"1 ivm .majvu7-n1 italiani STAMPING MACHINE.
Application filed May 26, 1925.
This invention relates to new and usci'ul improvements in a stamping machine,
(.)ne object of the invention is to proi'lucc a machine specially designed ior marking articles oi any character, and more particularly for marking each individual piece of lumber to indicate the grade to which it belongs.
Another object ol the invention is to pro duce a stamping machine eipiipped with anv ink pad arranged to automatically ink the die or type, after each application ot' the die to the object stamped. v
A. further object oit the invention is to produce a machine oi the character described having an improved die bed, and die whereby the die may be readily removed and replaced.
lVith the above and other' objects in view this invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts an example o't which is given in this specification and illustrated lin the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 shows a fragmentary s'de elevation of the complete device, Figure 2 shows a. sectional view thereof, taken on the line 1-1 o1' Figure 1.
Figure 3 shows a fragl'nentary longitiulinal view of the frame.
Figure l shows a 'fragmentary longitudinal sectional view taken transversely through the machine.
Figure 5 shows a transverse sectional v'ew taken on the line 5 5 ot Figures, and
Figure 6 shows a transverse sectional view, taken on line 6 6 ot Figure 1.
Referring new more particularly to the drawings wherein like numerals otreterence designate similar parts in each ot' the figures, the numerals 1, 1, designate the side members ot the trame, which are spaced apart and termed with inside grooves 2, 2 forming tracks lor the type or die bed 3. At one end these side members are connected together by the yoke 4, which has a central taped hole 5 into which one end oi the tubular housing 6, forming a handle, is threaded. The adjacent end ot this housing has an inside annular flange 7, forming a bearing through which the operating rod 8 works. The inner end of this rod is attached to the bed 5 and its outer end has the handgrip 9 secured thereto. A coil spring 8 surrounds the rod 8 and has one end seated on the flange and its other end resting against serial; No. 33,022.
a collar 10 which is carried by the rod 8 and which is adapted to abut the capii, screwed onto said housing and which also i'orms a bearing tor the rod 8'. Y
The trame has a back plate, 12, secured thereto, as well asthe iront spaced plates 21, 21, provided to receive set screws 22, 22
on which the said trip arms slide. The lower ends ot these arms are forwardly curved and engage against the corresponding ends of the ink pad 16. y
There is a die, or type, 23 attached to the lower end of the bed 3. This de is held in place at one end by means oi a strap 241 attached to the adjacent side oi the bed and whose tree end has the studs 25 which tit into corresponding sockets in the adjacent end of said die. Its other end is held in place by means of a flexible strap26, fastened` at one end to the adjacent edge oi the. bed 3, and whose tree end is overturned, and thus adapted to engage in a notch in the cent end ot the die block.
The strap 2G has the knurled grips 28, 28, one on each side, which may be f lgrasped` and the overturned end ot the strap 2G thus released irom its notch` and the die 23, then removed, when desired.
The ink pad 16 is normally held in contact against the face ot the die o1 type by means of a suitable pressure spring 29.
Vhen it is desired to mark, or grade, a piece oi? lumber, the stamping machine is applied thereto by standing the same thereon, the side members 1 forming the supporting legs. The rod 8 is then suddenly forced downwardly by striking the grip or head, 9. This will carry the bed 3 downwardly causing the lingers 19 to ride ofi of the inside shoulders 30, 30, of the arms 20, whereou they usually rest, thus forcing said arms outwardly, and causing the ink pad to clear the path of the die and said die moves on down and strikes the article to be stamped or graded and leaves its imprint thereon. Thereupon the pressure ot the springs 8 liz and 2S) canse the parts to assume their original positions, with the nik pad resting against the face ot the die to re-ink the saine.
Vhen it is desired to remove the die ,2-3 the grip 9 is 'forced fully down and the pivoted latch 31 is engaged' intlie netoli 32 of the rod 8, andwlien locked in this position the' die yi'iill. li'i'eiidered aecessible tot removal or replacement.
l. A stamping machine i' havin;- side menibers formi` traeksf a. diebed nioaiable bet'!\i'ien said tracks,` a tubular handle carried ,by the `ran'ie, an operati ng' rod iiorkingf throiigh said handle, one end ol' which is' connected to said die-bed7 a yield-able member; one endV of which works afianst and airalaitineiit' carried by therol'l againfet `which the other endv of eldable member iifoi'lis,v an ink `pad l betreen said'nienibers and mounted riding a 'traine to piyot :on a' t1 'ense eccentric axis', a strap secured to eaeli edge of said bed,sai d straps enga'grging"v with Said tracks and having their Ylf'ee enilsiornied Witlitripfinbers; trip ari-ns toi-med Witli slionlders against which sai-:l ilng'ers w'oi'l;4 and also having oblong ings? bearing members secured tovtlie .1 ctiye sides ot the iframe on Wliieli said limi-ings irork, the 'free ende of said trip :name being' forwardly curve-d against the respeetive er. lsot said ink pad, a diecarri'ed by said bed anda press-nre spring` norma ly holdin@- said inlr pad .in eoiitaet against the 'face o saiddiel 2.
