To all whom it may concern- Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. Kun'rz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bloomfield, Essex County, in the State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furnace Attachments, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates to improvements 1n furnace attachments, and has for its object to provide an attachment for controlling the direction and supply of airpassing through the air inlet of the fire door ofa furnace, boiler, stove or other analogous apparatus.
Further, said invention has for its object to provide a device of this character by means of which the air passing through the air inlet of the fire door of a furnace or' novel details of construction, and in the com bination, connection and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and then pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, wherein like reference numerals refer to like parts.

Heretofore, in the operation of furnaces, boiler stoves and the like, it has been the common practice to permit the current of air passing through the air inlet of the fire door to enter the fire pot in a direction substantially parallel with the surface of the fuel bed whereby the air will be distributed over the entire surface thereof. found, byexperiment, that a more economical consumption of the fuel'is obtained if the incoming current of air,iinstead of being allowed to flow into the fire pot in the above described'manner, is deflected so. that it will becaused to impinge upon the fuel bed at l the front of the furnace, or other analogous apparatus. The result is obtained by the device forming the subject matter of this invention. i
Referring to the drawing 10 indicates a furnace ofany suitable type and construc tion, comprising a firepot 11, provided with a fuel charging opening 12, and an opening 13fwhichcommunicates with the s ok Stack or flue, through which the products ofcombustlon pass from the fire pct 11. The fuel charging opening 12 is provided with a fire door 15, of the usual construction, having an air inlet openingflti formed therein with WlllOlTiL damperal'? made to control the flow of air therethrough. In rear of the air inlet opening .16, andspaced therefrom,

' In order to cause the air entering through the air let opening 16 of the door 15, to be deflected 111 such a manner that it will impinge upon the bed of fuel within the firepot 11 at the front of the furnace 10, I provide deflector 20, preferably formed of sheet metal, adapted for attachment to the baffle plate 18 forming a part of the fire door 15. i l
The parts thus As shown, the deflector 20, has a hood 2 shaped body portion comprising a main dc fleeting wall 21, and side walls 22, 22, provided with grooves 23, 23, adjacent theiredges adapted'to engage the ends of the baflie plate 18. The side walls 22, 22 of the deflector 20 are of increasing width from top to bottom in order that, when the de-' flector 20 is in position, the'main wall 21 thereof will be inclined'inwardly and downwardly with respect to the fire door 15.
Lugs 24 24: at the top of the deflector 20, engage the upper edge of the baflie plate 18 to hold the deflector 20 properly positioned thereon.
The deflector 20 may be readily and quickly placed in position upon the baifle plate 18 by causing thelower ends of the grooves 23,23 to register with thevendsof the.
bailie plate 18, and then sliding the deflector 2O downwardly upon the baffle plate 18 until the lugs 24k, 24.- engage the upper edge thereof and thereby preventfurther down ward movement of the deflector 20. If the upperportion of the fire door 15 overliesthe baii'le plate 18, and thereby, prevents the pinge upon the bed of fuel within the fire pot 11 at the .front thereof.
Havingthus described my said invention what Iclaim and desire5to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a boiler, the.combin'ation of a firedoor, and abali ie plate thereon, with a defiector comprising an inclined main deflecting wall and side vWalls, means alongthe freeedgesof said sidewalls adapted to,enthe endso'f said baflie plate, and means onsaid deflectoradapted to engage with said baffle plate for supporting-the same upon said baflie plate, substantially as specified.
2. Ina-boiler, the combination of a [iredoor and a perforated baffle plate thereon, with a deflector comprising a downwardly inclined main deflecting wall, tapering end walls extending therefrom, channel members 4 along the tree edges of said tapering end walls adapted to engage said perforated bafl le plate at its opposite edges, and means at the upper edge of said main deflecting wall adapted toengage with the upper edge of said baflie plate to support said deflector in position thereon.
In a boiler, the combination or a [he door, and a perforated baffle plate secured thereto, with a deflector comprising a downmember andadapted' to rest upon-the upper I edge of saidbaflle plate to support said doflector in position upon said ba'me plate, substantially as specified.
