Description

ALExANnEE sINzHErMEE, 0E rHrLAnELP'HrA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPRovEm'ENT IN sHlRrf-Bosoms.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 161,286, dated March 23, 1875; application filed October 10, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER SINZ- HEUER, of the city and county of Philadelphia and the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shirt-Fronts 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the nature thereof, sufcient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully understand, make, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making part of this specification, in which- Figures l and 2 are face views of the shirt-front embodying my invention. Figs. 3 and 4L are top-edge views, respectively, of Figs. l and 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists in janus-faced and reversible plaits at the front of a shirt-bosom at the sides of the center plait, said side plaits always constituting part of the visible bosom.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a shirt-front, which may be open in front or back, as desired, and is constructed with the center C and side plaits B, which are adapted to fold on the center@ or the portion C aside of said center. These plaits are constructed with two faces, a, and Zi, which may be plain or ornamcnted, and either face may be exposed by folding the plait inwardly or outwardly.
In Fig. l the plaits are folded outwardly, or against the portion of the shirt-front aside of the center C, so that the faces c of the plaits are exposed, and the shirt-front consists of the face a G c.
In Fig. 2, the plaits are folded inwardly, or against the center C of the shirt, and partly or entirely covering said center, so that the faces b of the plaits are exposed, and the face of the shirt-front may consist of the face b b; or, if a portion of the center C is uncovered, of the face b G b.
The stitching or needle work of the plaits may be plain or ornamental, and the two faces of each should be properly starched and ironed.
It will be seen that either face may be ex posed or worn, so that two styles of shirt= front will be produced in one.
When the center C is soiled or mussed, the plaits are folded over and on the center, and thus they cover the same, whereby the clean faces b of the plait are in front and will be worn.
Should the faces b first be worn, and then become soiled or mussed, the plaits B are turned back from the center G, and folded on the portion C of the shirt aside of the center C, and thus have the face of the front consist of the face a C a, which is clean and serviceable.
It will also be seen that a shirt or shirtfront, so constructed, will render the saine service as two shirt-fronts 5 but it requires but half of the number of washings, starchings, and ironings; consequently the shirt-front will last longer than usually.
The plaits B always constitute part of the visible bosom. Besides this the two faces of the plaits form variety in the appearance of the front, and thus increase the utility of the folding plaits.
The improvement is equally applicable to xed shirt-bosoms, shirtfronts, dickeys, &c.
I am aware that it is not new to construct a bosom that may be covered and uncovered.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is
The shirt-bosom, having janus-faced and reversible plaits B B, constructed and arranged substantially as described.
