COCK AND THE LIKE.

To aZLw-kom itmay concern;-
Belit knownthatI, RoBnR'rFRANoIs CON- LON, a subject of the 'King of Great Britain and Ireland, and. resident. voi .Manchester, England, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in'or Relating to Clocks and .thelike, of which the following is specification.
[This inventlon relates to cocksand the like of the metal to metal type, primarlly intendedforfthe control of-petrol and analogous liquids and'has for its object to provide an .efficient and. durable cockpit the kindreferred to in which the liability to leak is obviated. andin which there .is no tendency ofthe'rworking faces to gall or bindin use.
. 'As usually constructed cocks of the kind referred to consist of a gun metalbody with the inlet and outlet in oneand the same plane,'bored out to suit a gun metal tapered powder. The tapered plug isvretained in positionby a spring held in tensionby the projection ofthe smaller end. ofthe tapered plug ,throughthe body. With the tapered plug i n;the;oon?? position, .a hole is drilled at J angles to the aforesaid tapered plug connectingitheinlet and'outlet of the body.
[ltis found, however, that the eificiency-decreases with wear .in' this .typeiof cock and owing to the frequent presence of impurities "in fluids, .the' operating faces become scoredfand also because of the peculiar properties of petrol and analogous liquids,
, the movement o'f theoperating faces is extrem li' ars Accord gjto the present invention' tapered plug'fis lined or covered with a suitable anti friction. white metal or tin during the course of construction and instead; of

The invention will bemore particularly described by the aid'of the accompanying drawings, wherein: Y r

The cap 2' is locked in position by the grub screw m which projects sufiicientlyfar to constitute a stop for the handle at.
It is essential that the metal or alloy employed for the aforesaid lining or covering should be of a durable nature and not subject to undue wear, while at the same time being sufficiently ductile to allow hard impurities in the fluid to bed into the lining gr covering, rather than score the harder ace.
Although an anti-friction white metal has been found most suitable for the aforesaid lining or covering by reason of its freedom from wear, galling or binding,--while readily conforming or bedding in to the surface orsurfaces of the opposing face or faces and at the same time possessing a low coefficient of friction which is of advantage in the actuation of the operating faces any other material possessing these qualities may be used in place of the aforesaid alloy.
fWhen it is desired to use the cock for two or more fluids, or for fluids from different sources of supply, inlet and outlet ports are provided accordingly. In Figs. 5 to 10 an arrangement is shown in which the invention is adapted to control the supply of petrol from two tanks and also the supply of pressure medium to said tanks. In this casethe plug a and easing are formed and assembled as before described but the casing is provided with a bracket or fitting constituting a screwed stopper n "for a petrol tank. Theplug is provided with two threeway ports 0 and p to control petrol and air respectively; The ports 0 are adapted to register with the inlet'ports' 1" ands in the casing which communicate with the main tank 6 and"auxiliary tank a respectively (see Fig. 9) through the pipes, 22, u, the outlet Z communicating, via the pipe Z with the engine carbureters as shown. The ports p are adapted to place the outlet ports a and w, leading to the main and auxiliary tanks t and arespectively, the air inlet 'port '22. w
In this case the handle (Z is carried toany in communication with convenient position, say the dash-board by means of the spindle connected to the plug spindle by means of the universal joint 2 said handle having a finger d thereon adapted to move over an indicator d whereon the position of the plug ports relative to the casing ports are indicated.
The action of the device will be obvious from the drawings and the respective ports are so arranged 'thatas the petrol outlet ports are in operation for one tank the pressure'medium inlet ports] for the same tank. is operative.
" It isofcourse obvious th'atfthe' invention can be embodied in greatly modified forms 'control'of petrol and analogous liquids comprisinga casing and a valve proper, antifriction white metal linlng between the oontacting parts which While of a durable nature and not subject to any undue wear is sufliciently ductile as to allow hard impurities in the fluid to bed into. the lining or covering rather than score, the harder face, substantially as described.
2. Valves, cocks andthe like for the control of petroland analogous liquids comprising a body part, a relatively"rotatablelplug formed with a tapered" conical seatingof anti-friction white metal, inlet and, oulet ports in the casing and corresponding passages in the plug, a spring interposed between the Ilarge endfof the plug and an abutment secured'to the casing together with means to rotate the plug, substantially as described. i 3. Valves, cocks and the like. for the control of petrol and analogous liquids comprising a body part, a relatively rotatable plug formed with a tapered conical seating of anti-friction white metal located in said casing, three-way inletand outlet portsin the casing and corresponding passages in the plug, a cap secured to the casing through which the valve spindle projects and a compression spring located between the tapered plug and the cap adapted to force the plug on to its seat, substantially as described 41 Valves,'cocks and the like for the con trol of'petrol and' ianalogous liquids comprising a body part, a relativelyrotatable plug formed with a tapered conical seating of anti-friction white metal lOCW Gd insaid casing two .or more setsof ports in the casing and plug for controllingltwoor more fluids, a cap securedto the casing through which the valve spindle projects and acorn.-
prcssion spring located between the tapered plug and the ccp adapted to force theplug prising a casing, a relatively rotatable plug formed with a tapered conical seating of anti-friction White metal located in said casing, two or more sets of three-Way ports in the casing and plug, a cap secured to the casing through which the plug spindle projects and a compression spring located between the cap and the tapered plug, means to rotate the plug together with means to indicate the angular position of said plug 10 relatively to the casing, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set Gopies 0! this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. 0."
