Description

(H0 Model.)
E. G. MlTTs. REVOLVING HAND STAMP.
No. 566,525. Patented Aug. 25, 1 96.
UNITED STATES ATENT Fries.
EDWVARD G. MITTS, OF SHAIVNEETOIVN, ILLINOIS.
REVOLVING HAND-STAM P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 566,525, dated August 25, 1896.
Application filed May 2'7, 1896. Serial No. 593,335. (No model.)
IO the art to which it appcrtains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to hand-stamps for office or pocket use, and the object is to provide a simple, cheap, and convenient de vice of this kind for the use of postmasters,
merchants, and the like; and to this end the novelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings the same letters of reference refer to the same parts of the invention.
, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved revolving hand-stamp as it appears closed. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the cap or cover removed and ready for use. Fig. 3 is a side view with the front side removed. Fig. 4 is a view of the rotating polygonal plate removed from the casing. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the rosettes removed from the plate, and Fig. 6 is a transverse vertical section of the stamp with the cover removed.
A is a light wooden plate having equidistant hexagonal sides B, though, of course, any number of polygonal sides can be used. This plate is slightly thicker in the center than at its edges, so as to allow it to revolve freely in the casing O, which may be stamped up or otherwise constructed of any sheet materialsuch as metal, rubber, or celluloidand a portion of its perimeter is cut away on a line corresponding to one of the polygonal faces of the plate A, and through which the rubber face of the type-line D projects.
E is the cover, and it corresponds in size and shape to the cut-away portion of the easing, and is intended to fit over it and protect so the stamp when it is carried in the pocket or not in use.
In the bottom of the inside of the cover E is secured the ink-pad F, and c e are small ears on the outer ends of the cover, which engage with corresponding ribs 0 c on the easing to hold the latter in place.
G G are rosettes consisting of stamped metal disks of any suitable configuration or ornamentation, and they are provided with integral spurs g, which are bent inward and, when pressed into the plate, secure the disks in place. These disks project on each side of the casing 0, through central orifices II, and act as handles by means of which the plate carrying the type may be rotated to change the face of the stamp.
The case being held in the left hand, the thumb and finger of the right hand grasping the rosettes, the plate can be revolved to present any side of the polygonal plate to view without soiling the fingers.
A slot 1, in the front side of the casing, shows what particular word is projected through the cut-away portion. of the case, and by this means any particular line of type can be brought to the proper position for use, as the word or line corresponding to that on one face is secured on the side of the plate immediately in line with the visual slot I.
The type may be cast on a continuous rubher band and secured to the plate, or the lines or words may be cast separate and attached by cementing in the usual manner.
In the case of postmasters, the words commonly in use, such Forwarded, Held for postage, Unclaimed, Advertised, 85c. may be used.
The device is so simple and convenient as to be readily understood without further description.
Although I have specifically described the construction and relative arrangement of the several elements of my invention, I do not desire to be confined to the same, as such changes or modifications may be made as clearly fall within the scope of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. As a new article of manufacture, a polygonal plate rotating in a cylindrical or circular casing having a portion of its periphery IOD cut away to allow the type on one of the polygonal sides to project through the casing, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. As a new article of manufacture, ahandstamp, consisting of a casing having a visual slot and a cut-away portion for the type to project, and provided with a rotating plate mounted therein and having its polygonal sides provided with figures, letters or characters, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The hand-stamp, comprising a casing having central orifices, a visual slot, and a cut-away portion, and a polygonal plate. centrally mounted in said orifices, and adapted to rotate therein so that its polygonal sides can be alternately projected through the cutaway portion of the casing, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. A hand-stamp, comprising a polygonal plate provided with rosettes which project through the central orifices in the casing, a portion of the periphery of which is also cut away to expose the face of the polygonal plate, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. A hand-stamp, comprising a revolving plate, the polygonal sides of which are provided with a printingsurface, and having one of its faces immediately above each side provided with characters corresponding to the face of the printing-surface, and a casing for containing said revolving plate and provided with a cut-away portion for the printing-surface to project through, and a visual opening for the characters on the face of said plate, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
6. A hand-stamp, comprising a rotating plate containing printing-characters on its polygonal sides, and a casing provided with a cut-away portion, and external ribs, in combination with a removable cover formed with ears to engage said ribs and hold the cover in place when the stamp is not in use, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDlV. G. HITTS.
