M. W. FAHERTY RAM Filed Sept. 21, 1925 Patented Mar. 1, 1927.
UNITED STATES PATENT oEFICE.
Application filed September 21, 1925. Serial No, 57,771.
In a ram and cylinder combination as, for example, in a cotton-seed press, the cylinder is provided near its outer end with an annular groove for receiving a packing crimp. This crimp must be renewed from time to time and no satisfactory method has been devised heretofore for effecting this renewal without the cost of considerable time and labor. The usual practice is to remove the press box and the ram cap and to withdraw the ram completely from the cylinder. This frequently requires several hours work of three or four men. According to one expedient by which the removal of the entire ram is avoided, the ram is formed in two parts, the top part being detachable from the main bottom part for exposing the packing'crimp. The joint between the two'parts can, however, never be made entirely smooth and the consequent greater wear on the crimp necessitates a more frequent renewal thereof.
According to the present invention I pro vide means for preventing the ram from passing below the crimp in normal action but permitting the ram to fall below the crimp when it is desired to expose the packing. Specifically I provide a stop member in the lower part of the cylinder adapted to abut the ram for limiting its inward travel or to enter in a recess in the bottom of the ram upon a rotation of the latter so that the ram may pass inwardly beyond the crimp. I also provide an accessory implement for aiding in the manipulation of the ram.-
I shall describe my invention with particular reference to the accompanying draw ings, in which Fig. l is a top plan View of a rain cylinder and cap, the press columns being shown in section;
Fig. 2 is a section 011 the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 shows a portion of a view according to Fig. 2 (the parts being in different relative position) andin cross section an accessory implement; and
Fig. 5 shows the implement in top plan view.
Referring to the drawings, 10 is a hydraulic cylinder, 11 a ram working therein, while 12 is a ram cap supported on the outer end of the ram and having dowel pins 13 adapted to engage in corresponding recesses 141 in the ram. The ram cap is prevented from operationof the ram the recess 18 is at right angles to the abutment 16, as may be most clearly seen from Fig. 3. 1 Under such conditions the projection does not enter the recess and the inward travel of the ram is thus limited by the contact of wall 17 with the abutment so that the upper end of the ram is prevented from passing below the crimp 19. r
If, however, it is desired to change the crimp, the operating medium is introduced into the cylinder and the ram elevated.
The ram cap and press boxes are securely blocked in elevated position, whereupon the ram is allowed to descend and disengage from them. The annulus20 (Figs. 4 and 5) is provided with handles 21 having shanks 22 projecting through the annulus and adapted to engage in holes 14 of the ram.
The annulus is placed in position on the upper face of the ram and the latter is 1'0- tated' thereby throughan angle of degrees. This rotation brings the abutment l6 and recess 18 into register, and upon exhausting the pressure fluid from the cylinder the ram is permitted to descend to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, thereby bringing its upper face beneath the crimp 19 so that'the latter is exposedupon removing the annulus 20. The new crimp is .now inserted and the annulus readjusted in operative position, as shown in Fig. 1, so as to hold the crimp in place. The pressure fluid is now admitted to the cylinder and the ram lifted and turned by means of the handles 21 back to, its original position, in
which the instrumenta-lities 16 and 18 again assume the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In combination, a cylinder having an end wall element, a ram element in said cylinder, and an abutment on one of said elements intermediate the two elements, said abutment being normally adapted to abut the other of said elements on the inward stroke of said ram element, said other element having a recess, saidelements being relatively adjustable for permitting said abutment to enter said recess.
2. In combination, a cylinder having an end Wall element, a ram element in said cylinder, and an abutment on one of said elements intermediate the two elements, the other of said elements having a recess, said abutment being normally in non-registering position relative to said recess but being adapted to register with said recess; upon a rotation of said ram element relative to said cylinder, for the purpose described."
3. In combination, a cylinder having an end Wall element, a ram in said cylinder, an axial abutment of polygonal cross-section on one of said elements intermediate the two elements, the other of said elements having an axial recess of cross-section similar to said abutment, said abutmentand recess being normally in non-registering position but being adapted to register with each other upon a rotation of said ramelement relative to said cylinder, for the purpose described.
' 4. In combination, a cylinder having an end Wall, a ram in said cylinder, and an axial abutment of polygonal cross-section on said end ivall Within the cylinder, said ram having arecess of cross-section similarto said abutment, said abutment and recess lacing normally in non-registering"position but being adapted to register with each other upon a rotation of said ram relative to said cylinder, for the purpose described.
The foregoing specification signed at Los Angeles California, this 20th day of August, 1925. a i
MICHAEL FAHERTY.
