My present invention relates in general to valve devices, and more particularly, to drain valve structures, and has special relation to the provision of an improved form of packless drain valve mechanism wherein the valve 7 itself 18 located within the vessel or cavlty to be drained.
Fluid drain valves, in which the valve is located externally of the container to be times 1n open communication with such container and that the valve body on the one hand has to be made sufficiently strong to withstand any pressure occurring in the latter; and on the other hand such body being exposed to the weather is subjectto atmospheric variations with the frequent result that when the temperature drops sufficiently the fluid contained in the valve body may freeze and burst it.
When, however, the valve itself is disposed inside of the container to be drained,
. it is not so subject to failures on account of thecircumstances rec1ted, smce there is ordinarily no fluid in the valve body save at the time the container is being drained.
Moreover, in drain valves of both types, as heretofore constructed in practicable man ners known to me' the stem which carries the valve operating means has been subject to fluid and the action of fluid pressure at all times, when closed, thereby necessitating the provision of means for packing the valve stem'against leakage in order to keep the valve structure tight against the escape of fluid present within the contamer.
The principal objects of my present invent-ion, therefore, are the provision of an improved form of packless valve device; the provision of an improved form of valve device wherein the valve proper is disposed interiorly of the container to be drained and the operating means therefor is disposed exdrained, present certain disadvantages in a that the inlet port of the valve body is at all teriorly of suchcontainer; the provision of' container; the provision of an improved,
located as to be at all times within the discharge boundaries of the seat and that such attachment may be flexible; the provision of an improved form of valve device character ized by the fact thatthere is no'fiuid pressure within the valve body save when the valve is open to establish communication within the container with which it operates; together with such other objects as may hereinafter appear. i
In attaining the stated objects and certain low pointed out, I have provided a construc tion, one embodiment of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein Figure l is a front elevational view of a valve embodying my present improvements; Figure 2 is a sectional view of the device of Figure l as taken on the line 22 thereof; Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2; and
- Figures 41: and 5 are front and side elevational views of a modified form of structure. l/Vhile my present improvements are to a great extent applicable to either of the types of valves referred to, I find them especially applicable to the type in which the valve itself is disposed inside of the container to be drained, and l have therefore illustrated it as so designed to the end that the stem carryingthe valve operating means maybe subject to fluid and the action of fluid pressure only when the valve is opened to establish communication with the interior of the container.
Furthermore, while valves embodying my present improvements are obviously of utilityfor, a wide range. of purposes, I have, for
convenience of illustration, shown them embodied in types of valve structures which may be utilized as blow-0H valves for railway locomotive boilers for which purposes they are peculiarly useful.
Referringnow. more particularly to Figures 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings, it will be observed that l have here shownfa formof valve, device wherein the valve bodyTlOis held against the casing 11 of a locomotive boiler by means of bolts 13 passing through said casing 11 and lugs 14 formed on the said body 10.

The inlet 16 is closable'hy means of a valve 18 of a disc type arranged within thecasing additional benefits and advantages'to be bethat the valve may be held closely against its seat by means of a spring 2%, arranged 1n said housing 23, one end of the spring 2 1 being attached to said pin 22 and the opposite end attached to a hook 25 carried on such stem 20.
The stem 20 is supported intermediate its ends upon a pintle 26 passed into one side of the casing from the exterior as indicated at 2,7, the inner end being disposed in a socket 28 in the opposite side of the casing.
At its end opposite to the valve 18, the
' stemQO is provided with a conical gear segment 29 with which a conical pinion 31 meshes. The pinion is supported at its inner ends by extensions 32 and socketed in the valve body 10. v
For operating the valve 18, the pinion 31 has an extension 3% carried in a removable plug-socket 36 and is provided with a terminal 37 upon which an operating lever 38 may be secured. An opening 30 corresponding to the situation of the pinion 31 is closed by a plug 34. When it is desired to so place the lever 38 as to arrange it for left hand operation, the pinion 31 may be placed in the opening 30 for engagement with the pinion 29, upon removal of the plugs 35 and 36.
The pinions 29 and 31 are preferably made of conical form in order to translate the rotation of the stem in one plane to the plane in which the operating lever 38 must move.
Referring now more particularly to the variant embodiment of my present invention illustrated in Figures i and 5, it will be observed that in this form of construction the valve body 10 is provided with lugs 14- which may be fastened against the casing 11 by meansof suitable bolts. I
lVithin the valve body is arranged a passage 15, having an inlet port 16, and a discharge terminal 17. The inlet is closable ,by means of a valve 19 which is mounted on a stem 20 and secured thereto as indicated At the right-hand end of the stem 20 (see Figure 5) there is threaded thereon to a collar 40 upon which is formed a pinion 41 meshing with a gear segment 42 formed on the end of an operating handle 38" piv- 2% encircling said stein 20 and abutting at its left-hand end against the interior of said casing 10" and at its right-hand end against said collar l0 adjacent the point 45, and thereby holding the valve 18" at all times firmly against its seat on said inlet port 16.
Those who are skilled in the art to which my present invention pertains will appreciate that one of the great advantages of the flexible connection between the valve disc and the stem by which it is operated, resides in the fact that triction between the valve and its seat is minimized, and consequently not only does the valve operate more easily but any tendency towards scoring of the valve disc or rounding oil of the seatis largely reduced and ensuantleakage prevented.
lt will also to apparent that I have provided a flexible connection between the valve stem, the valve itself, and the operating handle, which will permit independent seating of the valve disc without relation to the position of the stem.
Having thus described my invention and illustrated its use, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A. packl-ess valve device comprising, in combination, a casing having a passageway and an external seat, a valve adapted to enthereon, means extending through said passa 'eway for moving the valve laterally relatively to its seat, and a flexible connection between said valve and said moving means and tending to hold the valve on its seat.
2. A packless valve device comprising, in combination, a casing having a passageway and an external. seat, a valve adapted to engage thereon, a stem extending through said passageway for operating said valve, means for laterally moving said stem and thereby moving said valve laterally relatively to its seat, and a flexible connection between said valve and stem and tending to maintain the valve on its seat.
3. A packless valve device comprising, in combination, a casing having a passageway and an external seat, a valve adapted to engage thereon, meanslaterally movable in said passageway for moving the valve laterally relatively to the axis of its seat, and a spring" connection between said valve and said moving means.

A packless valve device comprising, in combination, a casing having an inlet forming a valve seat, an external valve adapted to seat on said inlet, a stem for operating said valve. means for moving said stem laterally relative the casing and thereby moving said valve laterally relatively to its seat, and means tending to maintain the valve on its seat comprising a flexible connection between said valve and stem.
7. A packless valve device comprising, in combination, a casing having an inlet forming a valve seat, an external valve adapted to seat on said inlet, means for moving the valve in a rectilinear lateral path relatively to its seat, and a spring connection between said valve and said moving means.
8. A packless valve device comprising, in
combination, a casing having an inlet forming a valve seat, an external valve adapted to seat on said inlet, a stem for operating said valve, means for moving said stem in a lateral plane relative the inlet and thereby moving said valve laterally relatively to its seat, and a spring connection between said valve and stem.
9. A packless valve device comprising, in combination, a casing having an inlet forming a valve seat, a swinging disc valve adapted to seat on said inlet, means for moving the valve across the seat, and a flexible connection between said valve and said moving means.
10. A packless valve device comprising, in combination, a casing having an inlet forming a valve seat, a swinging disc valve adapted to seat on said inlet, a stem for operating said valve, means for moving said stem and thereby moving said valve across the seat, and a flexible connection between said valve and stem.
11. A packless valve device comprising, in combination, a casing having an inlet forming a valve seat, a swinging disc valve adapted to seat on said inlet, means for moving the valve across the seat, and a spring connection between said valve and said moving means.
12. A packless valve device comprising, in combination, a casing .having an inlet forming a valve seat, a swinging disc valve adapted to seat on said inlet, a stem for operating said valve, means for moving said stem and thereby moving said valveacross the seat, and a spring connection between said valve and stem. 7
13. A packless valve device comprising, in combination, acasing having a seat, a
. imparting disc valve adafljed to seat thereon, neans for moving thegvalve relatively to its seat, and a flexible connection between said operating means andsaid valve, the point of attachment of said connection to the valve disc being so located as to be at all times within the discharge boundaries of the valve seat.

A packless valve device comprising,- in combination, a casing having a seat, 'a disc valve adapted to seat thereon, means for moving the valve relatively to its seat, and a spring connection between said operating means and said valve, the point of attachment of said connection to the valve disc being so located as to be at all times within the discharge boundaries of the valve seat. 1

A packless valve device comprising, in combination, a casing having a seat, a valve adapted-to seat thereon, means for moving the valve relatively to its seat, a. flexible connection between the valve seat and said'moving means, and gearing for imparting movement from said moving means through said flexible connection to said valve. 7

Adrain valve for containers comprising, in combination, a valve body in fixed relation to the container and having an inlet port within the container, a laterally swinging valve carried by said body and disposed within thecontainer and arranged to be pressed against the inlet port by pressure within the container, and a valve operating means disposed exteriorly ot the container and yieldingly connected to the valve, all so arranged that said valve body is free from internal pressure except when the valve is open to establish communication between it and thecontainer.
18. A drain valve for containers com prising, in combination, a valve body in fixed relation to the container and having an inlet port within the container, a swinging disc valve carried by said body and disposed within the container and arranged to be pressed against the inlet port by pres sure within the container, and valve operating means disposed exteriorly of the container and yieldingly connected to the valve, all so arranged that said valve body is free from internal pressure except when the valve is open to establish communication between it and the container.
19. A drain valve for containers comprising, in combination, a valve .body in fixed relation to the container and having an inlet port within the container, a valve carried by said body and arranged within the container 'to be pressed against the inlet port by pres sure within the container, a valve operating means disposed exteriorly of the container, and a substantially universal flexible connection between said valve and operating means, all so arranged that said valve body is free from internal pressure except when the valve is open to establish communication between it and the container.
20. A drain valve for containers comprising, in combination, a valve body in fixed relation to the container and having an inlet port within the container, a valve carried by said body and arranged within the container to be pressed against the inlet port by pressure within the container, a valve operating means disposed exteriorly of the container, and a substantially universal spring connection between said Valve and operating means, all so arranged that said valve body is free from internal pressure except when the valve is open to establish communication be tween it and the container.
21. The combination with a receptacle containing fluid under pressure, of a valve cas ing having a passage whose inlet is disposed within the receptacle and provided with a valve seat, a swinging valve on the casi within the receptacle and operable to eng said seat, operating means for the valve e tending outside the casing, and yielding means connecting the valve to said operating means and normally tending to yieldingly force said valve against its seat with the direction of pressure thereon.
22. A packless valve device comprising, in combination, a casing having a passageway and a seat, a valve external of said passageway adapted to engage said seat, means operable in said passageway for moving the valve in a rectilinear plane laterally relatively to the axis of its seat, and yieldingly resistant connecting means between the valve and said means permitting relative inclependent adjustment of the valve to its seat.
23. A paclrless valve device comprising, in combination, a casing having an inlet torming a valve seat, an external valve adapted to engage said seat, means for operating the valve in a rectilinear lateral path relative its seat, and means forming a connection between the valve and said operating means lit) for yieldingly forcing the valve upon its seat in the direction of flow through the casing.
24. In a valve device, in combination, a casing having an inlet forming a valve seat, an externally arranged disc valve for engagement with said inlet, means on the casing for moving said valve into registration with the inlet to close the same, and a yieldingly resistant substantially universal joint between said means and the valve for permitting limited relative movement of the valve and means tending to maintain said valve on its Seat.
35. In a valve device, in combination, a casing having an inlet forming a valve seat,
an ei itornally arranged disc valve for en-v gagement with said inlet seat, means nonazrially arranged in said casing for moving said valve into registration with the inlet to close the same, and a yieldingly resistant connection. between said valve and moving means.
