Description

N'. A. ORMES.
BARREL CLEAT.
APPLICATION FILED MAR- 9. I92]- 1,395,72 Patented Nov. 1, 1921.
UNITED STTE NORMAN A. (DB/MES, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
BARREL-CLEAT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nev. 1, i921 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NORMAN A. ORMES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel-Cleats, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to barrel cleats of the kind shown and described in my United States Patent No. 1,340,075, of May 11,1920, and has for its object to provide certain improvements in the construction therein disclosed.
According to my prior patent, the cleat is formed from a single strip of metal having the greater portion of its length between its ends channel-shaped with the sides of the channels extending toward the barrel. The channel-shaped part is truss shaped, provid ing a central portion and inclined end portions, which end portions are channeled throughout the greater portion of their length, but terminate in fiat portions bent to form hooks extending over the edge of the barrel and between the hoop and the barrel. A nail passed through the hoop and hook portions into the barrel serves tohold the cleat in position. The hook portion being flat and having squared ends render them liable to be bent, especially when forcing the square end of the hook between the barrel hoop and the barrel.
According to the present invention, I provide a strengthening rib for the hook and preferably point the end of the hook. The strengthening rib gives rigidity to the de vice at the place where they were heretofore weakest, and enables the device to be hammered into position on the barrel receptacle, while the point on the hook facilitates the driving of the device into position.
My invention may be understood by reference to the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 shows a side elevation of a cleat made in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 shows a top view thereof;
Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the cleat;
Fig. 4; indicates a section on line IVIV of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 represents a cross section of a portion of a keg or barrel with a cleat embodying my invention applied thereto, showing just a portion of the hook in section; and
Fig. 6 is a plan view of Fig. 5.
In the drawings, 5 indicates the central portion of the body which is channel-shaped in cross section. the sides of the channel forming strengthening flanges, and 6 are inclined or angularly disposed end portions of the body, which portions are also channelshaped in cross section. Their outer ends, however, are substantially flat, the flanges being terminated, as indicated at 7, and form depending hooks 8, the lower end of which hooks are preferably pointed, as at 9. Extending from a point 10 on the portions 6 of the body and overlapping the channeled part thereof, is a rib or corrugation 11 which extends along the hook portion 8 and terminates in advance of the end of the hook but adjacent thereto. The portion of the rib on the depending hook is preferably tapered, as indicated.
The channel-shaped cross section of the body gives it rigidity between the hook portions, while the rib 11 gives rigidity to that portion which is not channel-shaped, and which, being formed of relatively thin sheet metal, is otherwise relatively flexible. By reason of the rib beginning at a point in advance of where the channel-shaped portion is entirely flattened out or terminated, the body of the cleat is reinforced throughout substantially its entire length. The inclined portions 6 give the body a truss shape, which is highly desirable in a device of this kind, as described in my patent above referred to.
The cleat described in the present invention is applied to the barrel or other receptacle in much the same way as the cleat shown in my prior patent. The ends 9 of the hooks, being pointed, may be wedged between the hoop and the barrel A, as shown in Fig. 5, and forced into position until portion 5 of the cross strip engages the head B- of the barrel. The provision of the reinforcing rib 11 enables the hooks to be driven into position without danger of bending them. The cleat is then secured in position by nails 0 passing through the hoop, the hook and into the barrel and barrel head.
When secured in position, the cleat embodies all the advantages disclosed in my said prior patent, and provides the additional feature of strengthening the cleat, so that it is not liable to bend, especially at point 12 Where the hook engages the edge of the barrel by reason of outward pressure on head B.
I claim as my invention:
1.. A barrel cleat comprising a body having strengthening flanges extending therealong, said body terminating at each end in a substantially fiat hook portion, and a strengthening rib formed in each of the hook portions. 2. A barrel cleat comprising a body having strengthening flanges extending therealong, said body terminating at each end in a substantially fiat hook portion, which hook is bent over to extend along the side of a barrel, and a strengthening rib extending along the hook to a point on the flanged body in advance of Where the flanges terminate.
A; barrel cleat comprising a body having strengthening flanges extending there along, said body being bent to form a truss, depending hooks on the end of the body, a strengthening rib extending from the flanged portion of the body to a point adjacent the end of the hook, said hook being formed with a point. r
4. A barrel cleat comprising a body having strengthening flanges extending therealong, said body being bent to form a truss, books on the end of the body, which hooks extend beyond the portion of the body having strengthening flanges and Which are bent at an angle to the body to extend along the sides of a barrel, and a strengthening rib extending from the flanged portion of the body over the point Where the hooks are bent and along the hooks.
5. A barrel. cleat comprising a body having strengthening flanges thereon Which extend longitudinally thereof andterminate short of the ends, depending hooks on the ends of the body beyond the strengthening flanges and a strengthening rib extending 1" rom the flanged portion of the body along the hooks to a point adjacent the ends thereof, the flange on the depending portion of the hooks being tapered. p
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of a Witness.
