Application-sied catetere, 1924. seriaiim.-742,63@'V `This 'invention appertains to an'improved tool for straightening bent and vdamaged rims of automobile wheels andthe primary object of the invention is to provide a novel tool which can be effectively used for quickly straightening outbentxtirerims of automobile wheels, the tool embodying novel means for engaging` the lflanges of bothy clincher and straight sided rims. 'Y
A'further object 0f the invention is to provide a novelrim tool formed of a single strip of metal of the desired gauge bent to provide a manipulating handle and the rim engaging portion. A further ob'ect of the invention is to provide a novel combination tool of the above character which can haveformed on the opposite ends thereof tools of different types for straightening clincher and straight sided CII rims or which can have formed on one end l thereof a rigid'jaw wrench for manipulating rim nuts' or other parts of an automobile such as spark plugs and the like.y
A still further object of the invention is to provide an improved rim tool of the above character, which will be durable-and eflicient in use. one that will be simple and easy to manufacture land one which can be placed upon the market `at a small cost.
v With these and other objects in view,' the` invention consists in the novel construction,`
arrangement and formation of parts as' will be hereinafter `more specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompany` Y ing drawings, in which drawings,
Figure l is a perspective view of thek improved rim tool,
. Figure 2y s a side elevation ofthe tool showing the same used for straightening` the rims for the type employed for straight sided tires` f i v Figure 3 is .an 'edge elevation of the tool showing the same in use for straightening the flanges of clincher rims one end of the tool being shown provided with a rigid j aw wrench, f' Y Figure 4 is a detail view showing the rigid jaw wrench formed on one end of the tool.' y y vthe drawing and is indicated by the refer Referring to the drawings in details,
wherein similar referencelcharacters desig Vvnate corresponding parts throughout lthe several views, the letter A vgenerally indicates the improved rim tool, which is preferably formed from forged tool steel and as shown the saine includes a flat elongated shank or handle 5 having the head B formed on one other end thereof `for vstraighte'nii'ig flanges of clincherrimsyend thereoflfor engagingfand -lstrai' 'htening' Y straight sidedv rims and thehead 1 "onthe .If s'okdesired as shownJin-FiguresBfand 4*' of the drawing the tool vcan-be'. provided vat one end with either the head Bor C andatz I yits other end with a rigid jaw wrench D for removing the spark plugs and the like from an automobile. l The wrench D preferably extends at an angle to the shank as "clearly shown in the drawing and forms ahandle for manipulating the tool whenvthe samev is used for straightening a rim.
The head B which is used for straighten-` ing rims'for straight wall tires embodies a hook 6 which extends in the same plane as the shank 5. As shown the hook 6 is formed by bending the shank back upon itself as at 7 and then bending thebar again to form the bill 8 ofthe hook. ln forming the head B the shank 5iis bent slightly to an angle to the main portion of the shank so that'the yhook 6 will extend in parallel relation to the shank.V v if In use of the tool the hook is applied to the straight side, of the rim as shown in i vFigure2 of the drawing in such a manner E85 l thatthe bent portion thereof will be firmly gripped in the bend of vthe hook and by manipulating the shank 5 thereof Vin the desired direction the bent portion of the flange can 'be readily forced back in place. The straight sided rim is indicated bv the reference character E in Figure 2 ofthe drawing and is `of the usual construction provided with the side flanges 9 for engaging the straight walls of aV tire. v Y
The head C hich is utilized for straightening clincher rims comprises a hook 10v which is formed by bending one end of the shank 5 back upon itself as` clearly shown in FiguresV 1' and 3 of the'drawing. The bill of the hookleXtends in parallel relation to the shank 5 and is preferably sharpened In use of the tool for straightening the Arinus of the clinch'er type. the -hook10 of the head C is; placed over the bent portion of the flange of the rim as shown inNFigure 3 ias Aat 11 to facilitate the placing of the hook l .in position. v
. type provided with the inwardly bent flanges y 5 and frestoringflthesame' to a4 normal. State of the draw-inggandxthe toolA islan'oW` used as: a levefor'bringing `the bent' place 'back' in position.
