UNITED STATES PATENT CLARENCE R. DAVIS OF DETROIT, MICHIGN ASSIGNOR TO THE DAVIS TOOL & EN- GINEERING COMPANY, 01 DETROIT, MICHIGAN, A. COBPOBATION'OE MICHIGAN.
GABMENT-HANGER-SUPPORTING DEVICE.
Application filed April 10, 1988. Serial No. 101,917.
My invention relates to a supporting device for garment hangers shown inthe accompanying drawin s and more art cularly described in thefol owing speci cation and claims.
The primary object of the present mvention is to provide a device constructed from one ieee of metal presenting a ver neat and finis led appearance and especia ly strong and rigid 1n construction.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device punched from-a single sheet of metal in which the hanger supporting arm is not only into ral with the bracket plate at the end of t e latter, but isof trussed format on thereby providing a very rigid pro ect1ng arm which is further strengthened by in tegral lugs at the end and top of the supporting" arm, extending through a slotted opening in the bracket plate and riveted to the latter...
A further object of the invention is-to pro vide a depression in the bracket plate surrounding the slotted opening through which the lugs of the supporting arm project that the riveted head. of the lugs may not extend beyond the surrounding wall of the bracket plate and thereby interfere with its attach ment to a door or other support.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds the invention further resides in the details of construction hereinafter :described and claimed it being understood that changes may be made in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed without departin from the spirit of the same.
In the fication:

drawings accompanying this speci- Figure 2 is a perspective view of the de- Figure 5 is a fragmentary horizontal sec-' tional view taken on or about line 5-5 of Figure 2 showing a recess formed in the end tend upwardl or bracket plate to receive the lugs at the end of the arm and which extend through said end plate,-the rivet head being below the surrounding raised portion of the bracket wall. 7
Referring now to the letters of reference placed upon the drawings:
A indicates the device struck from a sheet metalblank A as the latter would appear upon leaving the blanking die and prior to the operation of the forming die. The bracket supporting end B is bent transversely-see dotted line b-by the forming die to the direction taken by the supporting arm Cthe latter part of the blank being bent longitudinally dotted lines b in Figure 3. A hollow triangular shaped Wall 0 with the upstanding saw-toothed edges D, D of the blank in abutting relation preferably spot welded together, is thus formed-see Figures 2 and 4. The inclined portions C C of the arm exportion F an serve as a truss giving great strength and rigidity to the arm and abutting upstanding saw-toothed portions D, D,- which are preferably spot welded together The outer projectin ends G, G of the folded arm are flattened %y the forming die so that both surfaces impinge at the extreme end which are also preferably spot welded. The blank at the opposite end of the supporting arm is formed with projecting lugs H, H which extend through a slotted opening J formed in a depressed portion I of the bracket plate, the lugs being riveted following insertion in the plate below the. surrounding wall of the bracket that it may not interfere with the attachment of the device to a door or other support.
Attention is directed to the factthat the relatively wide angular shaped end of the hollow supporting arm, abutting as it does against the end of the bracket, adds greatly to the strength and rigidity of the device.
By inclining the upper edge ofthe supportingarm, any of the several hangers may be readily selected and removed when desired ;and when the same are to be replaced, it will be at once apparent where a resting place on the supporting arm may be found for the hanger.
It will be obvious that the notches in the supporting arm serve to maintain the hangers in spaced relation to each other and that as'indicated by the inclined from the central horizontal they also prevent thehangers from slipping off the end of the arm even though the garments suspended from each hanger may be of a very bulky character.
Having thus described my lnvention what I claim is:
1. A deviceof' the character described constructed from a single strip of sheet metal comprising a supporting arm having a relatively broad base adjacent the supporting end of the arm with side walls inclined upwardly from the base toward each other and with abutting vertical upstanding notched marginal edges. and a bracket supporting portion integral with the arm and bent at right angles to the latter, said bracket por tion slotted to receive lugs integral with the adjacent ends of the projecting'arm, said lugs being riveted tothe bracket.
2. A device of the character described constructed from a single strip of sheet metal comprising a supporting arm having a relatively broad base with side walls inclined from the base toward each other and thence vertically, with their upstanding marginal edges notched and in abutting relation, and a perforated bracket portion integral with the base of the arm and bent at right angles to the latter, said bracket having a recessed portion slotted to receive lugs projecting from the adjacent ends of the upstanding marginal edges of the supporting arm and riveted to the bracket below the surrounding raised portions of the bracket wall.
3. A device of the character described comprising an arm and an integral bracket supporting member, said arm having a relatively broad base adjacent the bracket supporting member with side walls tapering toward the outer end of the arm, said side wallsspaced apart and inclined upwardly and inwardly from the base toward each other and thence vertically in contacting relation, their adjacent upstanding marginal edges being notched to receive the books of a coat hanger, the spaced walls at the forward end Of the arm being in closed contacting relation; said supporting bracket member being slotted to receive lugs projecting from the abutting ends of the Walls of the arms and riveted to the bracket supporting member.
In testimony whereof, I sign this specification.
CLARENCE R. DAVIS.
