Description

Feb;- 15,192? I J. W. GEORGE DEVICE FOR RIDING COMBUSTION IN FURNACES Filed Feb. 5, 1925 Patented Feb. 15, 1927.
untrue STATES JOHN W. GEORGE, OF OGDEN, UTAH.
DEVICE FOR AIDING COMBUSTION IN FURNACES.
Application filed February This invention relates to new and useful improvcn'ients in devices for aiding combustion in a fin'nace, by the discharge of air into the combustion chamber of the furnace above the grate.
An object of my invention is to arrange at least a portion of the heating chamber of the device for the incoming air in such a position so that the air is heated to a high degree before it is delivered to the furnace.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a portion of a furnace showing the device applied;
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the outer intake chamber;
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the inner chamber and the air delivering flues;
Figure 4 is a front view of the outer chamber; and
Figure 5 is a front view of the intake chamber.
The numeral 1 indicates the usual com bustion chamber of the furnace and 2 the usual the pot. The numeral 3 indicates the inner heating chamber attached by suitable fastening means 4: to the inside of the combustion chamber, or if desirable it may be secured to the door of the combustion chamher. This chamber 3 is preferably made of material of relatively high heat conductivity, but with a relatively high melting point. The numeral 5 indicates the outer intake chamber secured by the fasteningv means 4 in registry with the inner chamber 3, the outer chamber terminating in a some what restricted opening 6 which is controlled by a suitable damper 7. Extending inwardly from the inner heating chamber 3 are a plurality of air inlet flues 8. As disclosed in Figure 1, these flues enter heating chamber 3 near the bottom and have upturned ends 9 which terminate a short distance from the top of the chamber 3. As indicated by arrows, the air enters the air inlet 6 where it is primarily heated within the inner chamber 3 after which it is drawn through the fines 8 and delivered approximately centrally of the combustion chamlfir.
I claim:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a furnace having a 5, 1925. Serial N0. 7,122.
combustion chamber, of a casing connected with said furnace and communicating with the atmosphere, and a plurality of flues extending upwardly in a substantially vertical plane in said casing for Withdrawing air from said casing and discharging the same into the combustion chamber.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a furnace having a combustion chamber, of a casing connected with said furnace and communicating with the atmosphere, and a plurality of flues extending upwardly in a substantially vertical plane in said casing, the upper ends of said flues communicating with said casing and the lower ends thereof communicating with the combustion chamber.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a furnace having a combustion chamber, of a casing connected with said combustion chamber, and communicating with the atmosphere, and a plurality of fines communicating with said casing and extending outwardly therefrom, the outer ends of said flues being bent downwardly and upwardly and terminating in substantially the same horizontal plane as the point of connection with said casing for discharging in a general upward direction.
4:. In a device of the character described, the combination with a furnace having a combustion chamber, of a casing secured to a wall of said combustion chamber at a point within the chamber, and communicating with the atmosphere, and a plurality of fines connected with said casing and extend ing upwardly therein in a substantially vertical plane for withdrawing air from said casing and discharging it into the combustion chamber, the outer ends of said flues terminating in substantially the same ho izontal plane as the point of connection with said casing and discharging in a general upward direction. Y
5. In a device of the character described, the combination with a furnace having a combustion chamber, of a casing secured to an inner wall of said combustion chamber at a point within the chamber, an. outer casing secured to said furnace exteriorly of said combustion chamber and eommunicating with said inner chamber, said outer chamber being substantially V-shape in hori zontal section and terminating at its outer end in a constricted air inlet, a plurality of fines connected with said inner casing and extending upwardly therein in a substantiall vertical direction for withdrawing air from said casing and discharging it into the combustion chamber, the outer ends of said fines terminating in substantially the same horizontal plane as the point of connection with said inner casing, and discharging in a general upward direction.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
JOHN XV. GEORGE.
