IMPRGVEWIENT IN BILLFILES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 161,4l 5, dated March 30, 1875; application tiled January 23, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS HUTcnrNsoN, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bill-Files; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a front view of a package-band embodying my said invention. Fig. 2 is a back view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal central section taken on the line fc x, drawn through Fig. 2.

My invention relates to that class of package-bands used to secure packages of money, papers, and other similar articles; and its object is to provide an elastic band which will adapt itself to the size of the package, and at the same time provide a plain surface on which the amount or file of the package may be written. To that end it consists in a band constructed of a tablet of tracing cloth or paper, having its ends united to the ends of an elastic oord, so as to encircle the package around which it is placed, as will be more fully understood by the following description:
In the drawing, A represents the upper portion ofthe band, which consists of a tablet of tracing-cloth, or any suitably tough paper, on which the amount contained in the package or the le of the package can be written. This tablet is usually about one inch in width, and
its length is equal to about two-thirds the circumference of the package around which it is to be placed. The sides of this tablet, at its ends, are made narrower than the main or central portion of the same, as shown in Fig. 2. B is a narrow strip of india-rubber, or an elastic cord, which is permanently secured at its ends to the ends of the tablet A, by means of sheet-metal clasps d d, which pass around the same, the ends of the cord and tablet A lapping one upon the other to admit of the same.
By attaching the ends of the tablet to the ends of the elastic cord by means of the clasps, the upper surface of the tablet is left smooth and unobstructed, as would not be the case if the tablet was secured to the outer surface of the ordinary elastic band.
It is readily seen that this combination of the tablet and elastic cord comprises all the utility and convenience of the ordinary rubber band, while at the same time it provides a surface on which the file of the package may be Written.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- As a new article of manufacture, a bill-file consisting of the tablet A and elastic cord B, each end of the cord and tablet being united one to the other by the clasps d d, substantially in the manner specified.
