Description

C. BOOTE July 15; 1930.
FILING DEVICE Filed Sept. 24, 1928 gwmnto'c Uhar/esBoofe Patented July 15, 1 930 CHARLES iaoo rn, on JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA FILING nnvron I Application filed September 2 4, 1938.
.This invention relates to filing devices. It is an object of the invention to provide a device which may readily be attached, for example, to a drawer in 5 vide adjustable partitions in the drawer.
A further object iseto provide the adjustable partitions in such drawers with locking means for securing them in place.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the description proceeds. 1
Referring to the accompanying which are made a part hereof and similar reference parts,
drawings, on which cabinet showing my device secured upon one of the drawers, 1
Figure 2, a vertical section through one of drawers showing my invention, Figure 8, a perspective view of a detail showing the locking device, 1 Figure 4, a modified form of the device, and Figure 5, a further modified form.
In the drawings numeral 10 indicates a filing cabinet having a number of drawers 11.
These drawers may be of well-known construction which have upstanding bars 12 on the sides of the drawer, or on the innerside constructions not. secure bars to the of the front end 13. In provided with such bars I inner sides of the drawer. On theinner sides of the drawer at its rear end I secure other upstanding bars 14. To the upper ends I of bars '12 and 14 on each side I secure a rail 15 having spaced notches 16 in its upper side. The bottom of the drawer is provided with spaced notches corresponding to the notches in the rails 15. Cross bars'l'? having partition plates 18 secured thereon have their ends 7 adapted to engage the notches 16 in the rails 15 while the lower end of the plates 18 engage the notches in the bottom of the drawer.
The bars 17 have hook-like ends 19 which extend down over the sides of the rails 15. In order to hold the bars 17 against accidental displacement I provide clamps 20 which have 1 ears 21 and 22. IVhen the hook-like end 19 50 is placed over the rail 15 with the ends of the a filing cabinet to procharacters indicate similar or corrugated metal. pensive grooved bottom for drawers and makes themreadily, convertible into drawers I t'ion plate'I may place them on the side rail Serial No. $8,008.
bar 1'? in the notch 16 the clamps 20 are moved over against therails l5,so that the ears 21 and 22 extend above and below the rails 15..
This prevents the -ba'rs 17from being lifted out of the notchesl6." 1n place I may providea slightindentation 23 in thebar 17 and a corresponding lugor hump 24 on theinner side of the clamp. When the clamp is moved into holding position the hump will slide into the depression 23' and hold the clamp in lockedposition. Burrs 25 I "onth'e' ends of the bar 17 prevent the clamps 20 In order to provide the bottoms-jot the drawers with grooves I may use a-corrugated5 F igure 1 1s a perspective view of a filing sheet-material suchas corrugated cardboard This provides an inexwithwhich my partitions may be usedw Instead of the clamps 20 I may make ears integral with the'pl'ate 18 as shown in Figure 4:, In this form Ilmake the plates 18 in two sections and have these sections slidable on the bar,17.-;' The outer upper edge of each-plate is provided with ears21 and 22 which extend over and under the side rails 15. r H a Insteadof having-the clamps on the parti-' as shown "in'Figure' 5. In this form-ofthe invention I providejclamps 20" which slide 7 on side rails 15; The partition plates 26 may be stamped from a single sheet ofmaterial. Y
While I have shown my invention in connection with a filing cabinet, it of course is not limited to that use as it will readily lend itself to any system of boxes or drawers in which it is desired to have adjustable par titions. r I g It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that'various changes may be made in my device without departing from the spirit of the invention, and I therefore do not limit myself to what is shown in the drawings and described in the specification, but only as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my said inven- 10v Inorder to keep clamp.
tion, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: Y
1. In a filing cabinet having drawers therein, means for dividing the drawers into 5 a plurality of compartments comprising a notched rail secured upon each side of the drawer, anda plurality of partition plates havingtheir endsengaging the notches in the said rails and means for locking the plates to the rails, substantially as set forth.
2. In a filing cabinet shaving drawers therein, means for dividing the drawers into a plurality of compartments comprisinga notched rail secured upon each side of the drawer, a plurality of partition plates having their ends engaging the-notches of the said rails, and means for locking the said plates in the said notches, substantially asset forth. a 3. In a filing cabinet .having drawers therein, ineans'for dividing the drawers into a plurality of compartments comprising a rail having notches alongits upper side .Secured-upon each sideof the drawer, a bar having notches at each end adapted to engage in the notches in the said rail, partition plates secured to the saidbars, notches in the bottom of thedrawer into which said'platesmayengage and securing clamps slidably mounted on said bars to engagesaid rails and lockthe so bars in notches of the same, substantially as setforth. V r
i. In a filing cabinet having drawers therein, means for dividing the drawers into a plurality of compartments comprising a rail 3 having notches along its upper side secured 'upon each side of the drawer, a bar having notches at each end adapted to; engage inthe notches in thesaid rails, partition plates secured to the said bars, notches in the bottom as of the drawer into which said platesmay engage, and means for locking the said bar-1n the notches on the said-rails,substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof,'I have hereunto set my hand at I ashin-gton, District of B-olumbia,
this .19thday-of September, .A. D. nineteen -'hundred:.and'twenty-eight.
