TYPEWRrrING MAHTNE.
-.application mea December 11, 1924. seriai No. 755,136.
lhis invention relates to a sound-(loadening device for typewriting machines, and is in the nature of a structure formed by plates or walls lined with a sound-deadcning material and closing the bottom, rear and side openings of a typewriting machi11e,'to pack the same against sound.
The invention discloses an improvement (in the method of attaching the walls to the machine.
The plates or walls are lformed so as to permit them to be attached and detached v with little or no change in the machine.
Other features and-advantages will herey inafter appear.'
1n the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a Jliront elevation showing my invention attached to an Underwood standard typewriting machine, with parts broken away.
Figure 2 chine, showing applied thereto, some broken away.
Figure 3 is a perspective view showing the sound-deadening pack detached from the .machine and its vertical plates separated from the base-plate.
The Underwood standard typewriting machine comprises a platen 10 mounted in the platen-frame 11, which is supported by a carriage 12 arranged for movement`transversely of thev machine by means including a rear rail 13 mounted on the frame 14 of the typewriting machine. The frame 14 of the typewriting machine has side openings 15 and a bottom and back opening, not shown, and comprises front posts 16, rear posts 17 and aforward or keyboard eXtension 18. The usual Jiront plate 19 is at tached by means of screws 2O to the front posts 16, and is' provided with a lining 21 of suitable sound-deadening material.
To close the openings there are used a bottom' plate 22, two side walls `23 and a rear wall 24, all being lined with a layer of sound-deadening material 25.
They base-plate 22 is provided with two side anges ange 28. The side anges 26and the rear flange 27 are bent upwardly and at right is a side elevation of the mathe sound-deadenng pack of the parts being angles to the plate. In order to rigidly 'attach the plate 22 to the machine, its lining is provided with cutouts- 29 intol by the side anges'26 of the bottom/plate 22 screws 44 of the case-shift mechanism. This 26, a'rear flange 27 and a .front the case-shift framein position, the screws which the.
lower portions of the posts 16 and 17 may fit. Screws 3() of the rubber feet 31 used in the Underwood machine may pass through holes 32 provided in the plate 22 and be screwed into the openings 33 of the posts 16 and 17 of the machine Iframe 14. The bottom plate 22 will be held fast and over the bottom opening of the machine by the'four rubber feet 31 which screw up into the base.
The two side walls 23, which are of'similar construction, are provided at their upper ends withv inwardly-extending iianges 34 bent at right angles to the walls 23 and having holes 35 therein. These walls cover up the side openings 15 of the machine and are attached thereto by means of the two side flanges 26 of the base-plate 22 and screws 36 of brackets 37 of the ribbon mechanism 38. This is accomplished by inserting their bottom edges into slots 39 formed and the main frame 14 of the machine. The anges 26 will hold the bottom edges of walls 23 tightly against the machine -frame 14. The flanges 34 ofthe walls\23 are then` inserted between the brackets 37 and the main frame 14, so that the holes35 of the ianges 34 will coincide with holes 40'in the brackets 37. Screws 41 which `normally hold-the brackets 37 tothe frame 14 will then pass through holes 40 and 35 and into the main frame 14, thereby holding both thebrackets 37 and the langes 34 fast to the frame 14. In this manner the side walls 23 will be held tightly against the machine frame 14.
The rear wall 24 covers up the back opening of the machine frame 14-and is attached thereto by means of the {iange 27 of the base-plate 22 and screws 43 threaded into is accomplished by inserting the bottom edge` of the rear wall 24 into a slot 42 formed by the rear flange, 27 of the base-plate 22 and the main frame 14, the flange 27 holdinghthe bottom edge of the rear wall 24 tig tly the machine, and its upper end is means of the screws'43 passing provided in the wall against secured by throu h openings 45 24 an 44 having been tapped yso as to receive the 4screws 43.
into the screws 44 used for holding r 10u 24 form a box-like structure which substantially encloses all the lower portion of the machine,l which will efficiently `deaden a large percentage of the operating noise.
Provision is made for operating the usual ribbon-feeding mechanism from the outside of the walls by means of a hole 46 in one of the side walls 23 to permit a knurled head Aor finger-wheel 47 to be fastened to a short shaft 48 of the ribbon-feeding mechanism.
Variations may be resorted to Within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used wit-hout others.
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
1. The combination with `a typewriting machine comprising a main frame, of a sound-deadening pack, comprising a baseplate flctaf-hably secured to the bottom of said main frame, two side walls, a rear wall, all of said walls interlocking at their lower ends with the base-plate, and means for detachably securing said walls at their upper ends to said main frame.
2. The combination with a typewriting machine com rising a main frame, of a sound-deadenmg pack including a base-plate detachably secured to the bottom ot said main frame, two side walls and a rear wall, said base-plate having flanges within `which said walls may engage at their lower ends to interlock with the base-plate, and means to secure the walls at their' upper ends to the main frame.
3. The combination with a typewriting machine comprising a main frame, of a sound-deadening pack including a pan-like base-plate having upturned flanges, said base-plate being detachably secured to the bottom of said main frame, two side walls, a rear wall, all of said walls to engage the inner sides of said flanges, and means to seeure said walls at their upper ends to the main frame. i p

5. The combination with a typewriting machine comprising a main frame, of a sound-deadening pack, comprising a baseplate secured to the bottom of said main frame. two side walls, a rear wall, all of said walls interlocking at their lower ends with the base-plate, each of. said walls and said base-plate being lined with a layer of felt, and means to Secure said walls at their upper ends to said main frame.
(i. The combination with a typewriting machine comprising a main frame, of a sound-deadening pack comprising a metallic hase-plate secured to the bottom of said main frame, two metallic side walls, a metallic rear wall, each of said walls and said base-plate being lined with felt, all of said walls interlocking at their lower ends with the base-plate, and means to secure said' walls at their upper ends to said main frame.
g, 7. The combination with a typewriting machine including a main frame having front and rear posts and detachable feet for said posts, of a bottom plate interposed be- 'tween the front and rear posts and the detachable feet, said plate having cut-out portions for the reception of said front and rear posts, the detachable feet rigidly securing the bottom plate to the main frame. S. The combination with a .typewriting machine including a main frame having front and rear posts and detachable feet for said posts, of a bottom plate interposed between the front and rear posts and the detachable feet, said plate having cut-out portions for the reception of said front and rear posts, the detachable feet rigidly securing the-bottom plate to the mainframe, the bottom plate having upturned flanges, and two side walls and a rear wall fitting closely against the Asides and rear of the main frame and held rigidly in position at the bottom by the upt-urned flanges of the bottom plate, the upper edges of the side walls having inwardly-extending flanges and means for securing said flanges to the main frame.
