AApplication filed October 7, '1921. Serial No. 506,096. v
My invention relates to improvements in cribs and has particular referencepto the means for locking the crib side or gate in elevated position. p
`The principal objects of the invention are to provide a crib having a side gate so ar-Y ranged that it-may be readily unlocked by an adult person, while at the same time, it is so securely held in elevated position that lo a child cannot unlock samev and fall out; to provide an improved arrangement which shall be neat and inconspicuous vand-shall 'not interfere in any way with the proper disposition of the bedding; to Lprovide an arrangement of the class described which may be unlocked by av comparatively simple manipulation and which will be practically self-latching whenv the crib gate' is raised into elevated position; to provide a construction which shall be simple and inexpensive to manufacture, and in general to provide animproved and efcient crib construction of thev character referred to.
In the drawings which .illustrate my in- 2'5V vention as applied to a crib made of wood,
Fig. 1 isa side elevation of the crib;
' Fig. 2 is asection taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. l;
Fig; 3 is a section taken on the line 3-'3V` of Fig. 1 but showingthe parts in slightly different position, and Y i Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Referringto the drawings, it will be observed that lthe main frame of the crib in# cludes a pair of corner post-s 10 and 11,'between which posts the crib side or gate 12 may be moved down or up in `order to render the interior of the crib more accessible or to preventv the occupant of the crib Vfrom falling therefrom. Said side gate 12 comprises Y a top rail 13 and a bottom rail 14, said rails being connected by a seriesv of vertical filler bars 15 suitably vsecured at theirV endsto said rails.
The extremities I equipped with cap members 1G which comprise end plates 17 having lug extensions, as at 18, bent down to enclose the ends of 55. cated at 21. Said locking pins 21 comprise said caps 20. Y
of the upper rail `13 are" the rail 13 and secured in place by suitable,v
small rivets, the heads of which are seated upon the ends of the rail'14 and the shanks of which. extend through apertures punched in dished portions 22 of the end plates of The horizontally Vdisposed lug parts of the caps 19 and 20 areperforated, asalso are the ends of the rails 13 and 14,*to admit ,the
vertically `extending guide rods'23, upon which the crib side 12 is slidably arranged. Each of said rods 23 comprises a somewhat flexible steel,V wire or rod` the upper end of which is bent at righty angles and inserted through Aan aperture drilled horizontally in the post 10 or 11, as the case may be. Said bentend portion 24 is rigidly maintained ,rigidly secured thereto'in any suitable manner, as by nails or screws728. Preferably,
(in or'der'to lessen noise and shock when the crib Y gate, is suddenly released, a rubber washer or bumper29, perforatedto admitr the rod 23, is placed upon the upper side of Y thebracket26. K I y rlhe interengaging means or members by which the crib gate is maintained in elevated positioncomprise the pins 21, heretofore referred to, and suitable brackets 30 secured to the sides of the crib posts by suitable screws V31- or other means. Each of ksaid brackets comprises a stamped metal member,
the intermediate portion 32r of which is n `spaced from and extends parallel with.- the n Vsurface of the corner post. Sai-d intermediate portion 32Yof the bracket'is formed or Acut out, as indicated best Vin Figs. 2 and 4,
to provide an opening or passageway 33 for the locking-'pin 21 and a seat Y34 for said locking pin. Preferably, suific'ient'metal is left in place to providea horn or yhook 35, which is located intermediate the seat 34 and the guideway or'passageway 33. 'Pref-V erably, the passageway under the hook 35 is formed with a curved or cam surface 36 which is engaged by the pin 21 as the latteniscarried upwardly when elevating the side. gate into locked or latched position. InV order to preventinterference with t-he free upward `movement` of the pin 21, the lower.
etl'ective by arranging inattere end oit the passageway 33 is extended into the bottoni leg or horizontally extending;` part 3T of the bracket 30.
The operation of the device is rendered so that the lower ends oi3 the crib side are normally forced in a direction to move the looking` pins 2l troni the passageway 33 into the seat Bel. ln the present instance the lovver eide of the gate le acted on by forcee tending to niove sinne outwardly. ln the preierred foi-1n of the invention Sai-d torce eilective to move the pine in the direction to lock the Side gato into position ie obtained not with additional epi-inde or other mechanism, but through the agency ot the guide rods 23 which are constructed of such .material and are otl such dimensions that before installation in the crib, they may he slightly bent or bowed ontivardly7 therein' canning saine to function as springe as Well ae guides.
Under norinal conditione the guide rods 23 assume a position snch that the pins 2l in the ende ot the bottoni rail 'lfl` locate theinselves slightly outside ofthe string-ht line extending` between the top and bottoni of the guide rode. ln order to latch the gate in elevated position .it merely necessary to elevate the side gate tar enough to enable the locking pine 521 to Snap beyond the pointe ot the hooks 85, and then to release the grate. The pins El will then aeenine the positions shown in Fig. 2 and the gato will be securely latched in elevated poeition.
In order to lovver the gate the saine ia lifted by the rod 13 'tar enough to enable the pin 2l to clear the top ofthe hook 55, whereupong upon a Slight inward preeeure of the knee against the middle oil the bottoni rail7 the rods 23 Will be fixed sutlieiently to shift the pins 2l into the top portionoit the paesageway 33 and beyond the points of the hooks 35. The side irate is then permitted to descend, ot course inaintainingl the slight inward pressure on the rail llfl- `until the pins 2l have dropped below the hoehe 35, The `gate ie then enabled to descend without further manipulation or ellort upon the part of the operator.`
The described detalle ot.' construction bey ing merely illustrative o'f a Single phase ot my invention, it will be understood that the scope of saine should he determined by re l'er ence tothe appended claims, ouch claims being construed as broadly as possible eonsistent with the state of the art.
I claim as .my invention.:
