Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL IV. PI-IELPS, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN TRAVELlNG-TRUNKS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 16,125, dated November 25, 1856.
To all whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL W. PHELPs, of Cincinnati, I-Iamilton county, Ohio, have invented new an d useful Improvements in Traveling-Trunks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this speciiication.
My invention has for its objects greater accessibility to and more compact and convenient storage of the contents of a traveling trunk or valise than is practicable with the ordinary article.
Travelers are well aware of the frequentlyrecurringinconvenience of rummaging for an article buried among a mass ot' garments, books, the., and this inconvenience is especially felt when access is wanted during the im mediate hurry of travel. These facts being presumed admitted, I will proceed to describe the devices by which, while possessing more than all the security and adaptation to travcling of the trunk, I enable each article to be orderly packed in its appropriate place and yet be accessible at a moments requirement.
In the annexed drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a trunk formed on my plan. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of a drawer.
The trunk, unlike those commonly in use, opens at. the side by a pair of side lids or doors ab, which may each be provided, as
represented, with a distinct lock Whose bolt c engages in a suitable recess d in a horizontal partition e. This partition is supported by and made fast to the trunk ends. The spaces above and below the partitions e are further subdivided by horizontal partitions fg. Three of the four compartments thus formed are .fitted with drawers h tj, the remaining compartment lo being left open for the storage of shoes, soiled linen, dac. The square space p between the vertical partition l and the adjacent trunk end is intended for the protection of a hat or bonnet and will dispense altogether with the necessity of a separate receptacle for such articles.
m is a cover tting loosely the drawer, and which, being fastened down by a strap n and buckle o, serves to hold the contents properly to their places, whether the drawers be full or partly empty.
I claim as new and of my invention- The arrangement, substantially as described, of drawers, partitions, and side lids or doors for the combined purposes of security, orderly arrangement, and accessibility of all the contents in a traveling-trunk, as above set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto set my hand before two subscribing witnesses.
SAML. IV. PHELPS.
