For purposes of illustrating my invention, I have shown my attaching clip as applied to the cap of a fountain pen, but this is by device has utility iii combination with any instrument which it is desired to retain in position against accidental displacement.V

The cap 10 is a hollow cylindrical meniber having a hollow portion or barrel 11, one end thereof 12 being open, the opposite end thereof 13 being closed, preferably as by means of a plug 14 securely held in positionfeither frictionally or by screw engaging means 15. For purposes of attachment to portions of the garment of a user, and to prevent accidental displacement of the instrumentality, I provide an attaching clip 16 having an offset resilient portion 17 provided with a camming knob 18 at one end thereof and an anchoring portion 19 at the other end thereof. yThe anchoring portion 19 is preferably made form-fitting as where the portion 10 is circular in cross-section, and has its terminal end 2O provided with an inwardly directed anchoring member 21 in the form of a tongue preferably disposed at right angles to the portion 19. There is also provided intermediate the length of escutcheon pin 22. To accommodate'the body portion 10 for engagement with the anchoring portion of the clip 16, I provide for the escutcheon pin 22, hole or orifice'23 and for the anchoring member, 'the engaging hole or orifice 24. 23 and 24 are spaced apart from each other so as to receive fairly snugly the pin 22 and the anchoring member 21. Preferably, however,'the hole 24 is made ksomewhat enlarged and with tapering walls, thus affording a large factor of error in the accuracy of machining the parts to accommodate those portions they are to receive.

For assembling the cap and the clip 16, the escutcheon pin 22 previously attached to the clip 16 is inserted, so that the anchoring member 21 and the pin 22 simultaneously enter the

openings

23 and 24 provided for each in the body member of the cap 10. Thereupon, the pin 22 is turned over or upset over the inner face of the barrel 11. This may be accomplished by means of a mandrel, or may be accomplished in a manner to be described hereinafter.

It will thus be observed that my clip as thus far described, serves efficiently as a fastening means, having suitable means in the form of the pin 22 for anchoring the clip longitudinally of the cap and means in the form of the inwardly turned tongue 21 for anchoring the clip laterally of the cap.

An important feature of the construction resides in that the clip member 16 may be made of highly spring tempered material whereas the escutcheon member 22 may be made of relatively soft, easily bendable material. This es'cutcheon member 22 may be positioned as by riveting, but preferably it is positioned by inserting a mandrel and turning over the protruding portion. This method of attachment has particular utility where the body member barrel 11 is made of plastic composition material.

ln order to more efficiently coordinate the longitudinal anchoring means and the lateral anchoring means of the clip, I further combine therewith means for causing the terminal end 2O and the pin 22 to resiliently coact with each otherl by oppositely disposed engaging forces. This I accomplish by providing an abutment for the inwardly directed tongue 21 serving to force the tongue 21 outwardly. In my preferred embodiment, I accomplish this by insertingl within the tubular portion a sleeve 25 which is frictionally or otherwise positioned and having' a lower shoulder 26 which forms the abutment for the co'mllemental member of the instrument, as for instance, the bent portion of the fountain pen. The sleeve 26 preferably has on its outer face a flattened portion 27 adapted to engage the inwardly protruding end of the tongue 21 at 28. Preferably, this flattened face 2.7 is diagonally disposed so that as it is positioned, it will serve to act as a wedge block against the tongue 21 gradually forcing it outwardly to an extent sufiicient to take up any play at the other point of attachn'ieint of the escutcheon pin.

It will be observed in this connection, that 'the sleeve 25 may serve to act as the means for bending the escutcheon member into fastening engagement, the diagonally disposed flattened wall 27 also serving efficiently to bind the terminal edge of the es# cutcheon member 22 between the inner wall 11l and .its out-er face.

It will be further observed that the wedge therefor.. means for surface 2T of the inner sleeve 25 serves to dispose the forces between the tongue 21 and the escutcheon pin 22 in opposite directions so that the clip 16 is resiliently and securely locked on the tubular member or barrel 11. Moreover, as the direction of movement of the ball point 18 is opposite to that of the terminal end 20, it will be observed tha't the forces are applied in a manner serving most efficiently their intended purpose for effecting secure resilient attachment of the clip to the pocket of a garment.

The lateral anchoring hole in this form as shown in 24 is preferably elongated and has slightly angularly disposed side walls 24, allowing` a'variable factor of error in the accuracy of machining the parts. It will also be observed that though T have described the abutment for the inwardly directed tongue 21 as being in the form of a separately positioned sleeve, this abutment may be integral with the body 11.

Tt will thus be observed that T have provided a fastening' clip having unusual simplicity of construction and involving a method of attachment to a pen or pencil cap requiring a minimum amount of operation and facility of manipulation in securing the same.

l/Vhile I have shown my invention in the preferred form, it will be apparent that many changes and. modifications may be made in the structure disclosed without departing from the spirit of the invention, Cefined in'the following' claims.

T claim:

1. The combination with Aa tubular mem ber of the character described, of a clip therefor made of highly tempered resilient material, means for anchoring the clip on the tubular member against longitudinal, and lateral displacement thereon comprising a single escutcheon pin able metal having its inner end bent into engz'rgen'ient with the inner wall of the tubular member for securing the clip tothe tubular member and a tongue formed by making a single bend in the top end of the clip inwardly and at right angles to the body of the clip, the said tongue being received by an orifice in the tubular member.

2. The combination with a tubular member of the character described. of clip anchoring the clip on the tubular member made of easily bend against longitudinal and iateral displacement thereon comprising a single escutcheon pin securing the clip to the tubular member and a tongue formed by making a single bend in the top end of the clip inwardly and at right angles to the body of the clip, the said tongue being received b-y an oritice in the tubular member, and means disposed within said tubular member active on sad escutcheon pin and tongue in opposite directions to hold said clip resiliently on the tubular member, the said means orming an abutment for the tongue to outwardly urge the same against the resilience of said clip and pin.

The combination with a tubular member of the character described, a resilient clip therefor, means for attaching the clip to the member comprising spaced anchoring means adapted to pass through openings in said member', one of said anchoring means including a bendable escutcheon pin passing through openings in said clip and member and turned over within the latter, the other of said anchoring means comprising an inwardly turned tongue projecting through said tubular member, and a sleeve arranged within said tubular' member forming an abutment for said tongue to outwardly urge the saine against the resilience of saidl clip and pin and forming a Wedge for said turned over portion of said pin to wedge the same against the walls of the tubular member.

5. The combination with a tubular member of the character described, a resilient clip therefor, means ior attaching the clip to the member comprising spaced anchoring means adapted to pass through openings in said member, one or" said anchoring means including an escutcheon pin passing through an opening in said clip and member and turned over within the same, the other of said anchoring means comprising an inwardly turned tongue integral with the clip, projecting through said tubular member, and an internal sleeve forming an abutment for said tongue to outwardly urge the same against the resilience of said clip and pin, the opening receiving said tongue having tapered walls accommodating variations in the distance or spacing between said anchoring means without permitting any lateral play or movement of the clip parts.
