IMPROVEMENT IN SLATE-FRAMES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 161,732, dated April 6, 1875; application filed January 26, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J OHN H. BARBARIGK, of Oasco, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Slates; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to slates such as are in use in schools, and for other purposes.

My invention consists in certain additions to the slate of common construction, which additions and improvements are as follows: In one side of the frame of a slate I make a slot or channel of proper depth to contain the articles I intend to place therein. This side, or part of the frame in which the slot is made, is sufficiently wider than the other parts of the slate -frame to admit of the making of the channel. Such a part is seen at a. The slot or channel a is cut into the outer edge of the frame. Over this channel is placed the cap or bar b. This bar b is intended also to serve as a rule or measure. With this object it will have the usual scale indicated thereon.

. This bar may have bifurcated ends to fit over tcnons, or it may be made plain. It is secured, when placed over the channel in the part at, either by an elastic strap or band, 0, arranged to turn up over and ofi the bar, and

be capable of ready and easy adjustment. Into the channel or slot are to be placed the pencils, pen-stalks, a slip of writing paper, a sponge, and such other like articles as may be required for use in connection with the slate. This part of my invention is for a receptacle cut into the outer edge of a part of a slateframe, and having a removable cover to be used as a rule, the said cover to be secured, when placed over the channel, by an elastic or other band or clamp to hold the same in place. The part of the frame into which this slot or channel is cut is of necessity somewhat wider than the other parts of the frame.

I also cut into some one of the other parts of the slate-frame a recess like that shown at 01. Over and around this I fit a cap, 6. It may serve as the receptacle for the sponge, if too damp to place with the other articles named in the other receptacle described.

The cap of this second receptacle may be of sheet metal and pivoted to the frame, so as to turn off or up on such pivot, or so made as to lift clear from the frame.

lVith my invention all the articles usually used with the slate are packed or placed with it, and can be sold with it.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A slate-frame, provided with the channel a, the rule b, elastic band 0, incision d, and cap 6, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
