Specification forming part of Letters Patent No 161,759, dated April 6, 1875 application filed March 5, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JESSE A. CRANDALL, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Ohilds Rocker, Seesaw, or Double Rocker, Chair, and Sleigh, of which the following is a specification:

Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section of my improved seesaw, or double rocker. Fig. 2 is a top view, partly in section, of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same, showing it transformed into a single rocker and sleigh. Fig. 4- is a side view of the same, showing it transformed into a babychair.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

The object of this invention is indicated by its title-that is to say, it is to produce a childs rocker having but one seat, but which is capable of transformation into a seesaw or double rocker having a seat at each end and intervening foot-support, and also, if desired, readily convertible into a baby-chair, and, by the mere attachment of a tongue, into a sleigh. The invention consists, principally, in supplying the rocker with double sides, which can be folded together, so as to make a single rocker, chair, or sleigh, or extended lengthwise to-make a seesaw, or double rocker.

In the accompanying drawing, the letters A A represent the side pieces or profile frames of a childs rocker. These side pieces are made in the shape of a bird, horse, or of other suitable form, but invariably with convex rocking-surfaces a at the lower edges. The two side pieces A A are connected transversely by a toy-box, B, which is put between them near their front ends, and by a footboard, 0, as clearly shown in the drawings. D is the seat secured between the side boards A A behind the foot-board C, so that the child sitting on the seat D can rest its feet on the foot-board O, and play with the toys that are in the box B, and at the same time rock itself with its feet, or by taking hold of an upper front cross-bar, b, that connects the side pieces A above the box B. The seat D is pivoted at d between the side boards A A, so as to be capable of adjustment, for purposes hereinafter more fully set forth. E E are two outer side boards, pivoted at 0, respectively, near to the front ends of the side, so that each board E bears against the outer face of the board A, to which it is pivoted. The edges 9 of the side boards E E are convex on the same are of a circle as the rocking edges to. The boards E are as long as the side boards A A when both are folded together, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. A cross-bar, f, connects the rear ends of the side boards E.

\Vhen it is desired to form the toy into a seesaw, or double rocker, the outer side boards E E are taken hold of at their rear ends and swung forward on their pivots 0 into the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, by which motion their former upper edge 9 is made their lower edge. The side boards A and E will now be practically in line with each other lengthwise. A

stop, It, projecting from one or both of the side boards A into a circular groove, z, of one or both of the side boards E, or vice versa, arrests the latter at a position when the two rocking edges 0, and y will be in line to constitu e one single rockingsurface for the entire seesaw, as shown in Fig. 1. An extra seat, F, is in the seesaw, or double rocker, applied between the side boards E E, by being partly suspended from the crossbar f, and partly locked in place by bolts or other fastenings, m, that extend from the under side of the seat into notches or grooves of the side plates E E. The seat D is, in order to perfeet the seesaw, or double rocker, swung on its pivot d, and raised in proportion to the lowering of the front end of the rocker proper A, which is consequent to the more forward position of the frame E and attachment of the seat F. Were it not for this adjustability the seat D would slant too far downward in the seesaw, or double rocker, or too far upward in the rocker. When the seesaw, or double rocker,

is formed, the seat D is locked in the proper position by bolts j j, that enter from the un der side of the seat D into mortises or grooves j formed on the inner faces of the side frames A A. For use in the rocker the seat D is locked by the same bolts j in mortises In the seesaw, or double rocker, the box B serves as foot-support for the occupants of both seats. The rocker shown in Fig. 3 may also be used as a sleigh, in which case a tongue, G, is pivoted between the front parts of the side boards A A, as in Fig. 3. When this tongue is not to be used it is folded between the side boards A A under the seat D, and fastened to the seat by suitable fltstenings. It will in this position be entirely out of the way, as indicated in Fig. 1.

The rocker shown in Fig. 3 can be readily converted into a chair by putting it on end and adjusting the seat D accordingly, lookin g its bolts j into mortisesj. The chair shown in Fig. 4 will be supported on the front ends of the rockers A. The crossbar f ,of the side plates E E will extend in front of the seat D, to prevent the child from falling forward, While the boards A and E will constitute the side guards of the seat.

For using the chair it is necessary to lock the boards A and E together, as in Fig. 4, by hooks and eyes Z, or equivalent devices.

I claim as my invention- 1. A combined rocker and seesaw, or double rocker, composed of the rocking side plates A A, seat D, and folding side rockers E E, substantially as herein shown and described.

2. The stop-pin h and groove 2', in combination with the folding side plates A E of a combined rocker and seesaw, or double rocker, as set forth.

3. The pivoted seat D, arranged to be adjustable in a rocker, so that its position may be changed when said rockeris converted into a seesaw, or double rocker, or into a chair, substantially as specified.

4. The combined rocker and baby-chair, composed of the side platesA E, pivoted seat D, and cross-bar f, substantially as herein shown and described.
