THOMAS osIIEA, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
GOLF-SCORING DEVICE.
Application tiled Gctober 13, 1924. Serial No. 743,384.
My invention pertains to a golf score device, and yhas for 1ts chief obgect toproylde Such a device for Conveniently and 1nd1v1dually registering the score for each hole, and' D. for registering the total scores made whlle going out and also the total scores made while coming in; and a further object 1s to arrange such device in suitable shape and size for carrying it in the pocket on the golf bag, or if desired also in a pocket on ones clothes.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.v
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,4
Fig. 1 is a front view of my invention;
Fig. 2 is la rear view thereof;
Fig. 3 is a, side view or edge view thereof;
Fig. 4 is a. sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view taken on line 5--5 of Fig. 4; and
* Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail section taken on line 6-6 at the upper part of Fig. 4.
The device is arranged in a shape and size adapted to be conveniently placed and carriedin the pocket of a golf bag, or if desired; also in a pocket in a persons clothes, and the preferred form of construction as illustrated comprises a flat cylindrical casing of nickel or similar anti-rust material, or may be made of any suitable material, and said casing includes a main part having a rear wall 10 with a cylindrical side wall 11, and a front face or front wall 12 fastened on a ridge 13 provided on side wall 11, by the use -of rivets 14 or the like. lVindow means are provided in said front and rear walls, and these are preferably formed by cutting openings 15 and 16 in said front and rear walls 12 and 10, respectively, and these openings are preferably covered by mounting transparent means thereunderwhich means preferably consists of transparent sheets orplates 17 and 18 of any suitable material mounted on the inner sides of thefront and rear plates to cover said openings 15 and 16 and also to cover the totalizing openings or windows 19 and 2O rovided in the middle portion of the front ace plate 12.
A cylindrical frame member 21 is spaced concentrically from the cylindrical wall 11 andhas an annular fiange 21 with which it is fastened to the rear wall 10 inward of the transparent sheet 18 as by means of rivets 22 or the like. `Shafts 23 extend u wardly from flange 21 and a pair of whee 24 are mounted on each of said shafts and have notches on their periphery extending through slots 25 in the side wall `11 of the casing. Consecutive numbers, preferably from 1 to 12, are placed on the outward side or face of each of said wheels in position t0 be registerable through windows 15-and 16. Spring arms 26 are fastened 0n the cylindrical member 21 and are provided with' rollers 27 for engaging in the notches on wheels 24 to hold said wheels in position, and side flanges 28 are formed on said arms to vpositively retain said rollers and said wheels in proper cooperative engagement.
The window means 15 on the face or front 12 of the casing are preferably numbered consecutively from 1 to 9, as shown in Fi 1, while the window means 16 on the bac 10 of said casing are preferably numbered consecutively from -10 to 18, one for successively1 registering the score o) strokes of the holes going out and the other the score otthe holes coming in.I Annular ridges 11 are preferably formed around the cylindrical wall 11 and project beyond the notched Wheels 24 for protecting the same, and also to prevent the finger from simultaneously engaging and moving both wheels of a pair when it' is desired to move only one thereof.
I also provide means for separately registering the totals of the scores going out .and coming in and as indicated on the front and rear sides ol the casing in Figs. 1 and 2. This totalizng means preferably comprises a pair. of shafts 30 mounted parallel in the cylindrical ftmge 21 and a pair of sleeves 31 on each of said shafts, a wheel 32 with consecutive numbers on its periphery being mounted on the inner end of each of said sleeves, and a notched wheel 33 being mounted on the outer end of each of said sleeves and extending outward through a slot 34 in the front plate 12 of the casing adapted to be engaged by the finger to rotate said numbered wheels 32 for registering the desired numbers under windows 19 and 20, as indicated in Fig. 1, to show the totals of the scores going out and coming in. The word Out is preferably placed over the upper window and the word In? over the lower window 20, as indicated. Spring arms 35 are fastened in the rear of the casing as with fastening elements 36, and rollers 37 are mounted on said arms to engage the notches in wheels 33, side flan es 38 being also rovided on saidarms or retaining the ro 1ers 37 in operative position upon the notches of said wheels 33.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A score device comprising a cylindrical casing, a cylindrical member with a radially extending flange spaced inward from thev peripheral Wall of said casing and fastened wlth its ilange against one end of said casmg, Window o eninns rovided on an end face around said cylin rical member, indicatlng means mounted in said casing and having numbers registrable through said windows and means for actuating said indicatlnv means.
2. In a device of the class described, a casing, a wheel rotatably vmounted in said casing and provided with a notched periphery, a Window opening in said casing, a series of numbers adapted to be brou ht into registry with said window by sai wheel, spring pressed means engaging said notched periphery to hold said wheel in position and flanges on the last said means for holding said means in engagement with said notched periphery, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
