FREDRICKS, OF LEEPEPW MISSCUB-I, AND @NE-THIEME TO JOHN 5 VS'I. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
Application led December To all whom t may @071.06m s. y
Y Be it known that l, ERNEST P. Pasaron, a citizenof the United States. a resident of Leeper, inthe county of `Wayne and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valves, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, forming'av part of this specification.
rlhis invention relates to improvements in valves, one of the objects vbeing topproduce ak simple valve device having operating means adaptedv to grind ,the valve on vits seat.
Another object is to produce aV simple, quick-closing valve adapted Vto quickly enoage its seatwhen the valve-operating mem:
ber is released. Y Y Y i p A furtherobgect 1s to vproduce a valve Y device of this kind having afsimple stuffing box which prevents leakage from Vthe valve housing. Y
ln. the preferred form of the invention, the valve is forced onto its seat by the pressure of thefluid tending to flow through the valve housing. rlhe-valve is opened means of an operatingL handle which engages a Scam, but when the valve 'is closed the operating handle is separated from the cam andy said handle can then be oscillated to grind the valve on itsV seat.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention comprises the novel construction, combination and arrangement of f parts hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention. However, it is to be understood that the invention comprehends changes, variations and modifications which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended. Y
Fig. I is a vertical section, partly in elevation, showing a valve device embodying the features of this invention.
Fig. II is a side elevation of the lower portion of the valve device.V
To illustrate one form of the invention, I have shown a substantially T-shaped valve housing 1 provided with an L-shaped fluid passageway 2 through which ,fiuid is conducted in the direction indicated by arrows. One end of this passageway is pros'rnrnnns, or
vanvn.
12, 1921. serial No. 521,691,
videdv with a beveled annular valve seat adaptedto engagethe beveled margin of afvalve 3. A pipe is screwed onto the upper end of housing 1 to'provide for the delivery of' fluid through the passageway 2.
A stuffing box 5 is formed in Vone end ofthe valve housing, said stuffing box being co-axial with the valve and valve seat. 6 designates an ordinary gland screwed into the stung box and engaging the packing therein. A valve stem 7 extends from the valve l3 and passes through thestuffing box 5, the lower end of said stem beingfoutside of the valve housing. `vrlhis stem is integrally connected to the valve 3,#or otherwise suitably fixed thereto, so that the valve can beuturned by imparting a rotarymotion to the stem. Y Y
A tubular cam member A`is`preferably screwed onto the lower end'ofA the Vvalve,V
iousing ,and provided with an angularcam slot B having an'rinclined cam Aface 8 in whicha notch or recess 9 is formed. The slot is also provided withrhorizontal top and bottom walls 10 and 11 extending from its inclined walls. The tubular cam member A surrounds the lower end of valve stem and it is closed at the bottom and provided vwith a non-circular wrench-receiving lower margin 12'. Y
13 designates a valve-opening handleV in the formof a rod passing" through the cam closed -by a quick manual operation of the handle, and this results in frequent valvegrinding operations when the valve-i is closed and opened.
Vhen the valve occupies its closed position, the handle 13 is separated from the inclined cam face 8, and it then lies between the horizontal walls 10 and 11 of the cam slot, but it does not contact with either of these walls. The fluid pressure then forces the valve into firm engagement with its seat, and the handle 13 can be oscillated between the Walls l0 and 11, so as to very eiectivelyV grind the valve and valve seat.
I claim: l.V A valve device comprising a valve housing provided with a valve seat and a stuiiing box, a valve for engaging said valve seat, a valve stem fixed to said valve and extending through said stuiling box, a valveopening cam comprising a cam slot having an inclined `cam face, and an operating member secured to said valve stem and extending throughsaid cam slot, said operating member being adapted Vto engage said cam face to open said valve, and said operating member being separated from said cani face and free to oscillate While the valve is held on said seat, so as to grind the valve on saidseat.
2. A valve deviceV comprising a valve housing having an angular passageway provided With an annular valve seat, a stuffing box `co-axial with said valve seat, a valve 'for engaging said seat, a valve stem fixed to said valve and extending through said stuffing box, a tubular member extending from said valve housing and surrobunding said vvalve stem, said tubular member having an angular cam slot comprising a horizontal portion and a portion provided With an inclined cam face, and a valve-opening handle extending through said cam slot and removably secured to said stem, said handle being separated from said cam face and free to oscillate iny said horizontal portion of the cam slot when the valve is closed, and said handle being adapted to engage 4 said inclined cam face to open the valve.
3. A quick-closing pressure-actuated valve device comprising a valve housing provided With an annular valve seat, a pressure-actuated valve adapted to be closed and held on said seat in response to fluid pressure, a valve stem fixed to said valve and extending through said housing, Va valve-opening member secured to said valve stem, a cam having an inclined cam face provided With a recess, said valve-opening member being separated :trom said cam face and free to oscillate when thevalve is closed, so as to grind the valve on said seat, said valve-opening member having a cam-engaging portion movable on said cam face to open the valve and adapted to enter said recess to retain the valve in its open position.
4. A quick-closing pressure-actuated valve device comprising a valve housing having an angular passageway provided With an annular valve seat at one of its ends, a stuiiing box co-axial with said valve seat, a pressure-actuated valve adapted to be closed and held on said seat in response to fluid pressure, ay valve stem fixed to said valve and extendingthrough said stuffing box, a tubular member screwed onto said valve housing and surrounding the outer end of said stem, said tubular member having an angular cam slot comprising a horizontal portion and a portion provided With an `inclined cam face and a notch in said face, and a valve-opening handle extending through said slot and removably fixed to said `valve stern, said handle being movable along said cam face to open the valve and a portion of said handle being adapted to enter said notch to retain the valve in its open position, said` handle being separated from said cam face and free to oscillate in said horizontal portion of the slot Whenfthe valve is held on said seat, so as to grind the valve on the seat.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I hereunto aiix my signature.
