This invention relates generally to stakes, and particularly to stake of the type adapted to be driven into the ground and to which a guy, or similar connecting element, may be attached, the predominant object of-the invention being to produce a metallic staire which is so constructed that the eien entscomprising said stake may be formed and said elements assembled by die operations, thus greatly reducing the cost of manufacturing said stake.
Stakes of the type disclosed herein are employed to secure tent ropes to the ground, but in most cases the stakes used for this purpose heretofore were either constructed of wood and as a consequence were easily broken, or were made of metal and were comparatively. expensive. Because of its durability and relatively low cost of man ufacture, the stake disclosed herein is well adapted for use as a tent stake, and the disadvantages encountered in connection with tent stakes formerly used are eliminated in the use of the stake disclosed herein.
Nith the foregoing and other objects in View, the invention comprises the novel con struction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying rawings, wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention. However, it is to be understood that the invention comprehends changes, variations and modifications which come within the scope of the claim hereunto appended- V Fig. I is a perspective of my improved stake.

Fig. IV is an enlarged cross section taken approximately on line IVIV of Fig. 11, and looking in the direction indicated by the arrow.
In the drawing A designates my improved stake which comprises a body portion B and a retaining element C. The body portion B of my improved stake tapers toward the lower end thereof to facilitate driving the stake into the ground, and said body portion B is approximately \l' -shaped in cross section, as shown in Fig. IV, whereby added rigidity is given to said body portion. The body portion B tapers in two directions toward its lower end; in other words, when yiewed in front elevation said body portion is tapering as shown in Fig. H, and also when viewed in side elevation the wings B ofsaid body portion are shown to be substantially wider at the upper portion of the body portion B than they are at the lower end of said body portion.
The retaining element C ofmy improved stake preferably comprises a short section of rod bent to provide a pair ofportions C, which are arranged approximately parallel with but offset from each other, and an integral intermediate portion C which connects said portions G? together. The body portion B is provided with an aerture I) adjacent to its upper end whic is intended for a purpose to be hereinafter set forth.
In the assembled stalre one of the portions C of the retaining element C is arranged at the upper portion of the body portion B of the stake, and the material at said upper portion of said body portion is drawn around said portion C by means of suitable dies so that a cylindrical portion B is provided the wall of which closely embraces said portion C of said retaining element as shown in Fig. 1. Extended outwardly from and formed integral with the wall of the cylindrical portion B is a pair of parallel flanges B, said flanges being capable of being drawn together by dies to cause the wall of the cylindrical portion B to contact firmly with the face of the portion C within said cylindrical portion. The flanges B are continuations of the edge portions of the wings B of the body portion B, as shown in Fig. I, there being outwardly curved portions B WfllCll connect said flanges with said wings. The intermediate portion C" of the retaining element C is extended through the aperture D, and the portion G of said retaining element associated with the portion G thereof which is arranged within the cylindrical portion B is arranged parallel with and spaced apart from the outer face of the body portion B. This arrangement provides the stake with a hook beneath which the guy or tent rope may be looped and which will prevent'said guy or tent rope fronrbeing tion G of the retaining element, may also disconnected from the stake by being drawn over the top thereof.
The frietionai grip between the wall of the cylindrical portion B and? the portion of the retaining element C located therein, together with the fact that said retaining element passes through the aperture D, would in all probability be sufiicient to prevent any movement of said retaining element relative to said body portion, but as an added precaution I may provide the portion C of the retaining element C which is located within said cylindrical portion with oppositely disposed depressions E into which portions of the wall of the cylindrical portion are forced in any suitable manner. In this way the cylindrical portion and the retaining element are positively locked together.
From the foregoing it is plain that the body portion of the stake disclosed herein may be stamped out and shaped by die portions, and also that the retaining element C of my improved stake may be shaped by die operations. Also it is apparent that the assembling of said elements to produce the completed stake, that is, the shaping of the cylindrical portion B around the porlie accomplished by die operations.
In addition to functioning as a socket which receives a portion of the retaining eiement C, the cylindrical portion B of the body portion B provides the stake with a durable head portion which is capable of withstanding heavy blows when the stake is being driven into the ground.
I claim:
A stake comprising a body portion having an end portion approximately V-shaped in cross section adapted to be driven into the ground, a retaining element, an end portion of said body portion being shaped to provide a cylindrical wall having out wardly extended flanges formed integral therewith, a portion of said retaining element being arranged within said cylindrical wall, and means whereby said retaining element is rigidly fixed to said cylindrical wall, said retaining element being extended through an aperture in said body portion and being shaped to provide a hook arranged adjacent to the outer face of said body portion.
