This invention relates to means for facilitating the operation of a line-'spacing mechanism of a typeiwriting machine in a Sound- `deadening casing, with the line-spacing 5 mechanism readily operable from the eX- terior of the casing.
In the Underwood portable typewriting `machine, the line-spacing mechanism is mounted at the rear part of the machine, so that when the machine is placed in a sounddeadening casing the line-spacing mechanism is much nearer the top and rear than the front of thecasing. A feature of the present invention relates to the Aprovision of a line-space lever extending through the top of the casing, and so mounted on the carriage that it Vwill readily operate the line-spacing mechanism, the lever being attachable to or detachable from the carriage when the latter is used with or without a sound-deadening casing.
Another feature of the invention is the provision of a bracket attached to the carriage and upon which the line-space lever is 25 pivoted,`there being no` changes necessary on the carriage for attaching the bracket and the line-space lever thereto. Means is provided on the bracket to co-operate with means on the line-space lever for limiting and steadying the movement of the latter. The means may comprise an outwardly-extending` arm on the bracket having shoulders for engagement with a pin on the line- Space lever thereby -determining the throw of the lever.

Figure 3 is a view, in side elevation, taken divided longitudinally by a plate 11, which extendsy from one `to the other of the` side walls 12 of the casing. The plate 11 iso'- set at its lower edge to form a fiange13,y through which are passed wood screws `14, securing the plate to the base 15 of the bodypart of the casing. The -plate 11 may be further braced by meansof a strip 16 eX- ten-ding longitudinally thereof on the base 15. A similar strip 17 may be extended from side to side of the body-part, yat` the forward edge thereof, where thecover engages the base. The plate 11together with the rear wall 18of the part 10, andthe side walls of the latter, forms an interior lchamber adapted to receive the main frame 19 and thecarriage 20 of a typewriting ma# chine. The keyboard-extension. 21 ofthe machine protrudes through, and forward of, the plate 11, so that thekeyboard may be accessible when the outer cover (not shown) is removed. This interior chamber has the rear wall thereof lined with' sound-deadening material 22; the side walls thereof with sound-dea-dening material 23; thebase thereof with sound-deadening material 24; and the front thereof with sound-deadening material 25, which latter is suitably secured to the plate 11. This interior chamber is also provided with a cover 26, adapted to be swung up from its normal position, in which position access may be had to the machine, for erasures and the like.
For centering and holding the machine to the casing `base 15, the rear feet 27 ofthe machine are moved into brackets 28 and the front feet 29 into disks 30. The front of the machine is locked against upward movement by a plate 3l, secured to the upper edge of the plate 11, andy which crosses over, and fits down upon, the front plate 32 of the machine. This plate 31 is provided with a sound-deadening lining 33 and forms an upward continuation yof the front `wall .of the interior chamber to the lower front edgeV fouling ot the paper, in the machine, on the lining 3d as the carriage is nioved in lettereed and return directions.
The lower edges ol' the side lining-ineinbers 36 of the cover are `held by strips ln the front ot the cover is a window, through which the witing on the platen may be observed. L window-pane or' glass or other transparent inaterial, is set into a traine provided therefor in the coverln the drawings, the pane is shown as comprising superposedsheets of glass 38 and 39. At the lower end et the window is a cushion 40,' which rests upon an offset il on the upper edge of the removable iront plate 3l, when the cover is in norinal position.r
Since the machine is to be operated in the sound-proof inner casing, and since the side walls l2 of the casing-part l() forni also the side walls oft the interior sound-prooi chainber, the length of the several parts of the casing must be such as toallow for full movement of the carriage in letter-feed and return directions onthe machine. Secured to the carriage, however, are various operating levers and arms which should be accessible from the outside ot the sound-prooi' chamber. @ne of these levers comprises a line-space lever 42 (and is the only one t yshown in the drawings). lt these levers ar to project-to the outside et the sound-prooi chamber, the llatter inust be slotted to perniit them to travel therealonp; with the carriage.' Such a slot is shown at i3 in the cover at the rear of the window-pane. Resilient cushions del are provided which come together to close the slot, except at the points wberethe levers protrude therethrough.
The line-space mechanism in the Underwood standard portable typewriter consists of a. ratchet-wheel 45, tast on the shaft fl of the platen ll?. A pawl 48, for actua-ting the ratchet-wheel, is mounted on a slide 49, connected to one arm 50 ot a bell-crank-lever, pivoted at 5l on the carriage-traine. The other arin 52 of the bell-crank lever projects forward and termina-tes in a iinger-piece within the interior sound-prooi' chamber. This finger-piece is adapted to be engaged and operated by the lever e2, which projects through the-slot i3 to the outside of the cover. The lever 4t2 is pivoted at 54C to an ear 5, forming part of a bracket 55. Siniilarly, at the rear of the bracket-extension 59, another headed screw 6l is threaded into the saine, alongside the lower rear edge or the carriage side piece, and in such position that, when the screw 5l is tightened, the head thereof will overlie, and bear against, the side plate ot the carriage, thereby furnishing` an additional anchor for the bracket 56 at the rear of the platen. l. ln a typewriting machine, a platen, a platen-carriage having side plates beyond the ends of the platen, line-space mechanism vcomprising ratchet-wheel, a pawl for engagement with the ratcliet-whcel, a lever for actuating` the pawl, engage and operate the first lever and to protrude through a slot in a sound-deadening casing for the machine, and a bracket on which the second lever is pivoted; the

2. ln a typewriting machine, a platen, a platen-carriage having side plates beyond the ends of the platen, line-spacemechanism comprising a ratchet-wheel, a pawl for engagement with the ratchet-wheel, a lever for actuating the pawl, another lever adapted to engage and operate the first lever and to protrude through a slot in a sound-deadening casing for the machine, a bracket on which the second lever is pivoted, and means exclusively confined to the bracket for attaching the bracket to the side plate of the carriage.

In a typewriting machine, a platen, a platen-carriage havingv side plates beyond the ends of the platen, line-space mechanism comprising` a ratchet-wheel, a pawl for engagementwith the ratchet-wheel, aleverV for actuating the pawl,fanother lever adapted to engage and operate the first lever and to protrude through a slot in a sound-deadening casing for the machine, a bracket on which the second lever is pivoted, means eX- clusively confined to the bracket for attach-` ing the bracket to the side plate of the carriage. such attaching means consisting of an offsetl or hook on the bracket adapted to be hung on the carriage side plate, and headed screws adapted tov overlie-and when tightened to engage the face of the carriage side plate, respectively at the front and rear edges thereof, one of the screws engaging the carriage side plate on the right-hand side thereof and the other of the screws-engaging the carriage side plate on the left-hand side thereof.

In a typewriting machine, a platen, a platen-carriage having side plates beyond the ends of the platen, line-space mechanism comprising a ratchet-wheel, a pawl for engagement with the ratchet-wheel, a lever for actuating the pawl, anotherlever adapted to engage and operate the first lever and to protrude vertically upward through a slot in the top of a sound-proof casing for the ma-v a smindfdeadening`v casing for the machine, a bracket on which chine, and a bracket on which the second lever is pivoted; the bracket being` attachable to theside plate of the carriage and hav ingfaportion parallel to the axis of the platen, and the Second lever having a headed pin thereon adapted, when the lever is actuated, to ride upon the edge'oiI such portion of the bracket, with the bracket between the lever and the head of the pin, whereby the lever is keteadied against forward and rearward angular displacement.
