' To all whom it may concern. Be it known that we, CHARLES 'R. FARGO and PAUL O. UNGER, citizens of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Mis'souri,
have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Posting Mechanisms, of which the following is a specification.
*Our invention relates to improvements 1n posting mechanisms.
The object of our invention is to provide a novel posting mechanism adapted for ma:
chine posting with which loose leaves may be easily and quickly manipulated and registered during the posting operation and reliably held in the registered positionuntil they are clamped between the two binder I members of an ordinary two post binder.
A. further object of our'invention is'the provision of a posting mechanism, whichis.
simple in construction, cheap to manufacture, durable, not liable to get out of order, and which is adapted for the registration of loose leaves which have lines of printed matter at right angles, to the binder.mem-
bers and which in use in the binder are turned to the right or-leftafter the manner of turning leaves of a book. q p

and each of which is provided in its upell per edge with a V-shaped notch 15, in which 1 is located one transverse portion 16, of an and the cover 8. The other portion 16 iii-'- clin-es downwardly and rearwardly and serves to support the lower side edges of loose leaves 41, placed on the cover 7, when the latter is mounted in aforwardly and downwardly inclined position in the notches 15, as shown in Fig. 1. The transverse portion 17 which registers the side edges of the leaves, is disposed parallel with the transverse bar 11, which positions endwise the binder member 3.

In order that the registeringportion 17 and its flange 18 may be moved longitudinally rearwardly fromthe registering position shownin Figs. 1, 2, ,3 and t, to enable the clamping member 1 to be forced to the clamping position, shown in Fig. 5, the members; 13 are longitudinally vmo-vably mounted on the side members 9 in any desired manner. In the structure illustrated, each side member 9 has attached to its upper edge, at the rear of the bar 11 a horizontal flatplate 19, Figs. 6 and 7 on which are mounted balls 20, which run in and support a longitudinal inverted V-shaped plate 21 which is secured to the lower edge of the adjacent side member 13. One flange of the plate 21 has an outwardly extending extension 22, which is adapted to en-. gage the lowerv side; of the adjacent plate 19 to retain the, side members 13 in their operative positions. For releasably locking the leaf support-' ing members 13 in the rearward position shown in Fig. 5, there is vertically'slidably mounted in a vertical h0le'25, provided in one of themembers 13, a vertical bolt 26,

hole in the adjacent plate 21 and is adapted to enter a vertical hole 27 in the adjacent plote 19, Fig. 5. Attached to the bolt 26 is a transverse pin 28, which extends outwardly adjacent member 13.
Mounted in the hole 25, is a vertical coil spring 30, Fig. 6, thelower end of which bears against the bolt'26, and the upper end of which bears against the adjacent member 13. The spring30 normally forces the bolt 26 downwardly to the locking position.
In order that the leaf supporting members may be locked in the registering position, shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4, the plate 19 is provided with a vertical hole 31, Fig. 5', adapted toreceive the bolt 26. j a

In the operation of] the invention, the

The rear, edge of the cover 8 rests against the bar 11.
The loose leaves 4 are then shifted. one by one in the posting operation to the top of the covert-8 and the clamping member 3 with the edges adjacent to the holes 5 resting against the flange 18 and the lower edges of the leaves resting against the forward side of the portion 17 of the registering plate. In this positionof the leaves, the holes 5v will register with the holes in. the member 3 which receive the posts 2,
and the printed lines 6 will be at right gagement with the clamping member 3,- as
shown in'Fig. 4, with the clamping mem: her 1 resting on top ofthe theregistering plate. I
,The bolt 26 is then lifted by means of the pin 28 to release the bolt from the plate 19, at which time, the leaf supporting memportion 17 of- 125 tightly against the member 3, the latter being at this time locked in the usual manner to the post 2. The leaves will thus be tightly held in the binder, after which the binder may be removed from the posting mechanism.
The bolt 26 may then be lifted to the unlocked position and the leaf support again moved forwardly to the registering position shown in Fig. 1, at which time the bolt 26 is released and enters the hole 31. The mechanism is now in position for another posting operation.
It will be noted that after the leaveshave been properly registered, the posts 2 may be inserted through the holes 5 and into engage ment with the clamping member'3, thereby holding the leaves in the proper position, so that the movable leaf support may be moved out of the registering position prior to the leaves being clamped, and that this operation may be effected with an ordinary two-post binder without the use of auxiliary locking pins or other auxiliary devices. With our improved posting device, loose leaves which have the lines of printed matter running at right angles to the clamping members of the binder, can be easily read and readily transferred to the registering position during the posting operation, and with either side of each leaf facing upwardly.
We do not limit our invention to the structure shown and described, as many modifications, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made without departing from the spirit of our invention.
What we claim is 1. In a posting mechanism, a support for a clamping member of a bindery-and leafregistering means arranged to engage two adjacent edges of each of a plurality of loose leaves carried on said member, said support having means for properly positioning said clamping member, said registering means being movable to and from the registering position in a direction parallel with the central vertical longitudinal plane of said clamping member.
2. In a posting mechanism, a support for a clamping member of a binder having means for longitudinally positioning said member, a leaf support movable on said support in a direction parallel with the central vertical longitudinal plane of said clamping member, and leaf-registering means carried by said leaf support and arranged toengage edges of loose leaves carried by said clamping one having. two posts adapted: to operatively member and movable withlsaicl leaf? support to and from the registering position. In a posting mechanism, the combination with two clamping members of a binder, one having two posts adapted to o-peratively engage the other member, of a support for said other member having means for longitudinally positioning said other member, a leaf support movable in a direction parallel with the central vertical longitudinal plane of said other member and arranged to hold the registering position and arranged to I engage two adjacent edges of each of a plurality. of leavesucarried by said other member, said posts being insertible through I the leaves carriedby said other member and into operative engagement with said other member while said positioning and regis-' tering means are in the operative positions.
5. In a posting mechanism, a support for a clamping member of a binder having means for longitudinally positioning said member, a leaf support movable on said support in a direction parallel with the central vertical longitudinal plane of said member, and a registering plate disposed at right angles to said member and carried by said 5 I port and arranged to engage one set of edges of loose leaves carried by said member and having a flange arranged to engage adjacent edges of the leaves carried by said membe1ne I 7.
