IMPROVEMENT IN BAG=HOLDERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 161,589, dated April 6, 1875; application filed February 18, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. BUDLONG, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Holders, of which improvements the following is a full, clear, and exact description, which will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the said improvements, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part hereof, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a bagholder embodying my invention, and representing the mannerin which the bag is held; Fig. 2, an end elevation thereof, the bag not being shown; and Fig. 3, a side elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 1 when they are in a position to receive the bag.

In the drawing, Arepresents a hopper, and B is its base. 0 Care legs or supports pivoted to the base. Each legis capable of an independent swinging movement on its pivot, which is parallel to end of the hopper, as shown. a a are projections on the legs. These projections extend beneath the base and operate as jaws in connection with it. e c are metallic points or spurs on the lower ends of the legs.

The person using the holder should stand at one end of the hopper. The jaws, if closed, may be readily opened by pushing apart the lower ends of the legs. This may be done by slightly tipping the device endwise until the spur on one of the legs is raised from the fioor. The released leg may then be kicked or pushed in such a direction as to open the jaws formed by it.

If this leg is now held in this position and the device tipped back until the leg strikes the floor, both jaws will be open. The mouth of thebag should then be arranged in one of the jaws, as shown in Fig. 1, and if the device is then tilted 0r pushed toward this jaw while the corresponding leg rests upon the floor the bag will be seized by the jaw and firmly held. The bag may then also be arranged in the other jaw and the jaw closed by pressing for that purpose on the lower part of the corresponding leg, the device being first tilted, so as to lift the leg slightly from the floor. The be g will then be held open, and may be readily filled. When filled it may be released by pushing apart the lower ends of the legs in the manner described. The points 0 e, by preventing the legs from slipping on the floor, prevent the jaws from being opened accidentally.

I am aware that the legs have heretofore been pivoted to a hopper, and so constructed and arranged as to operate as jaws in connection therewith, for the purpose of holding bags open, but I do not here claim such, broadly; but,

The combination of the horizontal base or open table B and the legs 0 O, pivoted in slots in the said table and provided with the projections at a, arranged to press against the lower side of the table, and with the points or spurs e 6 arranged as shown, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
