' Be it known that 1, JOHN i VALDHEIM, a citizen of the United. States, residing in Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting Machines, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to sound-deadening devices for typewriting machines. The invention is. of the same general type as that disclosed in my co-pending applications,
Serial No. 423,848, filed November 13, 1920 (now Patent No. 1,499,709, dated July 1,
1924:), and Serial No. 466,820, ,filedMay 4, 1921 (now Patent No. 1,519,645, dated 7 December 16, 1924), and comprises a sounddeadening casing or hood for. enclosing the noise-producing parts of a typewriting machine, while the keys and other parts of the machine usedin its operation project from the casing or hood.
A feature of the device is the provision of a casing which may be. readily attached to or detached from the machine. For this purpose, the casing comprises a cover hingedto a body part at the rear thereof, the latter having a front wall which providesa large opening into'which the machine may be conveniently inserted, and hinged members or sections on the front wall which may be swung to close that part of the front opening not occupied by the machine.
A further feature of this invention is the provision of locking means for said hinged members. i The hinged members are also provided with abutments for cont-acting with the posts of the typewriter frame to aid in holding the machine within the casing. m
A further feature of the invention is the provision of a body part which terminates considerably below the lower surface of the platen, so that, when the cover part is swung upwardly, the platen-rotating mechanism and other parts associated with the platen will be readily accessible.
Various operating levers, such as the line space handle, the carriage-return fingerpiece, and the carriage release lever, project forwardly from the typewriter carriage,
and, since the body part/of the casing terminates considerably below the platen, which is mounted in the carriage, these levers procomprising brackets fixed to the casing adjacent the base thereofand provided with openings large enough to receive the feet of the typewriting machine.
The typewriter is located accurately by means of both front and rear locators. The front locators, whichare on the front wall of the hood, engage the front side posts of the typewriter framework, while said rear locators are preferably in the nature of sockets, into which the feet of the typewriting machine are inserted. If it be desired, the hood may be lifted together with the confined typewriting machine. The hands may be placed under the eXtensionsof the hood or casing to lift the same, and the rear part of the typewriting machine will be raised by means of said sockets, which extend beneath the typewriter base; while the front part of the typewriter will be lifted by means of a horizontal bar, which extends from side to sideof the casing at the front thereof and beneath the front or keyboard portion of the base of the typewriter.

The Underwood Standard typewriting machine comprises a main frame 10, and a forward extension 11 of said main frame in which are positioned banks of keys 12,
which,' when depressed, operate key-levers 13 to swing t pe-bars 14 upwardly and rearwardly against a platen 1.5. Said platen is fixed upon a shaft or axle 1'6, journa'led in the end walls 1'? of a platen-frame 18 mounted in a carriage 20 supported on a front rail (not shown) and a rear rail 21. The carriage is provided with the usual pointer 27, operating over a scale 28. The platen may be rotated by knobs or finger-wheels 3O fixed to the ends of shaft 16, or by the usual linespace mechanism, of which only the linesp'a'ce handle 31 is shown. The carriage comprises, in addition to the forwardly-extending line-space handle 31, a forwardlyextending finger-piece 32, fixed thereto, for returning the carriage and a carriage-release lever 33.
The sound-deadening casingor hood conr prises a body part 40 and a cover 41 hingedly connected to said "body part at the rear, said body part comprising a. rear wall and side walls 43 in fixed relation to each other. \Vith the cover raised, a 'typewriting machine is inserted in the body part, and, for this purpose, almost the entire front of the body part is open. The front opening is considerably larger than the width of the machine, so that, after the latter is positioned within the body part, there is still ample room at the sides to allow access to various mechanisms, such as the ribbonwinding and reversing mechanism at the sides of the machine.
To aid in rapidly positioning the m'a chine within .the casing, there .are provided brackets 35, fixed to the rear wall 42 and extending along a base 86., which, in this instance, is of felt or other sound-deadening material, said brackets having openings 37 for receiving the usual rear typewriter feet 8 .T he brackets practically rest upon the base, thus avoiding excessive bending of the brackets downwardly and out -of alignment by the weight of .the machine when the latter is incorrectly placed on the brackets and strikes them with considerable force. The body partterminates at its upper side and front edges considerably below the lower surface of the platen, so that, when the cover is raised, such mechanism as the fingerwheels 30 for rotating "the platen will be readily accessible. The sides 43 are provided with lateral extensions or shelves 44, over which the carriage travels to the left and right.
The cover 41 is hingedly connected at to the upper edge of the rear wall 42 of the body part, said rear wall extending upwardly above the other walls of the body part to permit the cover to swing clear of the machine more easily. The cover comprises side walls 51, which rest upon the outer edges 44 of shelves '44, a rear wall 52 in line with rear wall '42, and a top wall or a ceiling 53 extending forwardly and downwardly and provided with a transparent plate 54 for permitting the interior of the casing to be viewed, said top wall terminating at the front in a slotted member 55, through which various carriage levers extend, as will be described hereinafter. Said cover has a front wall 56, which extends downwardly slightly below the front edges of shelves 44 and lies adjacent the front of the main frame 10, just above the banks of keys 12. Said front wall '56 is provided with an arcuate portion 57 which closes the opening 63 in the usual front plate 63 on the mainframe 10 lead ing to the typebars, so that, when the cover is raised, access may be had to the type-bars .to clean the types. The front wall 56 is also provided with cutout portions 58 and 59 to expose a line-loch release key 64 and a ril hon-color shift-key fixed to the front of the main frame 10. lVhen the cover is lowcred, therefore, it will be seen that the machine is completely enclosed at the rear and sides, but only partly .enclosed at the front. To close said front of the casing more effectually, there is provided, in addition to the front wall 56 at the upper part of the open ing, a cross-bar 60 at the lower portion of "the front opening between the sides 43, said cross-bar having extensions 61 to close that portion of the main frame .of the typewriting machine from thebase 36 to the guidecomb G6 in which the key-levers operate, and .to support the front part of the machine when the casing is lifted with the machine therein. There remain open the substantially rectangular portions of .the casing-front contained. between the wall 56, the bar 60, the sides of the casing, and the sides of the machine. To close these openings, there are provided swinging members or doors 69, hinged at '{0 to the front edges of the sides 43, said swinging members extending from the sides 42-3 .to the sides of the machine, and from the base 36 to a point slightly above the shelves 44, to completely fill the rectangular spaces above mentioned. A sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine comprising a frame havine' a keyboard extension, said casing coinn sing a body part and a cover hinged at the rear to said body part, said body part comprising a rear wall and side walls, the front of said body part being open to pernnt the insertion of the t oewritin machine in said casing, and doors hinged at their outer edges on said casing and swim-gable inwardly to close the front of the casing at each side of the machine, said doors having at their inner edges sound-deadening material to engage the machine frame at each side of the keyboard extension and effect a soundseahng fit therewith, means effective at the upper edges of the doors for locking the latter in closed position, comprising cooperative provisions such that the closing of the cover, when said doors are closed, W111 effect locking of the :latter, and means upon lateral. extensions adjacent the ends of back wall, side walls, a frr the rear wall of the casing and the doors for holding said machine in said casing in operable position.
7 A sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine comprising a main frame, a forward keyboard extension of said frame and feet for supporting the main frame, said casing comprising a body part and cover, said body part comprising a rear wa l, side walls, the front of said body part being open to permit the insertion of the typewriting machine, said forward extension projecting outside of said casing when the insertion has been completed, doors hinged on said casing and swingable to effective position for closing that portion of the front opening between said side walls and the sides of said frame, means for closing the opening between the main frame and a surface upon which said feet rest, said means comprising a vertical plate secured at its ends to said side walls, provided with a substantially central upwardly extending portion and laterally-extending portions on either side thereof closing the lower portion of the space between the machine frame and said side walls, and means for locking the doors in effective position, said last-named means comprising a latch carried by each of said doors and operable to engage said vertical plate.

10. A sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine, said casing comprising a back wall, side walls, -a front wall having an opening through which the keyboard of the machine pro ects, said wallsconstituting portion of the front wall beneath the opening in the latwr.

A sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine, said casing comprising a body part and a cover for said the body part comprising side walls, a rear wall and a front wall, the front wall having an opening therein to enable the machine to be inserted into thecasing, and two doors pivoted at the front wall and on the forward ends of the side walls of said casing, said doors being effective to close the opening in the front wall not occupied by the machine, the free ends of the doors engaging the machine, said cover comprising a front wall, and rearwardly-offset projections on said doors to engage behind the front wall of the cover to hold the doors closed when the cover is in its lowered position, and permitting the doors to be flush with the front wall of the cover when the casing is closed.

A sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine comprising a main frame having a forwardly-extending keyboard extension having key-levers therein and a keylever-guiding comb-plate at the front of the main frame, said casing comprising a body part and a cover, the body part comprising two side walls, a rear wall. and a front wall, the front wall having an opening to enable the machine to be placed within the casing with the keyboard extension of said machine protruding from said casing through the opening in the front wall, said front wall including a cross-bar disposed beneath and near the front of said machine and having a substantially central upward extension to close the space beneath the comb-plate and lateral portions on either side of said central extension to form front wall sections between the machine frame and the side walls of the casing below the machine frame.
13. A casing for a typewriting machine comprising a forwardly-extending keyboard section, said casing comprising a front wall through which the keyboard section protrudes and having an opening above said keyboard section, three pivoted elements to body part,
close the openings inthe front wall at the sides of and above said keyboard section, said elements comprising a cover having a front wall to close the openingabove said keyboard section, and two doors pivoted on said casing to close the openings at the sides of said keyboard section and to co-operate with-the front wall of the cover to close the space not occupied by the machine in the opening in the front wall.
14-. A sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine, the typewriting machine comprising a forwardly-extending keyboard section having key-levers therein, said casingcomprising a body part and a cover, the
. body part comprising two side walls, a rear wall and a front wall, the front wall having an opening to enable the machine to be placed within the casing with the keyboard section protruding from said casing and through the opening in the front wall, a
cross-bar forming part of the front wall and disposed beneath said machine to close the space beneath the key-levers and enabling the casing to raise the front part of the typewriting machine when thecasing is lifted and the cross-barfis brought into engagement with the machine, and carriagelocators projecting from the rear wall of said casing to engage the typewriter feet, said locators extending beneath the rear portion of the typewriter base to engage and raise the same when the casing is lifted.

The combination of a sound-deadening casing, and a typewriting machine there in, said casing comprising an open bottom body partand a cover, means being provided upon said casing to engage and locate the typewriting machine and to raise the same when the casing is lifted, said means comprising brackets upon the rear wall of the casing engaging the rear feet of the typewriting machine and a crossbar beneath and near the front of said machine forming a part of the front wall of said casing and engaging and supporting said machine when the casing is lifted.
16. In a sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine, a vertical plate extending beneath the keyboard-extension of the frame immediately to the front of the front posts, and having between the sides of said extension an upwardlyprojecting portion provided with vertical slots.
17 A sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine, said machine comprising a main frame and a forward extension of said frame having a typewriter keyboard, said casing comprising a body-part and a coverpa rt hinged thereto, said body-part comprising a rear wall and side walls, the front of said body-part being open to permit the insertion of a typewriting machine, said forward extension projecting out of said casing, said side Walls being provided at their top with laterally-extending portions to support the cover in closed position, said cover being provided on its opposite ends with lugs, engaging the edges of the lateral extensions to prevent the lateral displacement of the 'upper portions of the side walls when the cover is closed, swingable doors pivotally mounted at the front edges of the opposite side walls having their inner edges provided with extensions of sound-deadening; material, to engage the sides of the typewriter-frame and prevent the escape of sound between said edges and said frame, said cover having a downwardly-extending portion on its front face, arranged to co operate with said typewriter-frame and with said doors, to provide a closed front for said casing, and a bar fixed to and joining the bases of the'side walls at their front, to prevent the displacement of the lower portion of said side walls and provide means whereby the swingable doors may be held in closed position.
18. A sound-deadening bottomless casing for a typewriting machine, comprising a body and a cover, and combined locating and lifting devices for the feet of the machine to position the same in the casing, said devlces mounted on the walls of the cover normally below the machine frame and engaging the frame when the cover is lifted with respect to the machine as the latter stands in typing position.
19. A sound-deadening bottomless casing for a typewriting machine, comprising a body fitting loosely about the machine to rest upon the supporting surface therefor, a cover for the body, and a connection between the body and the machine to lift the machine as the latter stands in typing position with the body when the body is lifted.
20. The combination with a typewriting machine, of a sound-deadening bottomless casing therefor having an open bottom, and a loose connection with the machine to constrain the machine as the latter stands in typing position to lift with the casing and to permit the casing to engage the supporting surface for the machine.
