TYPEWRITING MACHINE.
Application filed May 16,
The present invention relates to devices for attaching typewriting machines to the desks or work tables on which the same are used; and, more particularly, to a typewriter equipment including devices for detachably securing portable typewriting machines to work tables such as drop-leaves of desks or the like. V
A feature of the present invention is the provision of a portable typewriting machinecasing having, as one wall thereof, a board or piece to which the base of the machine is held; together with hold-fast means, on a work table, such as a drop-leaf or table-platform, directly engageable with such baseboard or casing-piece (when the casing is open), to hold the baseboardand connected machine. f
A further feature ofthe invention is the provision of a work table-connection, as aforesaid, for a typewriting machine, comprising a casing-piece; avhich connection may be rendered effective and may be re leased, upon simple looking or unlocking and movement of the casing-niece upon the table.
A still further feature of the invention is a lock controlled by a finger-piece for holdingthe casingpiece in position within the hold-fast means on the work table or dropleaf.
Other features and advantages will hereinafter appear.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a view, in side elevation, showing the machine secured to a work table.
Figure 2 is a view, in front elevation, of the structure shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the casing wall to which the typewriter is attached and of the hold-fast devices on the work table, by means of which the machine is held and locked in position.
Figure 4 is a view, in cross-sectional side elevation, showing the manner in which the board, to which the machine is directly secured, forms part of the casing of the machine.
The machine is indicated in dot-and-dash lines by its main frame 10, its keys 11, platen l2 and ribbon-spools 13. The frame is connected to a base 14, forming one wall of the casing therefor. In addition to the base 14, the casing comprises a cover 15. When the cover is positioned over the machine and locked to the base 14, an enclosed cas- 1922. Serial NO. 561,297.
ing is formed, in which the machine may be carried from place to place. The machine intended to be illustratedin the drawings is the Underwood 'portable. standard typewriting machine, which is;secured to the base or casing-piece 14 by means of inturned flanges 16 extending along-the sides of the frame 10, connected by acrosspiece 17. In positioningthe machine 10 on the casin -piece 14, the flanges 16 are slipped under a pair of clamps 18 onlthe rear. of the casing-piece 14, and thereafter screws 18 are passed through theflanges 16 and into the casing-piece 14 to hold the machine against displacement on the casing-piece 14'; resilient feet'or cushions usually being interposed between the flanges 16'and base or casing-piece 14 so that, when the casingcover 15 isremoved the machine and casing-piece 14 are movable as a'unit. 1
Referring to Figure 2, it will be notedthat the casing-piece 14 projects laterally beyond the sides of the frame 10 ofthe machine, to form, in effect, a flange or ledge extending along the machineeframe at each side there? of; and that the outer rim 27 of the casingpiece 14 extends upwardly an appreciable distance above the upper or inner surface 28 of the casing-piece 14. Extending from front to rear on a table-platform or, dropleaf 19 are hold-fast devices including two elongated angle-irons 20, secured to the work table or drop-leaf by screws 21. These angle-irons 20 are preferably formed from a blank and bent or offsetlaterally toward each other, at their upper edges, forming lips 22 cO-operative with the top surface of the work table to produce channels in which the casing-piece rim 27 may be received, and by means of which the casing piece 14 may be held down to the drop-leaf or platform. At their rear ends, the angle-pieces 20 having integral offsets or ears 23 directed toward one another, which serve as permanent stops to arrest and hold the casing-piece 100 14' at its rear, when the casing-piece shall have been received in the channels formed by the angle-pieces.
The lower or outer surface 29 of the casing-piece 14 is provided with Outer feet 30, one preferably adjacent to each corner thereof, preferably formed of suitable resilient material such as'rubber. These feet rest upon the work table 19.
In the drop-leaf or table, at the front thereof, is formed arecess' 2d adapted to receive a pin or peg 25, having a knurled finger-piece 26, by means of which it may be inse1ted;into-,=. and removed from, the recess 24. After; the-.casingpiece. l4 of the machine has been slid into the position, under the oiisets 22, and brought to rest by the stops 2-3, the peg 25 is inserted in the recess 24 and serves as a lock to prevent forward displacement of the casing-piece ot the machine. Upon withdrawal of the peg 25, however, thecasing piece may he slid forward to remove the machine from the table.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
Having thus described my invention, it claim:
1; A type-writer equipment comprising in combination a work table, a base-piece upon which the hood of aportable typewriter is adapted" to be mounted, a portable typewriter detaehably attached to said base piece and'means on the work table to secure the base piece, said means including a hold fast at each of two opposite sides of said worktable engageable with respective opp'osi-te sides of said base piece, a-stop at the rear of saidwork table engage-able with the rear of said' base piece, and a torward locking member on saidwork table engageable with the front of said base piece, all positively holding the typewriter and attached ba'se pieee in position on the work table.
'2. A typewriter equipment comprising in combination a work table, a base piece upon which the hood of a portable typewriter is adapted to be mounted, aportable typewriter: detachably attached to said base piec and means onthe work table to secure the said base piece thereto, said means including a holdtfast at each of two opposite sides of said-work table engageable with respect to opposite sides'of said base-piece, each of said holdfasts comprising a unitary elongated angular body secured to said work table andhaving aninwardly projecting upper lip-to hold the base piece down onto the work-table and an inwardly bent offset rearward portion affordinga limiting stop at tlie'rear o-t-saidwork table engageable with therearof said base piece and a forward locking pin on said work table enga'geable with the front of said base piece all positively holding the typewriter and attached base piece down in position on the work table.
3. A typewriter equipment comprising in co 'glblliatlOll a work. table, a base-piece upon which the hood of a portable typewriter is adapted to be mounted, a portable typewriter detachably attached to said basepiece, and means on the work table to secure the base piece thereon, said means including a holdi ast at each of two opposite sides of said work table engagea-bl'e with respective opposite sides of said base-piece, each ofsaid holdtasts comprising aunitary elongated an 'uiar body securable to said work-table, having an inwardly projecting upper lip to hold the casing base-piece onto the work table, and an inwardly bent offset rearward portion affording a limiting stop at the rear of said work table engageable with the rear 01' said base-piece, and a forward locking member on said work table engagea-ble with the trout of said base-piece all positively holding the typewriter and attached piece down in position on the work table, said forward locking member comprisin a stop pin removably insertible ina hole formed in said work table, and said casing and base-piece having a plurality of feet resting on said work table.
4-. Ir typewriter equipment comprising in combination a work table, a base-piece upon which the hood of a portable typewriter is adapted to be mounted, a portabletype writer detachabl-y attached to said basepiece and holdtast means for removably anchoring the base-piece to a work table or the like while the typewriter iachine remains attached to the basepiece, including aplurality of elongated unitary angle pieces secuiable to the work table and under which the edges of the base-piece ot' the typewriter may be held to prevent the rising 0t the base-piece and attached machine from the work table and to hold the same against lateral movement, said angle nieces having integral oii sets orears on the ends thereof to locate the position of the base-piece and attached machine upon the table, and means setable on the work table against the front side of the base-piece to hold the base-piece and attached machine in located position.v
