Description

Patented Apr. 14, 1925,
UNITED STATES IGNA'rz SALZ, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
CLIP.
Application filed November 25, 1924, Serial No. 752,094.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, IGNATZ SALZ, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New York, in the county of NewYork and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clips, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in clips of the, character commonly employed on the caps of fountain pens and the barrels of fountain pencils'to retain these writing implements in the pocket. An object of the invention is topro-vid'e attaching means which will secure the clip firmly in place so that it cannot have any movement other than a bending movement at its free end tope-rmit the edge of a pocket to be forced between the clip. and the cap or implement.
The retaining means is designed to facilitate the assembly of the clip. and the pen cap. or pencil barrel and to considerably add to the attractive appearance of the finished product. By virtue of the use of my im-' proved retaining means, the application of the. clips may be facilitated and the expense thereof reduced. An escutcheon plate is preferably associated with and forms part.
of the securing means. Where the attaching means for the cllp is in the nature of a substantially U shaped bendable securing device the intermediate portion of which overlies a portion of the fixed end of the clip and the legs of which pass through the clip and cap and, are turnedv over inside the cap. the intermediate portion or the securing device will offer a convenient and conspicuous place for engraving monograms or the like. The ornamental appearance may be greatly enhanced by making the intermediateescutchcon portion of the securingdevice of some metal which contrasts sharply in color with the metal of the clip.
The invention may be more. fully under stood from the following description in con nection with the accompanying drawings, wherein--.
Figure 1 is a disassembled view showing the cap, clip. and securing device in elevation.
Figure 2 is a view in side elevation show ing the parts assembled;
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view on theline 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is an enlarged transverse section on the line 4-4: of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a view similar to FigureQ but illustrating a slight modification.
F or illustrative purposes I have shown the invention as applied to-the cap of a fountain pen but it will be evident that the attachment of the clip to a self-feeding pencil or any other similar hollow implement for writing or other purposes which is to be carried in the pocket is within the scope of the invention.
The cap 10 may be of conventional construction comprising a cylinder of molded composition having an open end internally threaded at 11 and having its opposite end closed by frictionally fitted plug 12. 13 represents the usual inner sleeve which is frictio-nally fitted or otherwise secured within the cap and affords a shoulder 14 engageable with some part of the pen barrel (not vature of the cap and an offset tapering portion 16* which terminates in .the usual camming knob 16 held against the exterior of thecap by the inherent resiliency of the metal of the clip. The securing device 18 which I employis of general U shape having its intermediate portion disposed longitudinally of the clip and having its legs passing through aligned openings 19 in the clip and cap. The intermediate portion of .the securing device may if desired, be longitudinal'ly curved in conformity with the curvature of the clip andbeveled at its edges, and may either be of the general rectangular shape shown; or of any ornamental If the securing device and clip be made of.
metals of contrasting colors, an attractive ornamental effect is had. For instance, the
securingdevice may be silver and the clipv be gold or vice versa, the exposed intermediate portion of the securing device contrasting with the clip and offering a'convenient surface upon which initials or other appropriate indicia may be engraved.
After the legs of the securing device have been turned over by ran'nning a mandrel. into the cap the inner sleeve 13 is inserted, this sleeve having a flattened grooved side 13 accommodating the turned over ends of the securing device, and effectively locking the securing device against being pried out.
It will be noted that by virtue of the two point engagement of the securing device, the clip is locked to the cap insuch a manner that it cannot have pivotal movement on the securing device as in the case where a single round rivet is used.
lVhile I prefer to use securing means in which the bendable legs are integral with the escutcheon plate the legs may be parts sepa ate from the plate, passing through the plate clip, and cap and turned under by a mandrel in the manner above described. The escutcheon plate, especially when of color contrasting with the clip, is a desirable feature, regardless of the manner in which the plate and clip are secured to'the cap.
To further enhance the ornamental ap-' pearance of the pen, the securing device may serve the double function of retaining the clip in place and clamping between the clip and securing device, a curved ornamental plate 20 which may be shaped as shown to faithfully simulate in connection with the front of the securing device, a bow.
It willthus be seen that there is herein described apparatus in which the several features of this invention areembodied, and which apparatus in its action attains the various objects of the invention and is well suited to meet the requirements of practical use. i
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently Widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent is:
l. The combination with a hollow cylindrical member and a spring retaining clip therfor, of means for securing the clip to the member including a pair of bendable securing devices passed through aligned openings in the clip and member, and turned over inside of the cylindrical member, and an escutcheon plate overlying the clip and retained in place by said securing devices.
2. The combination with a hollow cylindrical'member and a spring retaining clip therefor, of means for securing the clip to the member including a pair of bendable securing devices passed through aligned openings. in the clip and member and turned over inside of the cylindrical member, and an escutcheon plate overlying the clip and retained in place by said securing devices,
said escutcheon plate being integral withthe securing devices.
