Description

1,617,825 F 15 1927' P. SCHERTL SAFETY POCKET Filed Feb. 25, 1925 INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Feb. 15, 1927.
UNITED STATES PAUL SCHERTL, 0F HOBOKEN, NEW JERSEY.
SAFETY POCKET.
Application filed. February 25, 1925.
The main object'of this invention is to provide a secret pocket in trousers which is calculated to be deceptive to holdup men and pickpockets.
Another object is to provide an additional pocket to the pockets 110w in use with trousers which is so concealed that it is not ordinarily apparent it exists.
Still another object is to provide a pair of pockets which bind at their mouths, one of which is provided with a lapping piece of material forming part of the trousers which cooperates with the portion of this pocket and is adapted to lock the same so that said pocket remains invisible.
The above and other objects will become apparent in the description below, in which characters of reference refer to like-named parts in the drawing.
Referring briefly to the drawing, Figure 1 is a front elevational view of the trousers, showing the position of the secret pocket therein.
Figure 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the trousers, parts being broken away showing the construction of the secret pocket and the usual pocket.
Figure 3 is a sectional top plan view of the trousers as equipped with the secret pocket.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numerals and 11 indicate the legs of a pair of trousers which are joined at their upper ends by an integral portion of the trousers material which is adapted to fit and cover the waist. This portion of material which covers the waist is usually provided with side pockets 12 at both sides of the trousers above each leg. These side pockets are entered thru a slit 13 which is usually of a size large enough to permit the ready insertion of the list thru the slit. The pocket 12 is usually comprised of a double piece of lining which presents a pair of adjacently formed walls 1 1 and 15 which encloses a chamber 16 in which miscellaneous articles may be stored on the person. In wearing a pair of trousers, the slit 13 of the pockets is usually spread apart slightly, and if a strip of material 17 were not provided, the lining material forming thepocket walls 1 1 and 15 could be seen and would be considered as unsightly. This stri of material 17 is of the same material as the body of the trousers and is stitched to said body at 18 on one longitudinal edge and is usually Serial No. 11,399.
jacent walls 19 and 20 between which the, chamber 21 of the secret pocket is formed.
The longitudinal edge of the wall 19 of the secret pocket is stitched to the inside surface of the strip 17 at 22, the stitch running downwardly thruout the entire length of the pocket. The opposite wall 20 of the secret pocket and the wall 15 of the ordi nary pocket are stitched together at 23, and the surface of the wall 15 of the usual pocket which may be seen by looking into the slit 13 is provided with resilient button members 24 which cooperate with complementary button members 25 which are sewed to a strip 17, the buttons 2% when interlocked with the members 25 being adapted to close and lock the secret pocket 21. iVithin the secret pocket between the strip 17 and the wall 19, resilient doubled metallic fingers 26 have their ends secured or sewn respectively to the wall 19 of the secret pocket and the finishing strip 17 and is adapted to spread the wall and strip apart and away from each other when the locking members 24 and 25 are released.
The pocket is used in the following manner. When desiring to open the pocket, the hand is inserted thru the slit 13 of the usual pocket with the fingers in clenched position. As the finger nails pass the free edge of the longitudinal strip 17, and slide down upon the surface of the wall 15 of the usual pocket the fingers are then in position to grasp the edge of the pocket. By reversing the movement of the hand, that is, by pulling the hand out again with the fingers in clenched position, the clenched fingers engage the edge of the strip 17 and lift said strip so that the locking members 2 1 are disengaged from the locking members 25 of the strip 17 and the pocket is spread open by the resilient fingers 26 so that ready access may be had to the chamber 21 of the secret pocket thru the usual pocket 12.
I claim In trousers, the usual side pockets and entering slits for said side pockets, a secret pocket concealed in the side pocket com secret pocket and the usual side pocket, and flexible doubled fingers joined integrally and mounted in the secret pocket between a Wall of the secret pocket and the strip, said fingers normally spreading the strip away from the Wall of the secret pocket When the locking means on the strip and usual side pocket is disengaged.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signa- 20 ture.
PAUL" SOHERTL.
