To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALLUWEE C. ANDREWS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenville, in the county of Hunt and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Mortising-Machine, of which the following is a specification.
There is a well-known general type of machinewhichmay be called, or used as, a lathe or boring mill, whichtype comprises a rigid bed or frame and, parallel thereto, a powerdriven shaft having a free end overhanging the bed to receive a tool, such as a lathe center, a chuck or a boring bit.
It is the object of this invention to provide a complete attachment for a machine of the sort above-mentioned, the attachment comprising a bracket, a hollow chisel, and an appropriate interfitting boring bit, together with means for detachably securing the 'bit to theshaft, and the bracket to the bed, the attachment comprising, also,.means for locating the bit and chisel, and relatively adjusting such location with respect to the bracket, to correspond with the varying relations of the power-driven shaft to the bed, a work support and reciprocating carrier being provided, and means being supplied for adjusting the plane of said work support with reference to the location of the chisel and bit.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows in top plan, a device 0011- structed in accordance with the invention; Fig.2 is a side elevation wherein parts are broken away; Fig. 3 is a transverse section wherein parts are broken away, the view being in substance, an elevation; Fig. 4 1s a perspective view delineating the bracket.
In carrying out the invention there is provided a frame 1 which may be variously constructed. V The frame may be represented by the shears of a lathe, the numeral 2 denoting'a motor, capable of running at different speeds, and including a shaft 3.
In Fig. 4 of the drawings there is shown an angle bracket 4 comprising a horizontal flange 5 and a vertical flange 6, there 'being'an opening 7 in the flange 5, the flange 6 having elongated transverse slots 8. The flange 5 of the bracket 4 rests on the frame 1, the flange'tiextendin'g upwardly. A securing device, such as a bolt 9, is mounted in the opening 7 of the bracket 4 and passes through abar 10 hearing against the lower edge of the frame. The construction,

clearly, is such that the bracket 4 may be adjusted longitudinally of the frame 1.
The numeral 11 designates a carrier, which may be in the form of a plate provided in its lower edge with a notch 12 receiving the frame 1, as delineated in Fig. 3. Clamp bolts 14 are mounted in the carrier 11 and are received in the slots 8 of the angle bracket 4, the construction being such that the carrier 11 may be adjusted vertically on the flange 6 of the angle bracket. In the upper portion ofthe carrier 11 there is an opening 15 receiving the chisel 16 of a common mortising tool, including a rotatable member 17 held in the shaft 3 of the motor 2 by a set screw 18 or the like. The chisel 16 of the tool is held in the opening 15 of the carrier 11 through the instrumentality of a set screw 19 threaded into the upper edge of the carrier. The carrier 11 is supplied in its forward surface with vertical guide grooves 20 which are of dove-tailed Elongated slots 21 are fashioned in the carrier 11 at the bases of the guide groove 20.
Horizontally disposed supports 22, in the form of arms, are provided, the supports 22 being connected, if desired, by a rod 23.
The rear ends of the supports 22 are supplied with ribs 24 received slidably in the guide grooves 20 of the carrier 11. Binding screws 25 are threaded into the rear ends of the arms 22 and are adapt-ed to move in the slots 21 of the carrier 11. The supports 22 may be raised and lowered on the carrier 11 and by tightening the binding screws 25, the supports can be held in any position to which they may have been adjusted vertically.
A horizontal table 26 is slidable on the supports 22, toward and away from the carrier 11, or, speaking more directly to the point, toward and away from the mortising tool 1617. In the underside of the table 26, dove-tailed guide grooves 27 are fashioned, these grooves receiving ribs 28 on the upper edges of the supports 22, a construction thus beingprovided whereby the aforesaid horizontal movement of the table 26 is made possible.
An abutment 29 is adjustable on the table 26, toward and away from the tool 1617, and it may be expedient to use for an abutment, a bar of wood disposed transversely of the table. In the upper surface of the table 26 there is a dove-tailed groove 30 wherein a clamping block 31 is slidable. A screw 32 is freely rotatable in the abutment 29 and is threaded at its lower end into the block 31, the screw being supplied at its upper end with a head 33, facilitating the rotation of the screw. The abutment 29 may he slid on the table 26, toward and away from the tool 16-17, to accommodatejmaterial of different widths. When the screw 32 is rotated, the block 31 will be drawn upwardly and will bind in the groove 30, the abutment 29 being held, in this way, in adjusted positions,
A means is provided whereby the table 26 and the abutment 29 may be reciprocated on the arms 22, to the end that the material may be advanced toward the tool 16-17. Having the'foregoing in mind, a pedal 34 is fulcrumed at 35 in any desired way, and is connected by a link 36 to a bell crank lever 37 mounted to swing on the rod 23. A link 38 unites the bell crank lever 37 with a lug 39 which depends from the table 26.
Since the carrier 11 is vertically adjustable with respect to the bracket 6, the tool 1617 may be adjusted vertically, so as to cooperate with the shaft 3 of the motor 2, the machine thus being adapted for use, regardless of the distance between the shafts 3 and the frame 1, measured vertically. The supports 22 and the table 26 may be adjusted vertically on the carrier 11, and, consequently, the tool l6l7 may be made to operate at any desired distance above the lower edge of the piece of material which is placed on the table 26, in engagement with the abutment 29. Since the abutment 29 may be adjustedon the table 26, toward and awayfrom the tool 16-17, material of different widths may be worked upon, the distance between the abutment and the tool 16-17 being regulated, as desired. When the pedal .34 is depressed, motion is transmitted to the table 26 by way of the link 36, the bell crank 37 and the link 38, the table, the abutment 29 and the piece of material being advanced toward the tool 1617, which, under the impulse of the motor 2, will exercise its obvious function.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. A mortising attachment for a machine having a bed or frame and a power-driven shaftspaced from and parallel to said bed or frame, said attachment comprising a bracket adjustable along the frame; a carrier adjustable on the bracket transversely of the frame; a hollow chisel on the carrier; a support adjustable on the carrier transversely of the frame; a table mounted for reciprocation on the support toward and away from the chisel; an abutment adjustable 011 the table toward and away from the chisel; means for reciprocating the table; means for retaining all of the aforebracket; a carrier adjustable on the bracketin the direction of the length of the carrier; a hollow chisel on the carrier; a support adjustable on the carrier in the direction of the length of the carrier; a table mounted for reciprocation on the support;
toward and away from the carrier and the i chisel; an abutment adjustable on the table toward and away from the chisel; means for reciprocating the table; means for retaining all of the aforesaid adjustable parts in adjusted positions; a boring bit in said chisel; and means for connecting said bit to said shaft. r I r 3. A mortising attachment for a machine having a bed or frame and a power-driven shaft spaced from and parallel to said bed or frame, said attachment comprising a a bracket adjustable along the frame; a carrier adjustable on the bracket transversely of the frame; a hollow chisel on the carrier; a support projecting from the carrier; a table mounted for reciprocation on the support toward and away from the chisel; means for reciprocating the table; a boring bit in said chisel; and means for connecting said bit to said shaft.
