Description
W. D. GiLES ATTACHMENT FOR WALKING BEAMS Filed June 4 1923 gwmntoe Patented Sept. 16, 1924.
UITE
WALTER I). GILES, OF LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA.
ATTACHMENT FOR WALKING BEAMS.
Application filed June 4,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER D. Gums, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leesville, in the parish of Vernon and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in an Attachment for l/Valking Beams, of which the following is a specification. V
The present invention relates to an attachment for walking beams used for op eration of well rods and has for its principal object to provide a device which will compensate for the are described by the end of the walking beam when in operation so that the reciprocatory motion imparted to the well rods will be in practically if not entirely the same exact alignment.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a device of this nature which is simple and eflicient in construction, reliable in operation, inexpensive to manufacture, durable, and well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description progresses, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawing Figure 1 is an elevation showing a portion of a walking beam with my attachment thereon,
Figure 2 is an end view thereof,
Figure 3 is a detail perspective thereof,
Figure 4 is a detail section through the upper portion of the rocker, and
igure 5 is a similar View taken at right an les to that shown in Figure 4.
Feferring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that 1 designates a walking beam of conventional construction to which my attachment is fixed. This attachment consists of a boxing or block 2 which is substantially H-shaped in cross section or end elevation so as to provide an upper chan nel 3 and a lower channel 4. The lower channel 4 is to receive the end of the walking beam 1 and the block is attached securely thereto by suitable fastening elements 5. A rocker 6 is disposed within the upper channel 3. This rocker 6 includes an ar cuate bottom face 7 and side walls 8 which converge upwardly toward each other so that the upper end of the rocker is smaller 1923. Serial No. 643,475.
than the lower end or face 7. 'This upper end is countersunk and the bottom face 9 thereof is arcuate for holding thelubricant. A roller 10 is journaled in the upperend of the rocker 6 and is provided with a central annular groove 11. The upper edges 12 of the block 2 are curved or rounded.
The coupling 14 may be of any preferred construction but it is my intention to use the coupling which I have shown and described in detail in my application bearing Serial Number 629,645 filed April 3, 1923. This coupling includes. the cable 16 which in the present arrangement is adapted to be trained over the roller 10 and engage the V groove 11 thereof. This cable 16 also bears on the rounded edges 12 of the block 2.
From a consideration of the drawing it will be seen that as the walking beam 1 is operated the coupling 14 will move in a vertical line and that, therefore, there will be no bending of the polish rod or the sucker rods in the well. The pull upon these rods Willbe direct and therefore considerable friction will be overcome and at the same time the life of the rods will be greatly lengthened.
I have, in the present instance, shown and described the preferred embodiment of the attachment which will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, and it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modification in Various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its ad vantages.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is 1. An attachment of the class described including a block, a rocker mounted on the block, and a roller journaled in the rocker.
2. An attachment of the class described including a block having achannel therein, a rocker mounted in the channel of the block, and a roller journaled inthe rocker.
3. An attachment of the class described including a block having a channel therein, a rocker mounted in the channel of the block, and a roller journaled in the rocker, said roller being provided with an annular groove.
4. An attachment of the class described including a block of H-shaped structure in cross section providing a lower channelfor reception of a walking beam and an upper channel, a rocker disposed in the upper channel, and a roller jOLiI'HillEd in said for attaching the block securely to the WalklOCkQIH ing beam, 2. rocker disposed in the upper 5. In combination, a Walking beam, channel, and a roller journaied in the rocker.
