This invention relates to an eye set for dolls and simliar toys, and is in the nature of an improvement over the eye set shown and described in my pending application Serial No. 95,198.
An object of the present improvement is to provide an cflicient means for insuring a proper operative positioning of the eyes within the eye sockets of the doll head.
A further object is to provide. means whereby by the act of attaching the eye set within the doll head the eyes will be ad ustably moved and accurately located with respect to the eye sockets of the head so as to,
befree of binding engagement against the walls of said sockets.
' A further object is to so construct the eye set that it may be quickly and easily attached within the doll head, by relatively unskilled labor, and so that eye sets so attached will be uniformly efficient in their .co-operative movements withrespect to the eye sockets.
A further and more detailed object is to provide an eye set including a supporting carrier for the eyes, said carrier being adapted to be attached to the material of the doll head and includingelements which. by the act of attachment to the doll head, will func- I tion to ease the eyes of the set away from the eye sockets of the head into a certain and definitely prescribed relationship with the eye sockets.

Other objects and aims of the invention, moreor less specific than those referred to above, will be in part obvious and in part pointed out in the course of the following description of the elements, combinations, arrangementsof parts and applications of principles constituting the invention; and the scope of protection contemplated will be indicatedin the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings whichare to be taken as a part of this specification, and in which I have shown merely a preferred form of embodiment of the invention:-

Referring to the drawings for the purpose of a detailed description of the exemplary structure illustrated therein, the reference character L indicates a doll head. Although a doll head is herein shown and referred to, nevertheless it will be understood that this invention is equally well adapted for use in connection with any other toy or toys in which moving eyes areutilized. The doll head illustrated has the usual spaced eye sockets 1 and 2 at opposite sides of the central nose portion 3. Beyond the eye sockets 1 and 2 the cheek portions of the'head are preferably thickened as at 4 and 5 so as to reinforce the cheek portions in the region-adjacent to the eye sockets and so as to provide opposite interior wall] surfaces as 6 and 7 which are substantially parallel to each other andtherebv adapted to constitute proper and substantial supports for the eye set. I
The eye set comprises \two main elements, namely a supporting carrier G and an eye member H The supporting carrier G consists of a body portion 8 which is adapted to extend horizontally across the interior of the doll head from cheek portion to cheek portion and which has an eye carrying portion 9 intermediate its length adapted .to extend forwardly from the body portion for supporting the eye member The eye memberH consists of a cross rod 10 at opposite ends of which are mounted two eyesas 11 and 12, said eyes being adjustably connected with the'cross rod in any desired manner such for instance as shown in my Patents Nos. 1,566,105, 1,580,051, 1,578,834, and 1,566,966 or otherwise.
The body portion 8 of the carrier G is' made from an elongated piece of sheet metal bent into channel shape, and within the channel or guide-way it carries a pair of attaching members at 13 and 14.
The attaching members 13 and 14 are longitudinally slidable along the channel and their outer end portions are formed with prongs as 15 and. 16 which, when the attaching members are slid outwardly away from each other, sink into the reinforced walls 6 and 7 of the head.
Before the insertion of this eye set into the doll head the attaching members 13 and 14 are of course in their innermost or normal positions, that is so that their inner ends as 17 and 18 abut together, or nearly so, and their outer ends do not project obj ectionably beyond the outer ends of the body 8, and their movement outwardly for driving the prongs l5 and 16 into embedded relation within the cheek portions of the head is not performed until after the eye set has been .movedinto position with the eyes 11 and '12 held firmly into and against the eye sockets 1 and2 of the head.
Since it is intended that when the attaching members have been once driven outwardly into the cheek portions of the head they shall thereafter maintain their positions for continuing to properly support the eyes,

Each of me attaching members 13 and 14 is provided with a suitable aperture as 19, or other appropriate means, for co-operating with a tool to be used in operating the attaching members. The body 8 is also pro- "vided with an aperture as 20 or other appropriate means, which may be usable in conjunction with the tool and the openings 19 to assist in the proper operation of the attaching members by the tool as will be more fully.

In Fig. 2 the eye set is shown as it appears ust prior to the entrance of the prongs into the walls 6 and 7 of the head. Theeycs 11 and 12 are held close into and against the sockets 1 and 2 of the head and the inner walls/24 and 25 of bearing slots 23 are close against the cross rod 10. This is the position into which the eye set is moved and in which itis held preparatory to driving the attaching members into fixed relation in the cheeks of the doll head, it being understood that the tool or device employed for inserting and attaching the eye set within the head is of such form as to directly engage the carrier G and hold it 'in the position indicated preparatory to operating the attaching members. i
In Fig. 3 the eye set is shown as it may appear after the attaching members have been driven to a desired depth within the cheek portions of the head, and here it will be noted that, by reason of the inclined, or rearwardly bent, disposition of the pronged ends of the attaching members, the act of moving the attaching members from the position Fig. 2 to the position Fig. 3 has caused the carrier G to move rearwardly a distance determined by the amount of incline or bend of the prongs and the distance to which the prongs are driven into the cheek portions of the head, the prongs while moving into the material of the head, merely following the which the backward movement of the carrier 1s carried by th1s means may be thus determined with great accuracy and precision llll inclined planes of the prongs. The extent to and the eyes he thus given a desired degree would all be accounted for by the use of the present invention. When the'eyes are introduced into the sockets as in Fig. 2 they would encounter the undesirable features and when the attaching members are driven home as in Fig. 3 the eyes would move away from the undesirable features and thereby enable the unobstructed oscillatory movement of the eyes.
In all events, when the attaching members are driven home as in Fig. 3, the eyes would have, tight engagement neither with the eye sockets nor any parts thereof or with the rear walls 24 and 25 of the bearings 23. The amount of looseness of the eye member with respect to these parts will be a definite and predetermined quantity so that the eyes will be both desirably close within the sockets for proper external appearance and desirably loose with respect to its bearings andthe sockets to enable unobstructed oscillatory motion at all times. It may be correctly'said therefore that the movement of the attaching members into embedded relation within the material of the doll head causes an adjusting movement of the supporting carrier and of the eye member suitable to bring these parts into a desired adjusted position for proper functioning.
The channel or guide-way providedin the ward the sockets of the head if desired but these are ordinarily not required.
Any suitable means may be employed for causing the eye member to oscillate as the ,doll is moved from reclining position to upright position, etc., and for this purpose the drawing illustrates the usual Weight as 28 connected by an arm 29 with the cross rod 10. The gravity movements of the weight,
under change of the position of the doll, will oscillate the cross rod and cause the eyes to move between open and closed posi tions.
The parallel disposition of the'surfaces or walls ,6 and 7 of the doll head is a matter of considerable importance to the practical use of this'invention in quantity production.
In order that a tool for driving the attaching members into these surfaces or walls may be vused with suitably uniform efficiency by relatively unskilled hands the tool will pref! erably be made to move the attach ng members outwardly a given distance for all eye sets attached by it. Since the eye sets are of a uniform given size, and the prongs at the ends of the attaching members all of the same uniform angularity, and since the degree of backward movement of the carrier incidentto the driving inof the prongs 15 or one eye socket of the doll head may dependent upon the depth to which they are driven, it is apparent that the walls in all of the doll heads should be of uniform relavarious reasons the prongs of the attaching members will not always engage the exact same relative point'on the walls 6 and 7 of different doll heads. In different heads the point-of engagement may. vary to a considerable extent.
In order for the attaching members in succeeding doll heads to sink a uniform distance into the. walls 6 and 7, and thus produce uniform results in the adjusting movement imparted to the eye set it is quite neces sary that the walls 6 and 7 present surfaces WhlCll are practically parallel and which are of such extent as that substantially the same result will be attained by a given outward thrust of the attaching members into different portions of said surfaces. As many changes could be made in this construction without departing from the scope of the mvention as defined in the following claims, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings, shall be interpreted as illustrative only and not in a limiting sense. 1
For instance it is pointed out that the principles of this invention might be utilized in connection with the attachment of eyes Within doll heads or the like where the eyes are intended to be immovably held within the eye sockets. In this instance the pronged portions of the attachingmembers would simply be bent forwardly instead of backwardly, whereupon the movement of the attaching members into the material of the head would urge the eyes forwardly and thus causethem to bind immovably in any given position within the eye sockets.
- Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1.- An eye set comprising a pair of eyes and a supporting carrier therefor, attaching I n'eans comprised in said carrier by which to attach the carrier in position within a doll head, said attaching means consisting of a pair of pronged members movable with respect to each other to drive "the prongs thereof intovembedded relation within the material of the head, andsaid prongs being inclined with respect to each other to thereby cause an adjusting movement of the eyes with respect to the head co-incident with the movement of the prongs into the material of the head.
2. An eye set comprising a pair of eyes and a supporting carrier therefor, attaching means comprised in said carrier by which to attach the carrier in position within a doll head, said attaching means consisting of a pair of pronged members movable with respect to each other to drive the prongs thereof into embedded relation within the material of the head, the carrier providing a guide-way within which said attaching members are slidably movable in a straight line away from each other during movement of the prongs thereof into the material of the head, and the prongs of said attaching members being inclined with respect to said straight line to thereby cause an adjusting movement of the eyes with respect to the head co-incident with movement of said prongs into the material of the head.

The combination with a doll head having eye sockets, of an eye set therefor comprising a pair of eyes, attaching means for attaching said eyes within the doll head, said attaching means comprising parts movable to engage parts of the doll head for attaching the .eye set within. the doll head, and force producing means to positively adjust ably move a part of the eye set with respect' to the doll head coincident with the movement of said movable parts to attaching position. 4
4. An eye set comprising a pair of eyes and a supporting" carrier therefor, attaching means comprised in said carrier by which to attach the carrier in position within a doll head, said attaching means consisting of a pair of attaching members movable with respect td each other into engage 'ment with the doll head, and saidattachthe prongs thereof into embedded relation within the material of the head, and force producing means whereby the act of driving said prongs into the material of the head will cause an adjusting movement of the carrier with respect to the head. As an article of manufacture, a supporting carrier for the eye member of an eye set, said supporting carrier comprising a body portion shaped to provide a guideway therein, and being provided with means to pivotal ly support the eye member, and a pair of attachin members slidable along the guideway o the body portion, said attaching members having attaching portions adapted to engage the material of a doll head, and the attaching portion of one of said attaching members being disposed at an angle with respect to the attaching portion, of the other attaching member.
7. As an article of manufacture, a supporting carrier for the eye member of an eye set,
said supporting carrier comprising a body portion shaped to provide a straight line guideway therein and provided with means to pivotally support the eye member, a pair of attaching members, slidably received within the guideway of the body portion to slide in a straight line away from each other to drive their outer ends into embedded relation within the material of a doll head, and

15. he combination with a doll head having eye sockets, of an eye set therefor comprising a pair of eyes, attaching means for attaching said eyes within the doll head, said attaching means comprising part-s movable to engage parts of the doll head for attaching the eye set within the doll head, and force producing means'to positively adjustably move a part of the eye set backwardly away from the'eye sockets of the head coincident with movement of said movable parts to attaching position.
16. In an eye set comprising a pair of eyes, asupport for said e es, and attaching means operative to attach t e support to a doll head, the combination therewith of force producing means to progressively adjust said support coincidentwith the operation of the at-- taching means.
