Description
Feb. 22 1927. 1,618,904. H. C. ANDERSQN WRENCH I Filed April 29. 1926 Inventor fidflrzdemom,
Atjorgzey Patented Feb. 22, 1927.
UNITED STATES HAROLD CHARLES ANDERSON, OF MIAMI, FLORIDA.
WRENCH.
Application filed April 29, 1926. Serial No. 105,484.
My present invention pertains to wrenches, and contemplates the provision of a wrench designed more especially for turning nuts and embodying such a construction that it is adapted to be automatically locked on nuts of various sizes and is not liable to slip incident to turning of the nuts.
Other objects and practical advantages of the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims when the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming par of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a broken side elevation of the wrench constituting the best practical embodiment of my invention that I have as yet devised.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal central section taken at right angles to Figure 1.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in both views of the drawings. 7
My novel wrench is formed of steel or other appropriate material or materials and among other elements comprises two jaw members 1 and 2. The said jaw members 1 and 2 are identical in construction as will be understood when it is stated that each comprises a forward jaw portion 3, roughened at its inner side as designated by 4, an apertured lug portion 5 at the heel end of the jaw 3, and a handle portion 6 integral with and extending rearwardly from the jaw portion 3 and having a series of teeth or otherwise appropriately roughened portions 7 at its inner side and extending through a considerable portion of its length.
The wrench also comprises lever members 8, pivotally connected together at 9 and interposed between the jaw members 1 and 2. The forward ends of the lever members 8 are pivotally connected at 10 to the before mentioned lugs 5, and the rear ends of the said lever members 8 are toothed or roughened as designated by 11 and are arranged in opposed relation to the roughened or toothed portions 7 of the jaw members 1 and 2.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that in the practical use of my novel wrench, the jaw members 1 and 2 are adjustable to nuts of different sizes, and are susceptible of being automatically locked on nuts of different sizes when inward pressure is applied to the rear portion of the handles 6 of the jaw members 1 and 2. When locked in the manner described on nuts and other articles to be turned, it will be appreciated that there is no liability of the jaws 3 slipping from the article, and it will further be appreciated that my novel wrench is adapted to be expeditiously and easily applied and is also adapted to be conveniently manipulated for the powerful turning of nuts and other articles.
Manifestly when the rear portions of the handles 6 are moved away from each other the jaw portions 3 may be readily disengaged from the nuts or other articles referred to.
Notwithstanding the capacity of function ascribed to my novel wrench, it will be ap parent that the wrench is simple and inexpensive in construction, and is well adapted in general to withstand usage to which wrenches are ordinarily subjected.
I have entered into a detailed description of the preferred. embodiment of my invention in order to impart an exact understanding of the said embodiment in all of its details. I do not desire, however, to be understood as limiting myself to the structure shown and described, my invention being defined by my appended claims within the g scope of which modifications may be made without departure from my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:-
1. A wrench comprising jaw members roughened at their inner sides to form jaw members or portions and having apertured slugs at the heel ends of said jaw portions and handles extending rearwardly from the jaw portions and provided with roughened surfaces at their inner opposed sides, and lever members pivotally connected together and interposed between the jaw ,members and pivotally connected at their forward ends to the said apertured lugs and having roughened rear ends for cooperation with the roughened surfaces of the jaw members.
2. In a Wrench and in combination, jaw members with roughened portions, and lever members pivotally connected together and interposed between the jaw members and pivotally connected at their forward ends 1 with said jaw members and having roughened portions at their rear ends opposed to the roughened portions of the jaw members. In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
HAROLD CHARLES ANDERSON.
