Appli eation filed. February My invention relates to heating systems and appliances associatedtherewith, as well as the process for heating buildings, and more particularly tora furnace or stove in which coal or wood may alternatively be burned, the. air being heated by convection currents set up in said buildings by reason of the cooler air being conveyed to said stove or furnace, below the ash pit and to the rear of said stove or furnace; and thence ,to the stack, cooling the same, and thusconserving the heat so as to produce an exceedingly economical heating plant without the use of expensive piping.
It accordingly is an object of my invention to provide a novel form of heating appliance having a set of grate bars upon which a coal fire may be built, said bars being adapted to be lowered to form side walls to coact with a removableash pit sotliat' wood may be burned therein, a. draft regulating means being associated with said ash pit for startingjthe fire only, said means being closed after they fire has started,'and a set of passages associated with the bottom and rear of said appliance, said passages being used to set up convection currents in the building in which said appliance is positioned, the air entering said fines never reaching the fire.
It is also within the province of my invention to provide an additional set of openings in the rear wall associated with my novel. form of heating appliance for the. purpose of providing an'additional exit for V the products of combustion to the stack.
It is moreover within the province of my invention to provide a novel means of shaking the grate bars and also for lowering them so said grate bars will form side walls 7 to coact with the ash pit so wood may be burned in my stove or furnace.
lt is also an object of my invention to provide a novel form of apparatus which is simple in character, composed of a minimum number of parts, not easy to get out of order, economical and eiiicient in operation,

The ash pit is positioned below the cham ber and the grrtc bars 2-. and said ash pit contains a removable receptacle 3 for receiving the ashes from the coal burned on said grate bars, and also '-iu'nctions as a. chamher or fire pot within which wood may be burned, in this instance the grate bars 2 takinc the position shown in Fig. l. thus formting the sides for said fire pot.
The receptacle or drawer 3 is equipped with inclined sides. as shown more particularly in Figs. 3 and 4, and has associated externally oi the casing 1 av front portion or plate 12, which plate forms a closure to! said drawer The plate 12 is equipped with a means for regulating the draft of the fire,
when started, and this means preferably eomprises a slidable plate 13 equipped with holes 1 adapted to be brought into a lio uinent with similar holes within the plate 12. There may be any number of such holes as they may be of any desired size and character.

I there tore do not propose to be hunted to the exact details of constructionbut reserve the rip-ht in practice to malre any and all modifications thereof that lall within the scope oi the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. 4. In a heating apparatus, a casing, lower and rear chamber defining walls in said casing, a fire pot in said casing, draft regulating means fo said fire pot, astack for said casing, said rear Wall being'so positioned in said casing as to define a space for receiving the products of combustion and conveying the same to said stack, said rear Wall having also one or more apertures to provide additional'means for conveying said products of movable ash pit, a set of grate 'bars'pivotally associated with said fire pot, and adapted to be lowered to form sides for said ash pit so that wood may beburned therein and lural means externall of said casin and associated with said grate bars, whereby said grate bars may be shaken or lowered, sub
