Application September 26, 1955, Serial No. 536,359 9 Claims. (Cl. 248-22) This invention relates to an improved adjustable safety mounting means for typewriters or similar office machines. More specifically the invention relates to an arrangement for mounting a typewriter on a desk whereby the typewriter position may be easily adjusted.
It is a prime object of this invention to provide an improved arrangement for mounting a typewriter and copyholder on a desk surface whereby the typewriter and copy holder may be readily moved and adjusted to a number of positions by the operator.
Still another object is to provide an improved typewriter mounting means having provisions for attaching the base of a copy-holder to the typewriter so that during angular adjustment or positioning of the typewriter the copy-holder is simultaneously moved to the desired adjusted position.
A still further object of the invention is to provide typewriter mounting means including the typewriter base, .a copy-holder, and a flexible pad, which are connected together in assembly relative to a supporting platform so that the typewriter, copy-holder and flexible pad may be relatively adjusted to a plurality of positions relative to said platform. A still further object is the provision of an improved mounting means for typewriters, the said mounting means including safety securingmeans readily adaptable to standard typewriter bases and for adjustably securing the same to the platform of a typewriter desk.
Still another object is the provision of an improved mounting meansfor typewriters, the said mounting means including in combination with the typewriter, a copyholder, and a flexible pad means, for flexibly and adjustably positioning the said combination on the platform of a typewriter desk.
These and other objects will become more readily ap parent from a reading of the specification when examined in connection with the accompanying sheets of drawings.

Referring now particularly to Figure 1, a typewriter or similar office machine is generally designated by the reference character 10. The typewriter 10 comprises a carriage 11 consisting of a housing 12 and a base 13. A keyboard is indicated at 14. A typewriter table is designated at 15, the same comprising a top 16 covering a typewriter compartment which is normally closed by means of a door 17. A platform 18 is positioned to support the typewriter 10 in its use position as shown in Figure l, the said platform 18 also being movable to position the said typewriter in the compartment. The particular hinging arrangement for converting the platform 18 to a use and non-use position is not indicated since any conventioual construction may be utilized.
As best shown in Figure 2, the platform 18 contains a pair of transversely spaced substantially parallel slots 19 and29. The slot 20 is irregular in that one of its edges extends in a gradual manner away from its opposite edge to provide an enlarged portion indicated at 21. The reason for this particular shape slot will become presently apparent. A flexible typewriter pad 22 is positioned on the platform 18. The pad 22 may be of a conventional type, however, having openings 23 which are transversely positioned to register or align with the slots 19 and 20. A plate or base 24 is positioned on top of the pad 22, the base having carried thereon transversely spaced upright pedestal members 25, best shown in Figures 1 and 2. Transversely spaced arms 26'are hingedly connected to the pedestal members 25 as indicated at 27. The arms 26 suitably support an adjustable copy-paper support indicated at 28. The type of copy-paper support 28 herein disclosed can be conventional, the same generally comprising means whereby the paper or sheet which is to be copied may be moved a line at a time in such a manner that the operator who is typing will see only the one line until it is typed, whereupon the operator then moves the copy-holder to expose a subsequent line.
As best shown in Figures 1, 2 and 4, the typewriter 10 also includes front legs 29, the same consisting of cupshaped members 30 which are supported on rubber cupshaped feet 31. The front portion of the base 13 is providedwith threaded bores 32 which are engaged by screws 33 to suitably connect the legs 29 to the said base. This generally is the conventional construction for flexibly supporting the front portion of a typewriter on a typewriter desk.
The plate or base 24 is provided with openings 35 which are in registry with openings 23 and slots 19 and 20. As best shown in Figure 3, the rear portion of the base 13 is supported on a platform 18 by means of transversely spaced spacers 36. The base 13 is provided at its rearmost portion with transversely spaced threaded recesses 34 and the spacers 36 include projecting threaded v studs 37 which are screwed into the recesses or bores 34 to securely fasten the spacers relative to the base 13. The spacers 36 are also provided with internal threaded bores 38 for connecting thereto securing members generally designated by the reference character 39. Each securing member 39 comprises a threaded portion 40, one end of which is screwed into each of the internal bores 38. As indicated by means of the jam nuts 41, the plate 24 is securely connected to the spacers 36. Each of these securing members 39 also includes a head 42 which is disposed below the upper edge of the platform 18, each head 42 also having connected thereon a washer 43.
In assembly of the improved mounting means shown, the platform 18 is first provided with the slots 19 and y 20 as indicated. The pad 22 is then placed in position with the openings 23 in registry with the said slots 19 and 20. The base or plate 24 is then placed in the position shown in Figures 1 and 3 and the spacers 36 are then screwed into' the base 13. The internal bores 38 are placed into registry or alignment with the openings 35, Bend the slots 19 and 20, and the securing members 39 are then screwed into the spacers 36. The jam nuts 41 have been previously threaded onto the securing members 3.9; and after the securing members 39 have been securely tightened with respect to the spacers 36 the jam nuts 41 are then tightened. Thesecuring members 39 have been positioned with respect to the slots 19 and 29 as. indicated in Figure 3. After the jam nuts 41 have been tightened the mounting arrangement has been ac complished, and by virtue of the fact that the heads 42 of the securing members 39 are disposed considerably below the surface of the platform 18, the typewriter 10, the plate 24 and the pad 22 may be readily and freely adjusted relative to the platform 18 to the positions indicated in Figures and 6. Thus the typewriter in combination with the. copy-paper support 28 and the flexible pad 22 may be adjusted as one unit simultaneously to a plurality of. positions, the said parts, however, being securely held on the platform against dislocation from said platform. In other words, thetypewriter and copy-holder, with the flexible pad, can be adjustedto a number of positions in a linear direction or angularly as shown in Figure 6 with out any danger of the typewriter falling from the desk. By virtue of the novel slot arrangement and its enlarged portion 21, angular positioning of the typewriter is readily effected. It is, of course, obvious that the slot 19 may be made similar to the slot 20 so that angular positioning can also be effected in an opposite direction to that shown in Figure 6.
Thus the typewriter is flexibly supported on the pad 22 and securely connected against possible dislocation, the said typewriter and copy-holder being simultaneously adjustable to the angular or linear position desired by the operator. Thus it is not necessary in each case, when adjusting the typewriter position, to also separately adjust the copyholder since by the novel mounting arrangement shown, the two are adjusted in combination. The modification shown in a Figure 7 is particularl adaptable to typewriters which are already in use in the field and where a conversion is desired to secure the desired efiiciency and advantages shown in the preferred embodiment. It must be understood that all of the parts which are similar have the same reference character and the base 13 of the typewriter is provided with the threaded bores 34. In the conventional typewriter the front and rear legs are similar and thus, as shown in Figure 7, the rear legs 44- comprise cup-shaped members 45 having cup-shaped rubber feet 46. To adapt the rear legs 44 to the novel mounting arrangement it is simply necessary to remove the screws 33-which normally maintain the legs in: position and a spacer member 47 having a stud 47' is screwed in position in the bore 34 as indicated. The spacer member 47 also includes an internal bore 48 to which a threaded securing member 49 is connected. The securing member 49 includes a threaded portion 50 which is screwed into the threaded bore 48 and a jam nut 51 is tightened against the plate 24 which normally supports the copy-holder. The securing member 49, similarly to the securing member 39, is provided with ahead 52 and a washer 53. Assembly of the parts is similar to that above described, in this connection, however, an additional rubber or flexible pad 54 is utilized. The flexible pad 54 includes a pair of openings 55, the same being in alignment with the. slots 19 and 20, openings 23 and 35. The normal flexibility of the legs 44 is of course lost when the spacer member 47 is tightened in position indicated. Thus'the, plates 24 and the base 13 rigidly connected, and in order to provide sufficient resiliency the additional flexible pad 54zis addedlas. indicated.
The adjustment of the typewriter and: copy-holder in the modifieddislosure shown in Figure 7 is. the same as above described and the same advantages are apparent. Thus it can be seen that the objects of the invention have been fully achieved and that an improved safety adjustable mounting means for typewriters has been disclosed. It must be understoodthat various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope thereof as defined in the appended claims. i
What is claimed is:
l. For a typewriter having a base, a carriage supported thereon and feet connected to said base at the forward portion thereof; adjustable mounting means comprising platform adapt d to be supported on a desk, said platform having a pair of transversely spaced elongated slots, one of said slots having opposed walls with one wall extending angularly with respect to the other wall whereby'one end of the slot is larger than its other end,
" a resilient pad supported on said platform, a plate member disposed on top of said pad, said plate member including an upright pedestal adapted to support a copyholder above the typewriter carriage, the plate member. having first openings, the pad having second enlarged openings, the first and second openings being respectively in registry and in registry with said slots, the feet being adapted to rest on said pad, 2. pair of spacer members adapted to be positioned at the rearward portion of said base, said spacer members each having an internally threaded bore and a projecting threaded stud, said studs being adapted to engage threaded openings in the typewriter base, a threaded member fastened in the threaded bore of each spacer, said threaded member extending through the openings and slots and having an enlarged head portion disposed below said platform, and a jam nut on each said threaded member disposed in the enlarged openings for securing said plate against said spacer members, said threaded members permitting angular and linear adjustment of said typewriter, plate and pad relative to said platform.

For a typewriter having a base, a carriage supported thereon and feet connected to said base at the forward portion thereof; adjustable mounting means comprising a platform adapted to be supported on a desk, said platform having a pair of transversely spaced slots, one of said slots having opposed walls with one wall extending angularly with respect to the other wall whereby one end of the slot is larger than its other end, first and second resilient pads supported on said platform, a plate member disposed on top of said pads, said plate member including an upright pedestal adapted to support a copyholder above the typewriter carriage, the plate member having first openings, the pads having second enlarged openings, the first and second openings being respectively in registry and in registry with said slots, the feet being adapted to rest on said pad, a pair of spacer members adapted to be positioned at the rearward portion of said base, said spacer members each having an internally threaded bore and a projecting threaded stud, said studs being adapted to engage threaded openings in the type writer base, a threaded member fastened in the threaded bore of each spacer, said threaded member extending through the openings and slots and having an enlarged head portion disposed below said platform, and a jam nut on each said threaded member disposed in the enlarged openings for securing said plate against said spacer members, said threaded members permitting angular and linear adjustment of said typewriter, plate and pads relative to said platform.

For a typewriter having a base, a carriage supported thereon and feet connected to said base at the forward portion thereof; adjustable mounting means comprising a platform adapted to be supported on a desk, said platform having a pair of transversely spaced substantially parallel slots, one of said slots having opposed walls with one wall extending angularly with respect to the other wall whereby one end of the slot is larger than its other end, a resilient pad supported on said platform, a plate member disposed on top of said pad, said plate member including an upright pedestal adapted to support a copyassaeoo holder above the typewriter carriage, the plate member having first openings, the pad having second enlarged openings, the first and second openings being respectively in registry and in registry with said slots, the feet being adapted to rest on said pad, a pair of spacer members adapted to be positioned at the rearward portion of said base, said spacer members each having an internally threaded bore, and a securing means, said securing means being adapted to be connected to the base of said typewriter, a threaded member fastened in the threaded bore of each spacer, said threaded member extending through the openings and slots and having an enlarged head portion disposed below said platform, and a jam nut on each said thread-ed member disposed in the enlarged openings for securing said plate against said spacer members, said threaded members permitting angular and linear adjustment of said typewriter, plate and pad relative to said platform.

For a typewriter having a base, a carriage supported thereon and feet connected to said base at the forward portion thereof; adjustable mounting means comprising a platform adapted to be supported on a desk, said platform having a pair of transversely spaced substantially parallel slots, one of said slots having opposed walls with one wall extending angularly with respect to the other wall whereby one end of the slot is larger than its other end, a resilient pad supported on said platform, a plate member disposed on top of said pad, said plate member including an upright pedestal adapted to support a copyholder above the typewriter carriage, the plate member having first openings, the pad having .second enlarged openings, the first and second openings being respectively in registry and in registry with said slots, the feet being adapted to rest on said pad, a pair of spacer'members adapted to be disposed at the rearward portion of said base, securing means on said spacer members, said securing means being adapted to be connected to the base of said typewriter, a securing stud connected to each spacer, said securing studs extending through the openings and slots and having an enlarged head portion disposed below said platform, and a jam nut on each said threaded member disposed in the enlarged openings for securing said plate against said spacer members, said securing studs permitting angular and linear adjustment of said typewriter, plate and pad relative to said platform.

For a typewriter having a base, a carriage supported thereon and feet connected to said base at the forward portion thereof; adjustable mounting means comprising a platform adapted to be supported on a desk, said platform having a pair of transversely spaced elongated slots, a resilient pad supported on said platform, a plate member disposed on top of said pad, said plate member including an upright pedestal adapted to support a copy-holder above the typewriter carriage, the plate member having first openings, the pad having second openings, the first and second openings being respectively in registry and in registry with said slots, the feet being adapted to rest on said pad, a pair of spacer members adapted to be disposed at the rearward portion of said base, securing means on said spacer members, said securing means bcing adapted to be connected to the base of said typewriter, a securing stud connected to each spacer, said securing studs extending through the openings and slots and having an enlarged head portion disposed below said platform, and means on each said threaded member disposed in the second openings for securing said plate against said space-r members, said securing studs permitting linear adjustment of said typewriter, plate and pad relative to said platform.

For an office machine having a base and an operators carriage mounted thereon; mounting means comprising a platform, said platform having a pair of transversely disposed elongated slots, one of said slots having opposed walls with one wall extending angularly with respect to the other wall whereby one end of the slot is larger than its other end, a resilient pad supported on said platform, said pad having first openings in alignment with said slots, a plate on said pad, said plate including an upright pedestal adapted to support copy paper adjacent said carriage, said plate having second openings in alignment with said first openings and said slots, adjustable securing means connecting said base to said platform, comprising, a pair of transversely disposed spacer members adapted to be connected to said base, adjustable securing means extending through said second openings and adjustably connected 'to said spacer members to clamp the plate to said spacer members, said securing means including a head portion extending through the second openings for limiting the upward movement of said base relative to said platform, and for limiting the linear and angular movement of said machine relative to said platform.

For an olfice machine having a base and an operators carriage mounted thereon; mounting means comprising a platform, said platform having a pair of transversely disposed slots, one of said slots having opposed walls with one wall extending angularly with respect to the other wall whereby one end of the slot is larger than its other end, a plate on said platform, said plate including an upright pedestal adapted to support copy paper adjacent said carriage, said plate having openings in alignment with said slots, adjustable securing means connecting said base to said platform comprising, a pair of transversely disposed spacer members adapted to be connected to said base, adjustable securing means extending through said openings and adjustably connected to said spacer members to clamp the plate to said spacer members, said securing means including a head portion extending through the openings for limiting the upward movement of said base relative to said platform, and for limiting the linear and angular movement of said machine relative to said platform.

For an office machine having a base and an operators carriage mounted thereon; mounting means comprising a platform, said platform having a pair of transversely disposed slots, one of said slots having opposed walls with one wall extending angularly with respect to the other wall whereby one end of the slot is larger than its other end, a resilient pad supported on said platform, said pad having openings in alignment with said slots, adjustable securing means connecting said base to said platform comprising, a pair of transversely disposed spacer members connected to said base, adjustable securing means extending through said openings and adjustably connected to said spacer members, said securing means including a portion extending through the openlugs for limiting the linear and angular movement of said machine relative to said platform.

For an ofiice machine having a base and an operators carriage mounted on said base; mounting means comprising a platform having slots, oneof said slots having opposed walls with one wall extending angularly with respect to the other wall whereby one end of the slot is larger than its other end, spacer members for spacing said base vertically with respect to said platform, said spacer members including means connecting the same to said base, adjustable means connected "to said spacer members and extending through said slots for limiting the upward movement of the machine relative to said platform, said adjustable means being slidable in said slots and permitting limited angular and linear movement of said machine relative to said platform.
