Application filed December This invention relates in general to pump jacks especially adapted for use with wells and aims to provide a simple and durable type of pump jack which will apply straight vertical lift to the polish rod, thereby minimizing the wear on the stuffing box and precluding the breaking of the tubing.
A further object is to provide a device of this character having these advantages and which effectively transmits the motion from the walking beam of the pump jack to the polish rod and yet is entirely safe in operation and easy and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture and apply.
Other objects and advantages reside in certain novel features of the construction, arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in side elevation showing one embodiment of the invention,

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates generally a pump jack which has a standard 2 suitably braced, as at 3, and provided with a bearing 4: for a walking beam 5. The walking beam 5 may have a counterbalance 6 carried thereon and may be oscillated in any conventional manner. A polish rod is designated at 7. The present invention resides in the novel means of transmitting the motion from the walking beam to the polish rod and comprises a lift head, designated generally at 10, a cable 11 connected to the head and a clamp 12 secured to the polish rod and connected to the cable 11.

rected enlargement 13 at its upper end and 5 also having a rearwardly directed and centrally located web 1 1 integral therewith and with the enlargement 13. The web 1 1 is provided with a transverse opening 15 whereby it may be bolted or otherwise suitsecured to the walking beam, as indi cated at 16 in Figure 1. The enlargement 1S rests on the members making up the walking beam and the web 14 is located between these members. The plate 12 has its rear face abutting the forward ends of the member of the walking beam. In this way the head is firmly and rigidly mounted on the walking beam. The front face of the plate 12 is provided with a pair of spaced grooves 17 which extend from the bottom edge of the plate up and through the top thereof. The upper ends of the grooves 17 are connected by a semi-circular groove 18 provided in the top or upper end of the head 10. TO The cable 11 is doubled and has its bight portion received in the groove 18 and held in place by the walls of the groove. The two sections of the cable, designated at 18 extend through the groove 17 of the plate 12and the ends of the cable are suitably fastened to the clamp 12. In between the grooves 17 the plate 12 is provided with a lengthwise groove 19.. It is to be noted that the grooves 17 and 19 follow the arcuate or curved shape of the plate 12.
With this arrangement when the walking beam 5 is oscillated its arcuate motion will be transmitted into a straight line motion by the head 10 and cable 11 so that the polish 'rod 7 will be reciprocated in a straight line. This relieves the polish rod and tubing of severe stresses and also relieves the stuffing box through which the polish rod operates from wear. By relieving the stufling box of excessive wear leaking of oil, gas, or water is prevented.
As shown in Figure 1 the rearwardly directed enlargement of the curved body plate maybe rounded, as shown at 13 and the web may be extended rearwardly as indicated at 1 1 and provided with a plurality of laterally projecting lugs 25 on both of its sides,
The lugs 25 co-act With the Walking beam to aid the rivets 26 in securing the head and walking beam in assembly.
I claim A pump jack for use in reciprocating polish rods and including a Walking beam, a lifting head including a curved plate having a central rearwardly directed Web secured to the Walking beam between the mem- 1.e12,see
bers thereof, whereby to prevent lateral dis placement of the lifting head, said lifting head also having laterally extending projectiens engageable With the members of the Walking beam to prevent vertical displace ment of the lifting head, and a cable connected to the head extending over the curved plate and connected to the polish rod.
