IMPROVEMENT IN SUSPENDER, BELT, OR GARTER FASTENINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 161 ,071, dated March '23, 1875; application filed December 21,1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ALBERT 0. SMITH, of Fort Madison, in the county of Lee and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspender, Belt, or Garter Fastening; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a view of my improved fastening as applied to a suspender. Fig.2 is a detached View of the plate, and Fig. 3 a'verticalsection of the locking-band.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The purpose of this invention. is to provide a fastening for suspenders and belts simple in construction, and a fastening that is capable of being formed by simply stamping the same from sheet-brass or other metal by suitable dies, thereby greatly lessening the cost in their manufacture.
My invention, therefore,.consists in a fastening composed of two parts-viz., a plate having a turned-down lip or flange at one end, and slotted at the other, and a locking-band consisting of a strip of metal with indentations formed therein, the ends of the strip being bent around, the purpose of which will be hereinafter more fully described.
A B in the drawings represent the two parts which compose my fastening, and may be formed of metal. The part B is in form of a narrow band, the ends bent around as shown at b b, which embrace and hold the plate A upon the suspender D. This band B, which I term a locking-band, has small indentations c c c, to prevent the band from slipping when in place. The plate A has a projecting flange or l-ip, a, which presses against the front side of the suspender D after the locking-band B is brought down in place, making a perfectly secure fastening, and one that will not in any manner injure or cut the suspender. The plate A has a tongue, 0, commencing at the point at, and gradually increasing in width, and is provided with a narrow opening, 0, through which the ends of the strap E pass after being brought around the upper part of thetongue. If desired, in place of the tongue (3, a ring may be attached to the plate A, and the straps sewed or fastened on with eylets.
To operate the fastening the band B is first placed on the suspender, after which the tongue 0 or lower part of the plate A is slipped down between the ends b b of the band until the plate is tightly pressed against the suspender, forming a perfect fastening. When it is desired to adjust it, the plate A is shoved up from behind the ends I) b, when the lockin band B is slipped to the desired position upon the suspender, and the plate A replaced. Though I have shown my fastening as applied to suspenders, Ido not wish to be understood as confining myself thereto, as it may be equally applicable to belts, (to.

what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The plate A, having the turneddown lip or,
