20--20. I
The eyes H- H may be connected with the cross rod 9- inany approved manner, it being understood. that the eyes are longitudinally and rotatably adjustable upon the cross rod, as by meansof. sleeves 21 carried by the eyes and telescoping over the ends of the rod, as may be required to properly space and arrange the eyes for correctlymating the sockets 2 and 3. The pressure ofthe spring 19 against the rear side of the cross rod will at all times hold the eyes resilientlyagainst the sockets, andthe looseness of fit of the rod within the slots 19 will permit-the eyes to shift more or less in one d1re ction or the other as may be necessary to enable them to properly seat within-the sockets.

7. An eye set comprising a pair of eyes,
across rod extendin between and connecting said eyes toget er, a supporting carrler for said eyes, said carrier comprising a part formed of sheet metal bent-to constitute a guideway, a pairof attaching mem bers longitudinally slidable in said guide- -way, adapted to be projected beyond the ends 7 of said cguideway into engagement. with a doll hea' to hold the'carrier rigidly in positlon within'the doll head, and a part of said sheet metal being arranged to provide a bearing for the cross rod.

An eye set comprising a pair oieyes, a cro s'rodextending between and connectings id eyes together, a supporting carrier for said eyes, said carrier comprising a part formed of sheet metal bent to constitute a guideway, attaching members longitudinally slidable along said guideway into engagement with a doll head to hold the car rier rigidly in position within the doll head,
a part'of the sheet metal being arranged to provide a pair of bifurcated arms thereon gaging thecross rod to resiliently urge the eyes against their seats in a doll head, the
combination therewith of attaching means comprised in said carrier adapted to engage the doll. head at points adjacent the eye seats respectively to} thereby attach the eye setwithin the doll head.
10. 'An eye set comprising a pair of eyes, a cross rod to the opposite end portions of which the eyes are connected, a supporting carrier comprising an elongated member arranged with its opposite ends adjacent the eyes respectively, means upon the carrier intermediate its ends providing a bearing with which the intermediate portion of the cross rode'ngages, and means at the opposite ends of the carrier adapted for connecting the carrier to a doll head.
11. An eye set comprising a pair of eyes, a cross rod'to the opposite end portions of which the veyes are connected, a supporting carrier comprising an elongated member ar-' ranged with its opposite ends adjacent the eyes respectively, means upon the carrier intermediate its ends providing a bearing with which the intermedlate portion of the cross rod engages, and means at the opposite ends of the carrier slidably mounted thereon to move into engagement with portions of a doll head adjacent the respective eyes for thereby connecting the carrier to the doll 10 head.
