. WILLIAM ERASTUS WILLIAMS, OF WILMETTE, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN STEEL FOUNDRIES, F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
AUTOMOBILE WHEEL WITH`DEMOUNTABLE RIM.
Application filed October 19, 1922. Serial No. 595,592.
To all whom it may concern: l
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM Ennsrt's IViLLIAMs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Tilme-tte, county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Automobile vhcels with Demountzil'ile Rims, ot' which the following is a. Specication.
The object of my invention is to nia-ke' a demountable rim disc `wheelthat will be the cheapest and best for use with a quick detachable rim for a pneumatic tire.
Reference will be had to the accompanying drawings on which Figure .1 is an elevat-ion of a part of a wheel.
Figure 2 is a section on line 2 2 of Figure l.
Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Figure 1. Y
FigureV 4 is al sectional elevation on line 4 4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a front elevation of a part of the side ring of the rim. i
Figure 6 is a transverse section of the side ring on line 6-6 of Figure 5, sho-wing the locating pin of the side ring.
Figure 7 -is' a section on the line 7-7,
Figure 1.
In the drawings 1 indicates the inner flange of a quick detachable tire rim 2. This rim 2 has a flange 3 which ferns the side of the gutter 4 into which is `retained the snap side ring 5 of a quick detachable pneumatic tire rim.
The web of the wheel is formed of a disc 6, the portion below the line 7 not being shown, but the dise 'may be curved in any desirable shape from its junction with the rim to the hub, crossing or not crossing .the medial line as may be desired by the wheel builder.
The disc 6 is turned over at its margin into Contact with an inclined portion 9 which forms one wall of the gutter 4 of the rim 2. The flange 8 of thedisc ismerged over into a horizontal'flange 10 for the purpose of stifi'ening the margin of the disc.`
' The udetachable side ring 5 is split as shown at 11 in Figure 1 in order to permit it to be sprung into and out of engagement with the gutter 4 of the rim 2. The ring 5 is positioned always in the same place on the rim 2 by a fixed pin 12 which engages a hole 13 in wall 9 of the gutter 4, see Figure 6.
The rim is apertured at 14 and counter- Ato the flange` 8 of the disc.
bored at 15 at intervals. To accommodate the fastening screws 16 which pass through the gutter portion of the ring 5, flange 3 and wall 9 of the rim Q, the flange 3 and wall 9 are pierced for the passage; ot these bolts 1G. The flange 3 is counterbored at its upper corner 17 below the dotted lines of' Figure VG to co-act with the couuterbore 15 of the ring 5 to furnish the seat for the head of the screw 16. A
The screws 16 screw -into fixed nuts 18 having small -fianges 19 secured by rivets 20 To better accommodate the xed nuts 18, the flange 10 of the disc is wanting at the immediate location of the nuts 18.
The construction I have Ashown permits the use of a. standard quick detachable rim to be mounted on a disc without any additional fastening outside of the screws or bolts, and thus saves the weight of those features of mounting.
The fastening is desirable and is used on many wheels not of the disk type.
1. In a devicel of the class described, a] disc forming a main web of the wheel and having its outer margin turned over into a flange inclined at an angle to the medial plane of the wheel and supporting on this 85 fiange a.. pneumaticitire rim using the inclined wall of the snap ring gutter of the rim as a seat, and a plurality of bolts passing through the snap ring and the gutter of' the rim and into lugs fastened nto the rear `face of the inclined margin of the disc.
Q. The combination with a pneumatic-tire rim having nea-r one side of the tire seat a marginal gutter provided with aseries of perforations, of a detachable side ring held in the gutter and having a seriesI of perforations registering with those of theflatter, a wheel body ha` ing an inclined peripheral flange fitting and detachably secured to the rear face of the gutter wall, lugs carried by` i' the rear side of said fange, and bolts se'- curing together the gutter, side ring, and 1ugs;` whereby the rim and tire form a unit detachable from the body.
3. In a device ofthe class described, a wheel body adapted to carry a demountable rina of the quick detachable type having a detachable snap ring as a detachable flange held in the main rim portion by means of a gutter, and a series of bolts passing through .main rim portion bymeans of a gutter;v a
series of bolts passing through the side ring and the gutter and adapted to secure the rim tothe margin of the Wheel, the said side flange and a.v portion of the'main rim pierced and counterbored for seating said bolts.
5. lnI a device of the class described a main 'rlm body havmgea gutter. on one edge adapted to sustain in place a detachable snap ring, a series of perforations inthe said snapring and the said gutter adapted to permit of the 'passage therethru-'ot a maarre series of bolts for cla-mpingthe assembled rim to the margin of the Wheel.
6. ln a'device of the class described, a disc` forming the Web of the Wheel and provided with an inclined flange on its margin adapted to' carry on said flange a demountable rim, a series of bolts passing through a Jortion of the rim and throu h the said inclined margin of the disc stiffened betweenthe said bolts by a marginal flange substantially parallel With the tread of the rim.
Signed at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of llllino'is, this 16th day of .October, 1922. Y
