M 6y INVEYNTOR Patented Dec. 8, 1925.
JOHN M. McCAWLEY, or PERRY, OKLAHOMA raoxna.
Application filed July 25, 1923. Serial No. 653,798.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. MOGAWLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Perry, in the county of Noble and State of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Improvements in Packers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in packings especially designed for casing heads 1 of oil wells and has for an object the provision of a packing which may be renewed without permitting the escape of oil or casing head gas.
0 this end the invention aims to provide a double packing with means whereby one packing may be removed and replaced while the other packing remains in position, means being also provided whereby the remaining packing may be adjusted to an active position when replacing is necessary and thereafter released.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to
5 be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings Figure 1 is an elevation of a packing block constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a similar view at right angles to Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a plan view.
Figure 4 is a vertical central sectional view.
Figure 5 is a horizontal section taken transversely through the upper packing.
Figure 6 is a similar view through the lower packing.
Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates a packing block whose end 11 is adapted for connection with a casing head. This block is formed of two complemental members 12 and each member is provided with an elongated opening or slot 13 which extends transversely therethrough. This slot extends centrally of the member and is divided from a recess 14 by means of a partition 15, the said slot and recess opening into a central and longitudinally disposed semicircular groove 16. Whenthe members 12 are connected together'these grooves 16 provide an opening for the passage of the line or cable which extends into the well.
The" slots 13- are closed by meansof plates 17 which are removably connected to the opposite .outer'faces 'of the members 12 by means of bolts or other fastening devices 18, so that the slots 13 form in effect other reccsses. These slots and the recesses 13 and 14 have located therein what will be hereinafter referredto as upper packings 19 and lower packings 20, the packings being arranged in pairs and adapted to engage the lineor cable. The packings 19 and 20 may be of any suitable material and are preferably shaped to conform to the walls of the slots 13 and recesses 14, while contacting each packing is a follower plate 21 which is in turn engaged by an adjusting screw 22 so as to force the packings into proper engagement with the line or cable and to permit of their release.
The members 12 are detachably connected by means of upper and lower pairs of bolts 23 and 24 respectively.
N ormall the lower packings 20 are positioned slig tly away from the line or cable, while the upper packings 19 are adjusted to prevent the escape of oil or gas. When it becomes necessary to replace the upper packings, the lower packings are through their adjusting screws 22, adjusted to prevent leakage whereupon the plates 17 and the upper packings may be removed and the escape of oil and gas prevented during the operation. Other packings may be substituted and the lower packings 20 afterward released.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changesas properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention what is claimed is A casing head packer comprising a packing block formed of complemental sections, each of said sections including spaced side walls, a bottom. wall, a top wall, a partition between the top and bottom walls and end walls connecting the bottom wall and partition, said top and bottom walls and said partition having substantially semi-circular ble, packing elements within each chamber recesses therein, means to secure the block to engage the string or cable, removable 10 sections together to provide a closed packing walls for the open sides of the second menchamber and asecond packing chamber havtioned chamber and means to adjust the ing its opposite sides open, said semi-circupacking elements.
