UNITED STATES RICHARD BARRETT LOWE, OF MADISON, SOUTH DAKOTA.
DISPLAY RACK.
Application filed April 6, 1925. Serial No. 21,140.
The object of my invention is to provide a display rack ot' simple, durable and inexpensive construction, which is especially designed to be used for the purpose of displaying sample goods, such as congoleum and linoleum rugs and the like, in Such a manner that a large number of samples may be supported in a comparatively' small space, and so constructed and arranged that any one of the. samples may be moved to position whereby it may be supported in a vertical position where it may be easily seen by the customer.
A further 'object is to provide a display7 rack for the purpose above described, which may be easily and quickly dissembled for the purpose of shipping in a small and compact package.
A further object is to provide a display rack which is especially adaptedto support heavy composition rugs, such as linoleum or congoleum.
My invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of the device, whereby 'the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a top view of device. p
Figure 2 is a front view of the same.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of one `of the pivot plates.
Figure 4 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 1. Y
Figure 5 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 2.
Figure 6 isa detail sectionalvview taken on the line 6-6 of Figure 2.
My improved device comprisesa supporting member 10 designed to be supported in a vertical position, with one face against the outer tace ot' a wall. The member 10 is provided with openings 11 ior the purpose my improved ot receiving screws by means of which the said support is secured in position. Running transversely across the trent face of the member l0 near its top is an angle iron 12 secured in position by means of bolts or rivets 13, one face of the angle being adjacent to the member 10 while the other member is mounted perpendicular therewith. The perpendicular member is provided with a series of pivot openings 14 which are spaced equidistant apart.
Near the bottom end of the member 10 is a similar angle iron 15 mounted in an in'- verted position from the member 12 and provided with a stop lug 15a. In each of the openings 14 of the member 12 I have provided a brace rod 16 which has a vertically arranged member 17 which extend through the said opening 14, said members 17 being secured in position by means of Cotter keys 18. The body portion of the member 16 eX- I tends downwardly and outwardly, as clearly shown in Figure 2.
, The lower end of each vof the rods 16 is provided with a flattened portion 19 which is provided with an opening to receive a small bolt 20. The openings 14 of the member 15 are provided with a series of vertically arranged pivot pins 21, the upper end of each of which is provided with a cotter key 22. The lower end of each ot' the pins` 21 is provided with a strap iron 23 which has one end formed with a loop 24 designed to surround the pin 21. The body portion 23 enters the said loop in a tangent manner so that the center of the pivot 21 will rest in a plane a slight distance from the inner tace of the member 23. The upper edge of the member 23 is provided with a laterally extending flange 25, see Figure 6. The depth of the said flange is considerably greater than the thickness of the material to be supported.
The member 23 is provided with a series of bolts 26 designed to enter the upper edge of the sample 28. A clamp plate 29 is pro vided for the youter face of the upper edge of the sample 28, and is provided with openings 30 for receiving bolts 26, theopenings beinfr so located that the upper edge of the memibcr 29 will rest adjacent and beneath the lower face of the member 25. The nuts 31 are provided for the bolts 26. By this means the sample 28 may be rigidly connected with the member 23. The outer' end of each of the bars 23 is supported by the outer and lower end of a corresponding rod 16the bolt 20 being placed through the outer one of the openings 30.
The spacing between the openings 14 is such that the members 23;ma-y be folded to a position `substantially parallel with the member 10 with the outer ones adjacent to the lug 15a, and when in said position the bars 23 will be substantially parallel and adjacent to each other. It will be seen that when placed in this position, if two or more lil of the' samples are swung together to a position, say at right angles to their initial position, it Will be seenthat as they are swung from the lirst position to the second, the body portion of the members 23 Will-have a slightly longitudinal movement relative to each other. rlhis would' cause the nut oit the bolt 2O to engage the end ot the member 19 aird a' swinging movement would thereby be prevented. To overcome this diticulty l li'ave'tornied a bule'cd portion 32 1n each ot vthe-bars 29 near its outer end, the bulged porti'o'ii'beiug provided with inclined ends which will cause the two adjacent bars tosuin'g outwardly i'i'oin each other by the vlower end ot the member 19 engaging -said inclined portion 253 as said members 23 are movedlongitudiiialty with each other.
Thus it- \vil'l be seen that I have provided a display rack o'l' simple, durable and inexr ensi've'construction which inav be easil a .l
'lies' in the tact that the supportingV bar 23 may lie/detached troni the angular plates 12 and' 15 and the` bolts 2li and 30 removed, u'l'iiclr may then be used as a ten'iplet tor punching the holes inthe upper edge ot the linoleuin sample, by simply laying the said linoleuin sample on a suitable' support such -as a block ot' wood', and' rthen placing the bar' 23 on the uppery surlace of said sample with the iang'e 25 adjacent tothe upper edge ot the sample, said flange serving' as a. guide toi" easily and quickly ali'ningg' the plate 23, atter ul-iicli vthe bolt holes in sai'd plate 3 -vi'iiay be used for receiving;` thev punch and thereby insuringthe proper spacing' of the vpiii'icl'red holes. f'lhe openings of all ot said bars being' the saine distance apart, so'that one' bar may be used to punch the holes tor all ot the sain'iples, alter which the sa'i'dbar vi-'r'ia` anain be placed in iosition on the rack.

2. A display racl: coii'ip'rising `a supporting ineinber, a pair ot angle irons adjacent to one tace oi said support and parallel with each` other, each ot Which is provided with a laterally extending portion, each of said laterally extending' portions being,` provided 'with' a series oli pivot openings, a brace rod 'tor each ot the openings of one ot said angles, a supporting bar having a pivot meniber 'foreach of the Vopeiii'ngs Ot the other one ot said angles, said bars being arranged in a horizontal-position, the outer end ot which is supported by said brace rods, the upper edge' otsai'd bar being provided with a laterally extending flange, a series oi bolts for said bar, a detachable clamping plate `carried by said bolts andinounted parallel With said bar and having its upper edge adjacent to the saidv flange, the outer end of each' oi said Vclamp members being provided with an outwardly bulgedE portion.
3. In a devi'ceo't thel class described, a support, a series ot horizontally arranged supporting bars pivoted to said support, said bars being nrounte'd close together and designed to swing/gin' a common' plane, means for supporting' the outer end olf each oi said bars, means tor supporting a sample from each ot' said lars, said bar supporting' means and sa'i'd sample supporting means each including` transversely ari'angedbolts havingpi'ojectii'rg' ends, mea-ns carried by each ot said bars tor preventing' tl'ieprojecting ends 'ot the bolts ot one of said bars from engagr4 ing the proj ecting ends of the bolts of an adjacent bar due to'tlieir longitudinal move.- inent relative to each other as the said bars are swung` in a common plane.
