of the casts carrying the anatomical portions,
fbe accurately and artistically trimmed.
One object of the present invention is to provide a model trimming machine in which a suitable planing knife is reciprocated by power to'make a rapid trimming of the cast. f l
Another object of the invention is to provide means for receiving and disposing of the shavings from such trimmingV action, so that theymay not collect on working parts of the machine or soil the laboratory in which the work is done.
Another object of theinvention is to provide means in a model trimming machine ot this nature which assists in the accurate presentationof the cast to the path of move-Y ment of the cutting knife, thus insuring accurate and artistic trimming of the model.
Y Y In' theaccompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation ot the complete model trimming machine; Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of one of the members 'constituting the lplane block of such machine; Figure 8 is a similar view of the other member of the plane block, illustrating the cut-ting bladeof the block and the manner of its atta'chmentv therein Figure 4 is an elevation of the blade engaging' face of the block member shown in Figure 2; Figure 5l is an elevation of the blade engaging face of the block member shown in Figure 3;'Figure 6 is a fragmentary 'vertical section through a porftion' of the plane block shown iii-Figures 3 and 5, illustrating the attachment cfa conv n'ectingA rod tothe plane block; Figure 7 is a similar'view illustrating a? modified attachmentA ot' the connectingV rod `to the plane 'block;` Figure 8 isa planvieiv'ot the work 'support-ing platformor table upon which the Vtac'hed by connecting pin 26.
In the drawings the reference numeral i1' designates the base of the machine, tobwhifch p i are attached uprights 2 supportinggnide members or rails 3 .and l for the plane block p 5. Plane blockV 5 has" thereinV upperv andk lower channels 6 and 7, which', respectively engage the upper andjlower-guid'e bars 3. and
t, and serve to mount the plane block t'or. reclprocation in the frame ofY the machine; l,
Plane block l5v is caused to reciprocate by lmeans of a connecting rod-5a, which' is pivotally attached to one end of an 'arm 8k having a pivoted mounting 9 in a bracket 10. For partV of its length thearm 8 i'sxdivided -into guide bars 8a providing a path 11 for a1 sliding head 12. Sliding khead 12 is `connected with a crank 13 iiXed on a shaft 141-. The shaft 14 is rotated' by means of a Wo'rmgear 15, which meshes with a worm 16 on a shaft 17 directly connected With *anV electric: mo-

The plane block 5 lcomprises two block members 19 and 20, connecting; rod 5a being attached to the. member 19 of the block.
This attachment, assho-wn in detailin Fi-gure `6, comprises a pin 21, 'Which passes through an orifice inthe block member `and K through the connecting rod 5a, the pin having necting pin 21.
In the modified kattachment shovvn i-nFig- -ure 7 of the drawings connectingrod 5a is Vattached to the block memberf19` by means of a bracket 2%y secured in a-.recess- 241m the Vbody of the block. `This bracket comprises by con-- Y lugs 25 to which the vconnecting rod is at-' The cutting blade 2701i' the 'planeblockv is -adjustably attachedfto vthe facef28 ofthe block member 19. For such attachment 3a Y recess or channel 29 is vprovidf-id in the :Eace, v
of the block membenand accommodates .screw 30 carryinga traveller 31 sl-idablein the channel 29. Screw,V 80 is rotatably mounted in a bushing 32 held in position'by strap 33, and is rotated by means of a winged head 34. Longitudinal movement ofh the screw prevented by a shoulder35 beary ing vagainst the bushing 32. The cutting blade 27 is adjustably mounted in the plane block by its attachmentv to: the traveller? 31.
' is recessed to embrace the blade. 4block members may be mutually connected holesf38 `adjacent the'edges ofv the'block as by means of screws passing through countersunkscrew holes 36 in the Vcutting blade and engaging thetraveller.
I As the cutting blade 27 extends outwardly Vfroni-tlieface 28 of block member 19 on a 'y considerable portion on the area of such the matchingface 37 of block member 2O The two means of bolts engaging in i'natehing bolt members Vx Azovk 'oft-he blade. vFrom passage 39a plurality of short passages or ports 40 lead to the the yblock members and avoids the necessity of la bevelled edge on the block member 2O for permitting exposure of the cutting edge lower surface of the plane block. In use Ofgthe Vdevice sha-vings from the' cutting. `blade 27 enterthepassage 39, and are der livered beneath the plane block by way of Vtliepassages or ports 40. A drawer 4l isy of the "machine to receive the shavings from the preferably provided in the base lV `planev blocln As the machine is used iii shaving plaster, the'shavings are finely di- 'vided, and readilyv flow tlirough'the passages i Asupporting the castwhile `presented to qthe r,39 and into the drawer 4l.
Adjacent the'faceV of the machineis a work supporting platform or table 42, for
" planel block.` For/accurately Vpositioning i. such cast on the work supporting table with Y Y 40' respect to the path of movementto the plane 4 justably mounted presser bar 43. This pressferbar is mounted in arcuate slots 44 in the block, the table-42is provided with an adtable by means of square headedbolts V45 and winged nuts'46- VThe shank of veach bolt fpa'sses through one of the slots 44 and through a vsl0t'47 extending longitudinally Yof, the presser bar, tovengage vone ofthe nuts i 46. Bythisvmoun'ting thepresserbar may A *be ladjusted on thework' supporting `table orv --platform '42 by movement along the arcuate fslots 44. V It may also be adjust-ed tothe delsired angle at which the cast is to be planed "by swinging the? presser bar VonV its attaching onl the upper surface'of the platform 42'and at rightfangles tojtheiplane ofthe Vcutting* '5'5 'bolt's. "An 'exact angular adjustment is facilitatedj by means'of'parallel markings 48 @an inset face 5lon'fthe block m'emberr20'.
theface ofthe plane `block proper andthe f and `Th'eou'terface of the plane block 5;,is ex v :tended longitudinally by means of a'guid'e plate 49, which isisecur'edrby screws 50 to guide plate, during the recipiocation of the plane block, since it prevents the entire face of the plane block passing beyond the work duringy reciprocating movement of the plane block. f Y
The dental model trimmer of the present invention has the great advantage of being motor driven, thus speeding upV the work of trimming the casts and leaving botli hands of the yoperator free for presenting the cast to the vcutting plate of the machine.V lt also presents'advantages over motor driven trimmers using a revolving blade. This .is loecause the larrangement is such that the cast may be easily positioned with respect to the cutting plate to secure the desired planing Y effect, and because tlierplaning` awayV of the materialY of the model may be easily observed' during the operation. It. therefore requires less skill lto use themachine than i to use a model trimmer having a revolvingV Y conibinau .tion of a machine frame, a plane block Vmounted for reciprocating niovemeiitin the frame, means for reciprocating the plane Y block, a work supporting table mounted in the path of movement of the plane block and having arcuate slots therein, a slotted presser banand fastening members passing through Y the slot in the presser bar andthe slots in the table for fastening the presser bar inV ad-Y Vjusted position on the table 2.
