DAVID WILLIAM FERGUSON, OF HARROLD, SOUTH DAKOTA.
'IRONING BOARD.
Application filed April 24, 1924, Serial No. 708,716. Renewed July 20, 1926.`
The invention relates to ironing boards, and has for its object to provide a device 'of this character which may be easily and quickly attached to a support, such for instance as the edge of a table, and supported in a horizontal position by a single leg, in combination with the table, said leg forming a clamping member for clamping one end of the ironing board to the table.
A further object is to form the leg, the clamping members and the pivot pintles of the board from a single piece of material, thereby reducing the cost of manufacture to a minimum.
wWith the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawing, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
' In the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of the ironing board showing the same attached to a table.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the rear end of the ironing board showing the same attached to a table.
Figure 8 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 3 3 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the ironing board and 2 the table top to which the ironing board is adapted to be attached. The table top is shown for purposes of illustration. However it is to be understood that the device may be attached to any other support, for instance a cleat secured to a wall. Secured to the under side of the ironing board 1 adjacent its rear end 3 is a transversely disposed bar 1i, which not only stiifens the board at its rear end transversely, but is provided with transversely disposed recesses d, which form bearings for the inwardly extending axially aligned arms 5 of the supporting legs 6. The supporting legs 6 when the device is in position for use inclines downwardly and outwardly as shown in Figure 1, and engages the floor beneath the ironing board. The supporting leg is provided with a U-shaped portion 7, the arms 8 of which are disposed at the opposite sides of the rear end of the board, and are spaced from the sides thereof. The upper ends of the arms 8 are bent at 9 thereby forming horizontally disposed arms 10, after which they are bent upon themselves to form arms 11, which extend down* wardly, and which carry the inwardly extending members 5, which are mounted in the bearings i of the bar 3, therefore it will be seen that the clamping jaws 12 which engage the upper side of the table top 2 and the members 5 and also the supporting legs 6 are formed from a single piece of material, thereby reducing the cost of 1nanufacture to a minimum, and at the same time insuring positive operation of the device. If so desired the clamping members 12 may be provided with rubber covering members 13, for preventing marring of the table. The table top 2 is clamped between the clamping members 12 and the rear end of the ironing board 1.
Frein the above it will be seen that an ironing board is provided, which may loe attached to a horizontal support, and during the ironing operation, the greater the pressure on the ironing board, the tighter the clamping operation. It will also be seen that the supporting leg and clamp are formed from a single piece of material, thereby reducing the cost of manufacture to a minimum.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is The combination with an ironing board adapted to be clamped on the edge of a horizontally disposed support, of a supporting leg and clamp, said supporting leg comprisinga ioor engaging member, the Lipper end of said iioor engaging member terminating in a U-shaped portion having arms extending upwardly above the ironing board and rearwardly horizontally, the ends of said arms terminating in members formed by bending said arms backwardly on themelves, said last named members terminating in inwardly extending axially aligned arms intermediate the ends of the arms of the U-shaped portion and having bearings on opposite sides of the board, said horizontally disposed portions of said arms forming clamping jaws adapted to engage the upper side of the support when the rear end of the boa-rd engages the under side of said support, thereby clamping the ironing board on the support.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
